Iridium oxide films (IROFs) have been extensively studied as a material for electrical stimulation of neurons, as iridium oxide has higher charge storage capacity than other metal films. More recently, sputtered iridium oxide film (SIROF) has been studied, because it can be made more conveniently than activated iridium oxide film (AIROF). Typically, the SIROFs are grown at temperatures from 400 to 600 $^{\circ}C$. However, such high temperatures cannot be used when the iridium oxide (IrOx) film is to be deposited on a flexible polymer material, such as polyimide. In this paper, we show that we can still obtain excellent characteristics in SIROFs grown without heating (cold SIROF), by optimizing the growth conditions. We show that the oxygen flow rate is a critical parameter for controlling the surface properties of a cold SIROF. At an oxygen flow rate of 12 seem, the cold SIROF exhibited a charge storage capacity (CSC) of 60 mC/cm$^2$, which is comparable to or better than other published values for iridium oxide films including heated SIROFs. The film produced under these conditions also had the minimum impedance value of all cold SIROFs deposited for this study. A stability test and biocompatibility test also demonstrated the superiority of the optimized cold SIROF.
The thermal reliability of the closed-type BLDC motor for the high speed axial fans is analyzed by a numerical method in this dissertation. Since the module and the motor part are combined in a closed case, the heat generated from a rotor in the motor and the electronic components in the PCB module can not be effectively removed to the outside. Therefore the module will easily fail by high temperature. The accelerated-life testing was accomplished to formulate the life equation and numerical method is used to predict the inside temperature of the PCB module, which is one of the life equation parameter according to the environment. The experiment for measuring the surface heat flux of the electronic components is carried out to apply the boundary condition of numerical study. When the environment temperature of BLDC motor is 21, 35 and $50^{\circ}C$, the temperature in the PCB space is predicted as 73.4, 87.5 and $102.4^{\circ}C$. Then the life time with the temperature are calculated as 2,239, 863 and 328.
To evaluation of clinical usefulness for B1+RMS limits, we compared image quality of Routine, Specific absorption rate (SAR) and Root mean square (RMS) protocol. 5 volunteers underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of the brain using three different protocols. We draw Region of interest ROI in cortex, white matter, gray matter, putamen and thalamus of axial plan. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) were evaluated in each area and Contrast to noise ration (CNR) were evaluated between white matter and gray matter. Qualitative evaluation was used to score each ROI. B1+RMS is confirmed its usefulness compared to conventional SAR standard on the aspect of improvement of image quality, reduction of scan time and easy adjusting parameter.

A chemical ranking and scoring system, CRS - Korea, has recently been developed and proposed to use to prioritize on a screening level the toxic chemicals for monitoring and risk assessment. As CRS-Korea requires rigorous assessments prior to its wide application, an assessment was conducted in this study by examining the contribution of individual parameter score to the final chemical score or ranking. The sensitivity of the system to the default values for various parameters of missing data was also tested. The chemical ranking/score was round to depend primarily on the score of a single parameter, i. e., the chemical release, while toxicity scores show little correlation with the priority Further analysis indicated that the dominating effect of the chemical release results from i) its multiplicative relationship with the other two exposure parameters (biodegradation and persistent) and ii) the fact that a maximum score of 10 was assigned to the chemical release parameter while 5 was assigned for all others. AE the fraction of the data that are missing exceeded $70\%$ for various toxicity parameters at compared to less than $10\%$ for exposure parameters, the sensitivity of the ranking to the default value was not significant (rank correlation coefficient = 0.98) for toxicity parameters. Bated on this assessment, an improved CRS system (CRS - Korea II) was proposed in which the impact of the chemical release was properly adjusted by changing the multiplicative relationship to additive one and the maximum score to 5. Chemical priority was derived for each of 16 provinces by using CRS-Korea II. The chemical priority was found to significantly vary among the provinces. It was concluded that not only the national chemical priority but the local chemical priority should be taken into account in setting the nationwide chemical monitoring and risk assessment strategy.
In this study, an unbraced five-story steel-framed structure was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to understand the features of structural behavior for the arrangement of semi-rigid connections. An inelastic time history analysis of structural models was performed, wherein all the connections were idealized as fully rigid and semi-rigid. Additionally, horizontal and vertical arrangements of semi-rigid connections were used for the models. A fiber model was utilized for the moment-curvature relationship of a steel beam and a column, a three-parameter power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection, and a three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of a steel beam, column, and connection. The base-shear force, top displacement, story drift, required ductility for the connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were investigated using four earthquake excitations with peak ground acceleration for a mean return period of 2,400 years and for the maximum base-shear force in the pushover analysis of a 5% story drift. The maximum base-shear force and story drift decreased with the outer vertical distribution of the semi-rigid connection, and the required ductility for the connection decreased with the higher horizontal distribution of the semi-rigid connection. The location of the maximum story drift differed in the pushover analysis and the time history analysis, and the magnitude was overestimated in the pushover analysis. The outer vertical distribution of the semi-rigid connection was recommended for the base-shear force, story drift, and required ductility for the connection.
