Usefulness of the Waist Circumference-to-Height Ratio in Screening for Obesity in Korean Children and Adolescents (한국 소아청소년 비만에서 허리둘레-신장비의 유용성)

  • Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of the waist circumference-to-height ratio (WHTR) in screening for obesity in Korean children and adolescents. Methods: Data, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and height, were obtained from the national growth surveys for children and adolescents in 2005. The WHTR was calculated dividing WC by height in subjects 2~18 years of age. Overweight and obese were defined by BMI percentiles for age and gender. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to find out the optimal cutoff values of WHTR that matched BMI-determined overweight and obesity using the STATA program. The area under the curve (AUC), a measure of diagnostic power, of WHTR was compared to WC. The influence of age on WHTR was analyzed by the SAS program. Results: The WHTR significantly decreased with age, and had less correlation with age in the 6~18-year-old age group than the 2~5-year-old age group. Furthermore, the WHTR also had less correlation with age than WC in the 6~18-year-old age group. The AUC of WHTR in identifying overweight and obesity was significantly higher than the AUC of WC in the 6~18-year-old age group. The optimal cutoff values were 0.51 in boys and 0.49 in girls for obesity, and 0.48 in boys and 0.47 in girls for overweight, with all having the AUC>0.9. The optimal cutoff values of WHTR had a higher sensitivity for diagnosing obesity than WC${\geq}$90th percentiles. Conclusion: The WHTR is an easy, accurate, and less age-dependent index with high applicability in screening for obesity in children and adolescents.

Sense of Coherence and Coping Resources of Working Nurses at Hospital (병원근무 간호사의 통합성과 대처자원)

  • This study was designed to identify the relationship between the level of sense of coherence(SOC) and coping resources of nurses working in hospital. The subjects of this study were 248 nurses working at C University hospital in Seoul. The data was collected during the period from July 1. to July 14. 2001. The insruments for this study were SOC scale by Antonovsky(1987) and Coping Resources Inventory by author. The analysis of data was done by simple statistics, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient with SAS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Total mean SOC was 132.1/203.0 with a range 96.0 to 171.0. The mean score of this item was arranged according to three areas. The meaningfulness was 4.9, managability was 4.7, and comprehensibility was 4.2. 2. Total mean coping resources was 144.5/225.0 with a range 93.0 to 190.0. The highest mean score of item according to the area was social support 4.0 and the lowest mean score was self care coping 2.7. 3. A significant statistical difference between age, religion, spending money and SOC was found. 4. Significant statistical difference between age, educational level, spending money, working period and coping resources were found. 5. Coping resources by the level of SOC was high in the highest group of SOC(F=6.19, p=0.00). With respect to the area of coping resources, higher group of SOC was using much coping resources generally except area of leisure. 6. SOC was positively related to age(r=0.17), working periods(r=0.16), each SOC area, coping resources and all area of them except leisure. 7. The coping resources were positively related to age(r=0.21), working periods(r=0.21), SOC (r=0.49), each coping resources area, and each SOC area. In conclusion, we confirmed that the level of SOC of the subjects was low relatively and the high level of sense of coherence was related to the high score of coping resources. Therefore, it could also contribute to select suitable nurses in their fields. In the future, it's necessary to develop strategies improving SOC.

Age and Growth of Purple whelk, Rapana venosa (Gastropoda: Muricidae) in the West Sea of Korea (한국 서해산 피뿔고둥, Rapana venosa (Valenciennes, 1846) 의 연령과 성장)

  • Based on 1,260 samples, the age and growth of purple whelk, Rapana venosa (Valenciennes) (Gastropoda:Muricidae) have been investigated. The samples were collected monthly during one year time (from February, 2004 to January, 2005) from the West Sea of Korea. The age of R. venosa was determined by the ring of the operculum analysis. The relationship between whelk's shell height and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as an equation of linear regression and later a correspondence in each ring formation was determined. Based on the monthly variations in the marginal index (MI) of the operculum, it was assumed that the ring of this species has been formed once a year during the period from July to August. The relationship between shell height and shell width was expressed by the equation SW = 0.7867 SH - 6.3988 ($R^2$=0.8604); and between shell height and total weight by the equation $TW=0.0000626{\times}SH^{3.206}$ ($R^2$=0.8324). The purple whelk's spawning period was estimated through the fatness analysis and has occurred during the period from May to July. Obtained results suggests that the ring formation occurs once a year (in July) and the length of time period since the first ring has been formed on the operculum is approximately 13 months (1.08 year). The purple whelk's growth curves for shell height and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's equation and were expressed as follows: $SH_t=199.653(1-e^{-0.104(t+2.478)}$ $TW_t=1484.105(1-e^{0.104(t+2.478)})^{3.206}$.

