Soils of the agricultural land derived mostly from volcanic ash in Jeju island may be characterized by relatively high PH, high contents of organic matter and exchangeable bases, and significantly low content of available phosphorus. The PH, organic matter, and available phosphorus of the soils in northern Jeju are 6.1, 12.6%, and 23 ppm, while those of the soils in the southern Jeju are 6.4, 3.7 %, and 76 ppm respectively. Upland soils in Jeju may be classified into 4 groups on the basis of soil fertility: black soil, very dark brown soil, dark brown, and red yellow soil. The organic matter content of black soil, very dark soil and dark brown soil is 15%, 7%, and 3% respectively. The soils of high organic matter content show the high phosphorus absorption coefficient, low content of available phosphorus, and low degree of the base saturation. The soil productivity for barley in the northern Jeju is higher than that in the southern Jeju and the productivity in the western Jeju is higher than that in the eastern part. The productivity for barley is in decreasing order of dark brown soil, very dark brown soil and black soil. Yields of potato and sweet potato in Jeju are higher than in the mainland. Those crops are considered to be tolerant to aluminumtoxicity. The response of sweet potato to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in Jeju soils is lower than that in the mainland, while the response of barley and rape to nitrogen and phosphorus is higher than that in the mainland. The response to fertilizer applied is greater in the northern Jeju than in the southern Jeju. Lime requirement for the Jeju soils calculated on the basis of laboratory tests is so tremendous that single application of lime required might induce adverse effect. Most of the phosphorus applied to the Jeju soils is readily fixed as unavailable form and application of phosphorus in the level of 30 to 40 kg/10a is thought to give little effect.
This experiment was conducted to select genotypes that were high-yielding and adapted to the soil and weather conditions in Korea, from 13 Fawn deri ved progenies which represented in the previous study. Comparisons were made in various leaf and plant characteristics, and forage productivities, between the 13 polycross progenies of high-yielding Fawn and control varieties including Fawn, Alta, and Kentucky 31. The results obtained were summarized as follow; Genetic differences between the polycross progeny group and the control group were recognized in leaf fresh weight but those between two groups in leaf dry weight were not observed. Leaf area of all derived progenies and control varieties were appeared to have individual genetic differences and, moreover, the leaf area of the polycross progeny group was larger than that of the control. Differences between polycross progeny group and control group in leaf width were not significant. However, leaf length exhibited significant differences among all polycross progenies, and control varieties between two groups, and among polycross progenies but no differences were observed among control varieties. Tiller number, plant height, and plant width of the polycross progeny group were larger than those of the control varieties when measured before and after harvest. Panicle length among all polycross progenies and control varieties showed minor differences. However, significant differences were found between the polycross progeny group and control group, as well as among the polycross progenies and control varieties within each group in culm length. Above characteritics in the leaf fresh and dry weight, area and length, plant width and height, and tiller number showed positive correlations with the forage yields, respectively. Forage yields of the polycross progenies were higher than those of the control varieties and the variation of the yields among the genotypes were great.
Growth and biomass production of natural stands of Quercus variabilis in relation to tree density were studied to obtain basic guide lines for future tending operation. Two natural stands of Quercus variabilis located at 900m (A stand: 6,600trees/ha, $15.84m^2/ha$, $\frac{19}{17-20}$) and 800m (B stand: 4,300trees/ha, $16.65m^2/ha$, $\frac{20}{17-21}$) elevation in Sancheong, Kyongnam Province were selected for the comparative study and following results were obtained through a sample plot method. After diameter of individual trees in the sample plots was measured, twelve average trees from each diameter class were cut felled to measure dry weight of $W_S$, $W_B$, $W_L$, $W_{Ba}$, and standing biomass and biomass production rates by a allometrior regressions related to $D^2H$. Vertical distribution of leaves along the stems indicated that photosynthesis was carried out 2.2m above the ground in Stand A and 1.2m in Stand B. Maximum photosynthesis was located 4.2m and 6.2m above the ground in Stand A and B, respectively. Leaf area index was 4.25ha/ha for Stand A, and 3.89ha/ha for Stand B. Above-ground standing biomass was 49.51 ton/ha for Stand A and 59.20 ton/ha and net annual production was 6.75 ton/ha/yr. for Stand A and 8.99 ton/ha/yr. for Stand B. The ratio of net annual production to standing biomass was 17.5% for Stand A and 16.7% for Stand B. Net assimilation rate was 2.75kg/kg/yr. for Stand A and 3.58kg/kg/yr. for Stand B. Stem wood production rate was 1.46kg/kg/yr. for Stand A and 2.09kg/kg/yr. for Stand B. Bark production rate was 0.60 kg/kg/yr. for Stand A and 0.34kg/kg/yr. for Stand B. Above data indicated that Stand B utilized growing spaces and sites more efficiently than Stand A. It is concluded chat productivity of natural stands of Quercus variabilis can be enhanced through optimization of basal areas and number of tree per hectare and that sound management of natural oak stands should be based on systematic sampling of the area for periodic productivity estimation.