The mechanical seals, which are installed in rotating machines like pump and compressor, are generally used as sealing devices in the many fields of industries. The failure of mechanical seals such as leakage, crack, breakage, fast and severe wear, excessive torque, and squeaking results in big problems. To identify abnormal phenomena on mechanical seals and to propose the proper monitoring parameter for the failure of mechanical seals, sliding wear experiments were conducted. Acoustic emission, torque, and temperature were measured during experiments. Optical microstructure was observed for the wear processing after every 10 minute sliding at rotation speed of 1750 rpm and scanning electron microscopy was also observed. Except for the initial part of every experiment, the variation of acoustic emission was well coincided with torque variation during the experiments. This study concludes that acoustic emission and torque are proper monitoring parameters for the failure of mechanical seals. The intensity of acoustic emission signals is measured in root mean square voltage. Temperature of sealing face will be used as a parallel parameter for increasing the reliability of monitoring system.
The purpose of this study was to analyze of the GRF (ground reaction force) parameters according to the change of positions and weights of bag during downward stairs between dominant and non-dominant in upper & lower limbs. To perform this study, participants were selected 9 healthy women (age: $21.40{\pm}0.94yrs$, height: $166.50{\pm}2.68cm$, body mass: $57.00{\pm}3.61kg$, BMI: $20.53{\pm}1.03kg/m^2$), divided into 2 carrying bag positions (dominant arm/R, non-dominant arm/L) and walked with 3 type of bag weights (0, 3, 5 kg) respectively. One force-plate was used to collect GRF (AMTI OR6-7) data at a sample rate of 1000 Hz. The variables analyzed were consisted of the medial-lateral GRF (Fx), anterior-posterior GRF (Fy), vertical GRF (Fz), impact loading rate and center of pressure (COPx, COPy, COP area, COPy posterior peak time) during downward stairs. 1) The Fx, Fy, Fz, COPx, and COP area of GRF were not statistically significant between dominant leg and non-dominant leg, but non-dominant leg, that is, showed the higher COPy, and showed higher impact loading rate than that dominant leg during downward stairs. 2) In bag wearing to non-dominant arm, Fx, Fz, COPx, COPy, impact loading rate and COP area showed increase tendency according to increase of bag weights. Also, against bag wearing to dominant arm, non-dominant showed different mechanism according to increase of bag weights. The Ground Reaction Force parameters showed different characteristics according to the positions and weights of bag during downward stairs between dominant and non-dominant arm.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Excessive intake of simple sugars induces obesity and increases the risk of inflammation. Thus, interest in alternative sweeteners as a sugar substitute is increasing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of saccharin on inflammation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. MATERIALS/METHODS: 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were differentiated into adipocytes. The adipocytes were treated with saccharin (0, 50, 100, and 200 ㎍/mL) for 24 h. Inflammation was induced by exposure of treated adipocytes to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 18 h and cell proliferation was measured. The concentration of nitric oxide (NO) was measured by using Griess reagent. Protein expressions of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and inhibitor κB (IκB) were determined by western blot analysis. The mRNA expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were determined by real-time PCR. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the amount of NO and the mRNA expression of iNOS in the LPS-treated group were increased by about 17.6% and 46.9%, respectively, (P < 0.05), and those parameter levels were significantly decreased by saccharin treatment (P < 0.05). Protein expression of NF-κB was decreased and that of IκB was increased by saccharin treatment (P < 0.05). Saccharin decreased the mRNA expression of COX-2 and the inflammation cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, MCP-1, and TNF-α) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that saccharin can inhibit LPS-induced inflammatory responses in 3T3-L1 adipocytes via the NF-κB pathway.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of sodium lauryl sulfate upon the saturation solubility of carbamazepine, its dissolution kinetics, and $T_{50\%}$ defined as the time required for dissolving $50\%$ of carbamazepine. Water, 0.1N-HCI, and phosphate buffers at pH 4.0 and 6.8 containing 0.1, 0.5, 1, and $2\%$ sodium lauryl sulfate were used as dissolution media. The dissolution study was conducted by using the USP dissolution apparatus II with an agitation rate of 75 rpm. Samples of the dissolution media were taken in 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 min, and the amounts of carbamazepine were determined spectrophotometrically at 285 nm. All dissolution data were fitted well into a four-parameter exponential equation: $Q\;=\;a(1\;-\;e^{-bxt})\;+\;c(1\;-\;e^{-dxt})$. In this equation Q represented $\%$ carbamazepine dissolved at a time t, and a, b, c, and d were constants. This equation led to the calculation of dissolution rates at various time points and $T_{50\%}$. It was found that the dissolution rate of carbamazepine was directly proportional to the aqueous concentration of sodium lauryl sulfate. In addition, under our experimental conditions $T_{50%}$ values ranged from 37.8 to 4.9 min. It was interesting to note that $T_{50\%}$ declined rapidly as the surfactant concentration increased from 0.1 to $0.5\%$, whereas it declined more slowly at concentrations greater than $1\%$. These results clearly demonstrated that the dissolution rate of carbamazepine and duration of its dissolution test could be tailored by optimizing the amount of sodium lauryl sulfate in a dissolution medium.
Application fields of ultrasonic transducers can be divided into two categories, a high ultrasonic resolution required field and a high ultrasonic power required field. This paper is aimed to determine the optimal properties of the matching layers of the transducer for each of the applications. Further, it is aimed to optimize the properties of the matching layers that show satisfactory performances for both of the application fields. Through the direct time domain analysis of the transmission and reflection behavior of the ultrasonic wave, apart from the conventional equivalent circuit analysis, and Fourier transformation of its results, we found the optimum acoustic impedances of the matching layers. The newly determined layers provide much better transducer performance-57% at most-than those obtained with conventional design methods. Based on the results, we also found the optimal acoustic impedances of the layers good for both of the application fields. For te optimization, we developed a new transducer performance evaluation parameter that can be applied to any type of ultrasonic transducers.