Elementary School Children′s Lifestyle (학령기 아동의 생활양식)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on elementary school children's lifestyle and to contribute to developing on the health education program in elementary schools. The subjects were 1,412 children in 4 elementary schools in Gangwon-Do and Chonrabuk-Do area. Data collection was done from September to November 2001 by questionnaire and school health documents. The questionnaire corrected for the purpose of this study which had been developed by Bronson School of Nursing(1991), 'Lifestyle Questionnaire for School-age Children'. The questionnaire consists of 3 categories; 'Activities that promote health', 'Injury prevention', 'Feeling'. Cronbach coefficient alpha for the 29 items was .68. The data analyzed to obtain frequency, mean, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient by SPSS Win program. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Females(50.2%) of gender, 6th grade(24.2%) of grade, nuclear family(82.0%) of family type, beyond college graduate(54.5%) of father's school career, under high school graduate(58.1%) of mother's school career, first of birth order(47.1%) were majority. Mean of father's age was 41.2 and mother's age was 38.1. 2. The mean of lifestyle was 66.4, feeling was 73.3, activities that promote health was 60.3 and injury prevention was 64.0. The highest degree of activities that promote health was 「I eat fruits」and injury prevention was 「I look both ways when crossing streets」and feeling was 「I enjoy my family」. The lowest degree of activities that promote health was 「I visit the dentist every tear」 and injury prevention was 「I wear a helmet when I go on bike trips」 and feeling was 「I think it is okay to cry」. 3. There were significant differences in lifestyle of gender(t=4.309, p=.000), grade(F=6.299, p=.000), father's age(t=2.534, p=.011), father's education(t=-4.933, p=.000), mother's education(t=-3.360, p=.001), birth order (t=5.363, p=.000). There were significant differences in activities that promote health of gender(t=-2.462, P=.014), grade(F=4.893, p=.000), father's education(t=-4.480, p=.000), birth order(t=4.343, p=.000), in injury prevention of gender(t=-4.452, p=.000), grade(F=8.636, p=.000), father's age(t=3.386, p=.001), mother's age(t=2.059, p=.040), father's education(t=-6.051, p=.000), mother's education(t=-5.173, p=.000), birth order(t=4.417, p=.000) and in feeling of gender (t=-3.285, p=.001), grade(F=7.526, p=.000), mother's age(t=-3.268, p=.001). 4. Activities that promote health was positively correlated with injury prevention(r=.432, p=.000), feeling(r=.210, p=.000), lifestyle (r=.785, p=.000). Injury prevention was positively correlated with feeling(r=.256, p=.000), lifestyle(r=.854, p=.000) also feeling was positively correlated with lifestyle(r=.504, p=.000). These findings suggest the need to develop nursing strategy to promote elementary school children's health. Because helmet use score in injury prevention marked the lowest score, it is necessary to encourage helmet use when planning injury prevention and health promotion.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of nursing organizational commitment and job satisfaction on intention of resignation of clinical nurses. The subjects of this study were clinical nurses who were working at general hospitals in Pusan and Taegu in Korea. The questionnaires were sent to 850 clinical nurses at 8 general hospitals and 790(92%) answers were replied. Data were collected from Oct. 4 to Oct. 30. The instruments of this study were scales for the measurement of nursing orgainzational commitment, job satisfaction and intention of resignation of clinical nurses. The Cronbach ${\alpha}s$ of the scales were .9385, .9232, .6847. After screening of data, 769 cases were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 10.0 program. The results of the study were as followings: 1. Average score of the nursing organizational commitment, job satisfaction and intention of resignation of the subjects were 48.50, 50.23 and 12.20. 2. There were significant differences in nursing organizational commitment, job satisfaction and intention of resignation by age, marital status, religions, education level, position, career, and work place. 3.   • The Purpose of this study is to provide the basic data necessary for the high level of nursing service and the efficiency plan of nurse's man power by analyzing job satisfaction level of public health services. The study population included all public health services(118) in health care center within Jeon Buk province. A Survey was conducted to collect data by a self-administered questionnaire from September I to December B, 1990. A Forty item questionnaire was designed to elicit data concerning how nurses feel about the factors of job satisfaction. All the data were analyzed by means of percentage, mean, anova, T-test, Pearsen's correlation coefficient. The Results of this study were summerized as follows. 1. General characteristics of PHN : age: $33.9\%\;20\~29$ years old education level: $52.6\%$ professional nursing college marital status: $75.5\%$ married religion: $50.5\%$ protestant clinical experience: $40.7\%$ no clinical experience public health nursing career: $47.9\%$ low 5years 2. Influencing factor of Job satisfaction desired duration of employment: $65\%$ needed duration, $18.3\%$ lifetime duration motives of employment: $40.8\%$ no special motive of employment desired organ of leave: $19.3\%$ public health clinic 3. Level of job satisfaction with job satisfaction components. The level of job satisfaction showed an average score 3.39 out of 5.0. Level of job satisfaction with general characteristics. General characteristics(age, educational level, manital status, clinical experience, public health nursing carrier, duties, lincense and qualification) and job satisfaction was no relationship. 5. Level of job satisfaction with Influencing factor. Duration of desired employment (p<0.01) and motives of employment(p<0.001) was presented. 6. The Depression in Middle-aged Women in Kwangwondo (일부지역 중년여성의 우울 정도와 영향 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the depression in middle-aged women. The subjects for this study were 246 middle-aged women in Kangwondo, the northeastern part of Korea. Data were collected from February 22 to April 24, 1999 by a structured questionnaire. The instruments for this study were CES-D (Radloff, 1977), somatic discomfort scale (Wittenborn, 1979), self-esteem scale (Rosenburg, 1971) and life satisfaction Index-Z (Wood et al. 1969). The data were analyzed by SAS/PC+ program using ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of the study were as follows : 1. Of 246 middle-aged women, 91 women (37%) revealed depression. The percentage of mild, moderate, severe depression were 17.78%, 11.28%, 7.72% respectively. 2. The statistically significant difference in the score of the depression according to the age (F=3.46, p=.0001)was obtained. 3. There were significant differences between depression and somatic discomfort (F=15.71, p=.0001). 4. The significant differences between depression and life satisfaction (F=23.89, p=.0001) was obtained. 5. The data shows the positive correlations between depression and somatic discomfort (r=.4856, p=.0001), between self-esteem and life-satisfaction(r=.2727, p=.0001), but we found negative correlations between depression and self-esteem(r=-4200, p=.0001), between depression and life-satisfaction(r=-.4409, p=.0001), between somatic discomfort and self-esteem(r=-.2275, p=.0015), between somatic discomfort and life-satisfaction(r=-.2695, p=.0002).

