  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joint regions using hybrid retrofitting with AFRP sheets and embedded CFRP reinforcements in existing reinforced concrete building. Therefore it was constructed and tested three specimens retrofitting the beam-column joint regions using such retrofitting materials. Specimens, designed by retrofitting the beam-column joint regions of existing reinforced concrete structure, were showed the stable failure mode and increase of load-carrying capacity due to the effect of crack control at the times of initial loading and confinement of retrofitting materials during testing. Specimens RBCJ-SRA3 designed by the retrofitting of AFRP sheets and embedded CFRP reinforcements in reinforced exterior beam-column joint regions were increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 1.86 times and its energy dissipation capacity by 1.65 times in comparison with standard specimen RBCJ for a displacement ductility of 5.

  • Aluminum 5052/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al5052/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The Al5052/AFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude during the service. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al5052/AFRP laminate was investigated in this study. Al5052/AFRP laminate composite consists of three thin sheets of Al5052 and two layers of unidirectional aramid fibers. The cyclic bending moment fatigue tests were performed with five different levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between Al5052 sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan. The relationships between da/dN and ΔK, between the cyclic bending moment and the delamination zone size, and between the fiber bridging mechanism and the delamination zone were studied. Fiber failures were not observed in the delamination zone in this study. It represents that the fiber bridging modification factor should turn out to increase and that the fatigue crack growth rate should decrease. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip.

  • A15052/AFRP laminates were developed principally to obtain a material with good fatigue strength, in which possible cracks would grow very slowly. Weight savings of more than 30% should be attainable in practice. Also, the crack bridging fibers could still was carry a significant part of the load over the crack, thus the COD and stress intensity factor was reduced at the crack tip. A15052/ AFRP laminates consists of three thin sheets of 5052-H34 aluminum alloy and two layers of [0] unidirectional aramid fiber prepreg. The cyclic-bending moment test was investigated based on applying the five kinds of bending moments. The size of the delamination zone produced between 5052-H34 aluminum alloy sheets and fiber-adhesive layers was measured from ultrasonic C-scan pictures taken around the fatigue crack. In addition, the relationship between the cyclic-bending moment and the delamination zone size was studied and the effect of fiber bridging mechanism was also considered.

  • Due to its outstanding feature, FRP is used widely for the material of strengthening in USA and Japan recently, and there have been active researches in korea as well. This study evaluates the behavior and ductility of each structure experiment using EBR and NSMR strengthening method with different AFRP types and strengthening area. There was the biggest increase in the load when the strengthening area is expanded showing a brittle aspect, and eventually the immature failure occurred. With regard to the methods, it is found that the NSMR method is more effective to strengthen the structure, and the uneven surface causes ductile failure.

  • Recently, the need for strengthening reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structure is increasing, particularly when there is an increase in load requirements, a change in use, a degradation problem, or some design/construction defects. Therefore, use of composite materials for structural repair presents several advantages and has been investigated all over the world. In this paper, the reinforced concrete slabs with epoxy - bonded AFRP sheed were experimentally investigated. Experimental data on strength. stiffness, material strain, deflection and mode of failure of strengthened slabs were obtained, and comparisons between the different flexural reinforcing schemes and reinforced concrete slabs without AFRP sheets were made It can be concluded that flexural strength of RC slabs strengthened with AFRP has increased, and that ductility of strengthened slabs has decreased.

  • Oxidized-PAN fiber reinforced composite(OFRP), carbon fiber reinforced composite(CFRP), aramid fiber reinforced composite(AFRP), and glass fiber reinforced composite(GFRP) were fabricated with phenolic resin matrix by hot press molding. We tested the friction coefficient and wear rate varying with fiber weight fraction and observed the effect of fibers according to characteristics of individual reinforcement. When the amount of aramid fiber was 45wt%, average friction coefficient was maximum value of 0.353~0.383, where as, when the amount of pitch based carbon fiber was 45wt%, average friction coefficient was the lowest value of 0.164~0.190. The wear rate of AFRP and CFRP was low, but that of GFRP and OFRP increases drastically in the case of increasing of fiber weight fraction. Wear diagram of OFRP was unstable, but that of CFRP and AFRP was a bit stable. Through very unstable diagram of GFRP, we found that friction stability of GFRP was the lowest.

  • This study investigated the failure mechanism of RC beams strengthened with AFRP sheets. Total 5 half-scale RC beams were constructed and tested to estimate the effectiveness of various methods to prevent the debonding failure of AFRP sheets. From the experimental results, it was found that increasing bonded length or end U-wrappings does not prevent debonding failure. On the other hand, the beams with center U-wrappings and shear-keys reached the ultimate state with their sufficient performance. The center U-wrappings tended to control debonding of the longitudinal AFRP sheets because the growth of the longitudinal cracks along the edges of the composites was delayed. In case of shear-keys, it was sufficient to eliminate debonding and the beams failed by AFRP sheets rupture due to the sufficient bond mechanism.

  • Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams with openings by using aramid fiber reinforcement polymers (AFRP) on the beams' surfaces offers a useful solution for upgrading concrete structures to carry heavy loads. This paper presents a repairing technique of the AFRP sheets that effectively strengthens RC beams, controls both the failure modes and the stress distribution around the beam chords and enhances the serviceability (deflection produced under working loads be sufficiently small and cracking be controlled) of pre-cracked RC beams with openings. To investigate the possible damage that was caused by the service load and to simulate the structure behavior in the site, a comprehensive experimental study was performed. Two unstrengthened control beams, four beams that were pre-cracked before the application of the AFRP sheets and one beam that was strengthened without pre-cracking were tested. Cracking was first induced, followed by repair using various orientations of AFRP sheets, and then the beams were tested to failure. This load was kept constant during the strengthening process. The results show that both the preexisting damage level and the FRP orientation have a significant effect on strengthening effectiveness and failure mode. All of the strengthened specimens exhibited higher capacities with capacity enhancements ranging from 21.8 to 66.4%, and the crack width reduced by 25.6-82.7% at failure load compared to the control beam. Finally, the authors present a comparison between the experimental results and the predictions using the ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines.