In this study, enzymatic saccharification of substrates from Alnus hirsuta Ruper (8-14 years). Quercus acutissima Carruthers, Betula platyphylla var. japonica Nera, Populus euramericana Guiner and Platanus orientalis L. were investigated using crude cellulase preparations of Trichoderma viride Pers. ex. Fr. SANK 16374, and conduced on the optimum treated conditions of the cellulase sacchrification and reactivation of residue of digested substrates. The Trichoderma viride cellulase was produced by the submerged culture process and produced in the culture fluid was salted out quantitatively by the use of ammonium sulfate. The method of dilignification from wood (5 species) was treated by the peracetic acid(PA) method. The reducing sugar was determined by the dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method. 1. The results of tests carried out for 96 hr. (Figure 1), show conclusively the initial substrates from 5 species ($S_3$) which has been rendered highly reactive form and the mean rate of reducing sugar was 28.3 %. 2. The results of tests carried out for 96 hr., the reactivation of residue of digested substrates (improvement in the quality of the substrate through preheating in air at $190^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. followed by milling was (60 mesh size) at the same substrate level, increased concentrations of cellulase at the same substrate level, and increased concentrations of cellulase increases the rate of hydrolysis considerably. 3. Figure 1. shows conclusively that the residue of digested substrates ($S_1$ dried at $60^{\circ}C$) which has been rendered extremly resistant to cellulase action can be reactivated into a highly reactive form ($S_2$), almost comparable to that of the initial substrates ($S_3$). And the reducing sugar formation did not show statistically significent differences at 5% levels by initial substrates and the residue of digested substrates (preheating in air at $190^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. fallowed by milling was (60 mesh size).
A series of experiments were carried out in the laboratory and fields to reevaluate the effects of Padan (cartap) to the brown planthopper (BPH). Nilapanata lugens. The $LD_{50}\;land\;LC_{50}$ values for the female and male BPH were determined by the topical application and seedling- dipping/root -soaking methods. The values were differed with the sex and test methods, and the BPH mortality was greatly increased with a rise in temperatures $(25-35^{\circ}C)$. In a viewpoint of honeydew excretion and offsprings produced, there was no any possibility in BPH resurgence at the sublethal exposures of Padan. The BPH mortality to Padan 4 G was greatly low in the pot tests compared with those to diazinon and carbofuran, but in the paddy fields the efficacy of Padan 4G was nearly reversed. A single application of Padan 4G at the rate of 4kg/10a dramatically suppressed the BPH populations in the paddy fields, and the control effect was much more accelerated in the drained paddy field than in the submerged paddy field.
These studies were carried out to identify anatomical characteristics of ray parenchyma of xylem tissue of trunk in 6 species of Populus and 5 species of Salix which were grown in Korea. The results of these experiments were summarized as follows: In the type of ray parenchyma, Populus had uniseriate homogeneous ray tissue and Sahx had uniseriate heterogeneous ray tissue. Upright ray cells among uniseriate heterogeneous ray tissue in Salix were subdivided into rectangular type and square type. The minimum and maximum length of procumbent ray cells of Populus ranged $26.84-212.28{\mu}$ and those of Salix were $46.36-170.80{\mu}$. However rectangular type of upright ray cell n Salix were $26.84-70.76{\mu}$ and square type were $17.08-43.92{\mu}$. The minimum and maximum width of procumbent ray cells of Populus ranged $12.20-24.40{\mu}$ but those of Salix were $12.20-26.84{\mu}$. However, rectangular type of upright ray cell in Salix were $9.76-41.48{\mu}$ and square type were $19.52-46.36{\mu}$. The height of ray parenchyma of Populus in tangential section ranged $65.88-414.80{\mu}$ but Salix were $65.88-439.20{\mu}$. Ray parenchyma width of Populus ranged $4.88-24.40{\mu}$ but those of Salix were $7.32-21.96{\mu}$. The number of ray parenchyma cells of Populus in tangential section were 3-26 cell, but Salix were 2-21 cells.