  • In order to evaluate the correlation of age with development stage on permanent lower posterior teeth. the author exmined the roentgeregrams in standard films taken by intraoral technic and analysed the development phases of 1358 teeth of 500 males ranging from 9 to 15 years. The development was divided into 7 phases : Crown complete (Cr. C.). Root length 1/4(R. 1/4) Root length /2 (R. 1/2) Apical closure complete (A.C) The obtained results were as follows : 1. The formation of roots in full length on posterior teeth was complete as follow : a. Roots of 1st premolar : 12.72 years b. Roots of 2nd premolar : 12.94 years c. Meral Roots of 2nd molar : 13.38 years d. Distal Roots of 2nd molar : 13.46 years 2. The formation of apical forman of premolar was closured as follows : a. Apical foramen of root of 1st premolar : 13.64 years b. Apical foramen of root of 2nd premolar : 13.93 years 3. As a general rule. the mesial roots of second molar were developed earlier than distal roots of second molar. 4. In the correlation of age with the development stage, the regression equations. the correlation coefficents. and the sample numbers were “Y = 0.8370x + 10.2160, r = 0.71(p<0.01), n = 318”on lower first premolar, “Y = 0.6984x + 10.2148, r = 0.71(p<0.01), n = 385”on lower second premolar, “Y = 0.8810x + 10.2040, r = 0.65(p<0.01), n = 344”on mesial Root of lower second molar, and “Y = 0.7310x + 10.7940, r = 0.66(p<0.01), n = 311”on Distal Root of lower second molar respectively.

The Effects of Nurses' Turnover Intention, Nunchi, and Job Stress on Organizational Socialization (간호사의 이직의도, 눈치, 직무스트레스가 조직사회화에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of nurses' turnover intention, Nunchi, and job stress on organizational socialization. Data were collected from 180 nurses working in hospitals in G-do. Analysis was done using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Multiple regression with IBM SPSS WIN/21.0. Organizational socialization was inversely correlated to turnover intention (r=-.52, p<.001), job stress (r=-.31, p<.001), and was positively correlated to Nunchi (r=.33, p<.001). The most influential factor on the subjects' organizational socialization was turnover intention (β=-.37, p<.001), Nunchi (β=.26, p<.001), job stress (β=-.24, p<.001), deployment to the desired department (β =.19, p=.001), Age 30 years or younger (β=-.14, p=.012), and Working department-OR (β=.11, p=.050). The explanatory power was 47.0% (F=25.59, p<.001). Therefore, a organizational socialization enhancement program is needed to reduce turnover intention and job stress. Also, age and desired depertment need to be taken into account when assigning departments.

Effects of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) on Depression and Quality of Life among Community-dwelling Korean Elderly Persons (노인의 구강건강 영향지수가 우울과 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between oral health impact profile, depression and quality of life among community-dwelling elderly persons in South Korea. Methods: The design of this research was cross-sectional descriptive study. The participants were 266 community-dwelling individuals aged 65 and older. Data were collected from November 20 to December 20, 2011. The measurements for assessing the subjects' oral health, depression, quality of life were OHIP-14, GDS-SF and QOL. Data were collected using self-administered or interviewer-administered questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The participants' mean age was 77.68, and 86.5% were female, 42.9% were living-alone elders. Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis found that oral health impact profile was significantly associated with depression (r=-.622, p<.001), QOL (r=-.400, p<.001), number of disease (r=.298, p<.001), age (r=.198, p=.002), education (r=-.149, p=.015), eating habit (r=.185, p=.003). The QOL was explained 54.7% by depression (${\beta}$=-.619), oral health impact profile (${\beta}$=-.127), number of benefited welfare service (${\beta}$=.235), perceived health (${\beta}$=-.327), eating habit (${\beta}$=-.094) using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Conclusion: These results indicate that the intervention program of oral health promotion for community-dwelling elders is needed from now on.
