  • In this study, acoustic emission (AE) signals due to surface cracking and moisture movement in the flat-sawn boards of oak (Quercus Variablilis) during drying under the ambient conditions were analyzed and classified using the principal component analysis. The AE signals corresponding to surface cracking showed higher in peak amplitude and peak frequency, and shorter in rise time than those corresponding to moisture movement. To reduce the multicollinearity among AE features and to extract the significant AE parameters, correlation analysis was performed. Over 99% of the variance of AE parameters could be accounted for by the first to the fourth principal components. The classification feasibility and success rate were investigated in terms of two statistical classifiers having six independent variables (AE parameters) and six principal components. As a result, the statistical classifier having AE parameters showed the success rate of 70.0%. The statistical classifier having principal components showed the success rate of 87.5% which was considerably than that of the statistical classifier having AE parameters.

  • In recent years the acoustic emission technique has been increasingly applied for detecting flaw s and cracks in materials either under testing or in service. It is important that what is the origin of AE signals detected by AE transducers. The purpose of this paper is to detect AE source on ductile material such as pressure vessel steel, A533B. As the results of experimentation, the increase of AE events number is proportional to the increase of the volume of plain strain zone. The origin of AE signals is fracture of MnS inclusions which have small amplitude of AE waves.

  • The grinding operation is an important machining process for machining of final surface. However, grinding process has inevitable troubles such as loading and glazing for grinding wheel. It is, therefore, an essential research theme to determine the wheel life and the dressing time for efficient grinding. In this study, AE signals (AEavg) generated in the grinding operation were measured and the dressing time was determined from the analysis of the AEavg value. To verify the propriety of the obtained result, the AE signals measured on the grinding and the dressing operation were compared with the grinding force signals and the dressing force which were measured at same time. From the obtained result, it was confirmed that the determination of the wheel life and the dressing tilde by the AE measurement technique proposed in this study can be practically used.

  • This study conducts uniaxial compression tests on intact and single crack-contained rocks to investigate the time-frequency domain characteristics of acoustic emission (AE) signals monitored during the deformation failure process. A processing approach, short-time Fourier transform (STFT), is performed to obtain the evolution characteristics of time-frequency domain of AE signals. The AE signal modes at different deformation stages of rocks are different. Five modes of AE signal are observed during the cracking process of rocks. The evolution characteristics of time-frequency domain of AE signals processed by STFT can be utilized to evaluate the damage process of rocks. The difference of time-frequency domain characteristics between intact and cracked rocks is comparatively analyzed. The distribution characteristics of frequency changing from a single band-shaped cluster to multiple band-shaped clusters can be regarded as an early warning information of damage and failure of rocks. Meanwhile, the attenuation of frequency enables the exploration of rock failure trends.

  • In this paper, the frequency spectra from respective mechanical noise signals detected using ultrasonic wave and AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor were analysed to under spark generation between brush and commutator side with arbitrarily 15$^{\circ}$ rotation for brush from the DC motor in operation. Also, the frequency spectra from respective magnetizing noise signals detected using ultrasonic wave and AE sensor were analysed to under neutral point for brush from the DC motor in normal operation. And the analyses and comparison between the mechanical noise signal and magnetizing noise signal of ultrasonic wave with brush location change from the DC motor in operation. As the experimental results, tile mechanical noise signal of ultrasonic wave under spark generation between brush and commutator side with brush location change from the DC motor in operation were increased about 2.5∼3.0 times than magnetizing noise signal of ultrasonic wave form the DC motor in normal operation. Also, the main frequency band for mechanical noise signals of AE under spark generation between brush and commutator side with brush location change from the DC motor in operation, appeared about 1.3[MHz]∼l.5[MHz] by the fast fourier transform.

  • Turning experiments are conducted to investigate characteristics of acoustic emission due to wear of the coated tool. The AE signals are obtained with a sensor attached to tool holder side. Tool states are identified with scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. It is demonstrated that the AE signals provide reliable informations about the cutting processes and tool states. Moreover, tool wear can be detected successfully using the AE-RMS.

  • Piezoceramic transducers have been widely used in the health monitoring of civil structures. However, in most cases, they are used as sensors either to measure strain or receive stress waves. This paper proposes a method of using piezoelectric transducers as strain gauges and acoustic emission (AE) sensors simultaneously. The signals received by piezoceramic transducers are decomposed into different frequency components for various analysis purposes. The low-frequency signals are used to measure strain, whereas the high-frequency signals are used as acoustic emission signal associated with local damage. The b-value theory is used to process the AE signal in piezoceramic transducers. The proposed method was applied in the bending failure experiments of two reinforced concrete beams to verify its feasibility. The results showed that the extracted low-frequency signals from the piezoceramic transducers had good agreement with that from the strain gauge, and the processed high-frequency signal from piezoceramic transducers as AE could indicate the local damage to concrete. The experimental results verified the feasibly of structural health monitoring using piezoceramic transducers as strain gauges and AE sensors simultaneously, which can advance their application in civil engineering.

  • In this paper, when void of XLPE was existed, electrical tree was growth in branch-type, and it was growth in bush-type when void of XLPE was not existed. Moreover, charge magnitude of partial discharge by deterioration time of XLPE sample was about proportion to output voltage of AE signals. When void was existed, charge magnitude of partial discharge, the output voltage Vp-p value of AE signals were increased with increasing deterioration time. However, when void were not existed, charge magnitude of partial discharge, the output voltage Vp-p value of AE signals were increased in fast deterioration time, but it were decreasing at after in middle deterioration time. Frequency spectrum response of AE signal was about 100-250[kHz].

  • Acoustic emission(AE) signals during the polymerization shrinkage of composite resin subjected to the LED light exposure were detected through a wave guide method and a direct sensor attachment method. For PMMA, human tooth, stainless steel substrate, data of AE hits and amplitudes were compared. For the test using the wave guide, AE amplitudes decreased because of the attenuant wave. However, AE hits and 1st peak frequency distribution were not different according to the sensor attachments. Through the experiments, wave guide could be used for a nondestructive evaluation of the marginal disintegrative fracture of dental restoration.