The study describes on the identification and morphological characteristics of each species, ecological characteristics and propagation techniques, and developing utilization measures of the Parthenocissus plants for environment conservation and revegetation of the babe rock-slopes. The following species and varieties are disscussed in this study; Parthenocissus tricuspidata (S. et Z.) Planch. var. veitchii Rehd. var. lowii Rehd. var. pupurea Hort. Parthenocissus quiquefolia (L.) Planch. var. engelmanni Rehd. var. saint-pauli Rehd. var. hirsuta Planch. Parthenocissus henryana Diels et Gilg. Parthenocissus thomsoni Planch. Parthenocissus heptaphylla Small. Parthenocissus inserta (Kern.) K. Fritsch. Parthenocissus laetevirens Rehd. Parthenocissus himalayana Planch. These are, in general, all vigorous self-clinging climbers that will quickly cover a wall and bare rock surfaces with a dense network of branch growths and beautiful green leaves which change to shades of scarlet and crimson before they fall in Autumn. Parthenocissus tricuspidata out of 8 species in the genus Parthenocissus is the most useful plant for the environment conservation including the bare rock-slope revegetation and for the production of food and shelter for wildlifes. This native of Korea clings by means of small rootlike holdfasts (adhesive discs) and holds (tendrils) to stone work or any other solid support, tenaciously.
A laboratory study was made of liming on the extractability of phosphate added to the uncultivated acid soils differing in clay content. The experiments were conducted with different rates of calcium carbonate and triple superphosphate at field capacity and 50% field capacity. The concentration of extractable phosphate was greatly reduced by simultaneous addition of calcium carbonate in the loam soil. When samples of the loam soil were preincubated for ranging from 0 to 50 days in the presence of calcium carbonate prior to phosphate application, the extractable phosphate concentration increased with preincubation time, and more phosphate was extracted from the soil maintained at 50% field capacity during the incubation. However, the extractable phosphate concentration in the sandyloam soil did not change with preincubation time and was not affected by moisture status. It may be concluded that the extractability of added phosphate was influenced by not only liming time but physical properties of soil.
In this study, enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrate of the waste wood of Cortinellus edodes was investigated using crude cellulase preparation of Trichoderma viride Pers. ex. Fr. SANK 16374. The crude cellulase was produced by the submerged culture process and produced in the culture fluid was salted out quantitatively by the use of ammonium sulfate. Reducing sugar was determined by the dinitrosalisylic acid (DNS) method. 1. The chemical composition of the waste wood was crude protein 2.26%, c. fat 2.57%, c. fibre 44.60%, c. ash 5.58% and lignin 13.62%. In amino acid composition, no cystine and methionine was showed, but trace amount of Vitamin A, $B_1$, and $B_2$, niacine and chloride were detected. (Table 1) 2. As heat treatment of the substrate was found to produce the highest reducing sugar yield being reacted for 48hr. with T.v cellulase, the substrate was heated to $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. either before or immediately after milling. 3. The substrate heated and ball milled at $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. the reducing sugar yield reached to 11.5%. 4. The substrate without any treatment was found to produce the highest reducing sugar yield being reacted 72hr. with T. v cellulase, the reducing sugar yield reached to 10.1%. 5. The rate of reducing sugar per each treated substrate was decreased by the order of the substrated, heated and then ball milled at $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. (11.5%)> without any treatment (10.1)> ball milled and heated at $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. (6.9%). 6. Saccharification of waste wood has been shown to be possible by heat treated and milling the substrate in contact with cellulase. And it is likely to be recommended that the waste wood may be valuable for raw materials of saccharification.
Leaf damage rate and actual damaged leaf area by the apple leaf miner (ALM), Phyllonorycter ringoniella(Matsumura), and its parasitism were investigated in 1982 and 1983 in apple orchards. Percent leaf damage was higher in the occasionally sprayed orchards than in the periodically sprayed orchards from May to August, but the trend was reversed after September. Seasonal changes of the leaf damage seemed to be different with the varieties of apple trees. A few species of Eulophidae and Holcothorax testaceipes R. of Encyrtidae were the predominant parasites of the ALM. Overall percent parasitism was highest in the 5th (overwintering) generation, and conspicuously decreased in the 3rd-4th generation (July-August) when insecticides were sprayed periodically. Actual damaged leaf area per mine of the ALM was apparently different with the generations; $0.67cm^2$ for the 1st, $0.8{\sim}0.9cm^2$ for the 2nd-4th on the first growth shoot, and $1.49cm^2$ for the overwintered generation on the second growth shoot. When ALM leaf damage rate was about $53{\sim}73%$, the decrease in the photosynthetic area to the damaged leaf was about $6{\sim}8%$.
