  • Acoustic emission(AE) measurement was carried out to evaluate the fracture behavior of high tension steel. Fracture toughness $K_{AE}$ could be determined reasonably by using the load value corresponding to an abrupt change of the accumulated AE counts AE emitted from the test specimens. AE characteristics of the base metal, the weld metal and the heat-affected zone could be distinguished using a constant value b which represented the AE amplitude distribution, Consequently the structure integrity can be evaluated by variation of the constant b at the load level. In addition it was found that AE signals due to crack growth have high amplitude but low rise time and duration.

  • Existing surface defects in structural members often act as sites of fatigue crack initiation, and if undetected, these cracks may grow through the thickness of the member, leading to catastrophic failure of the structure. Thus, in-service monitoring of fatigue cracks through reliable and effective nondestructive techniques is an important ingredient in the leak-before-break (LBB) design and safe operation of defects critical structures. An advanced, waveform-based, acoustic emission (AE) technique has been used in this paper to study the characteristics of the signals emanating from the initiation, growth and through-the -thickness penetration of surface fatigue crack in a 6061 aluminum plate. The goal of this experimental study is to determine whether the evolution of the fatigue crocks could be identified from the properties of the waveforms produced during the tests. The AE waveform signals detected at different stages of crack growth was found to have different temporal and spectral characteristics. The data analysis technique presented here can be applied to real-time monitoring of the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in structural components.

  • A successful on-line monitoring system for conventional machining operations has the potential to reduce cost, guarantee consistency of product quality, improve productivity and provide a safer environment for the operator. In fine-shape machining, typical signs of tool problems such as vibration, noise, chip flow characteristics and visual signs are almost unnoticeable without the use of special equipment. These characteristics increase the importance of automatic monitoring in fine-shape machining, however, sensing and interpretation of signals ar more complex. In addition, the shafts of the mini-tools break before the typical extensive cutting edge of the tool gets damaged. In this study, the existence of a relationship between the characteristics of the cutting force and tool usage was investigated, and tool breakage detection algorithm by LabVIEW was developed and the following results are obtained. It was possible to use a relative error compare which mainly used in established experiment and investigated tool breakage detection algorithm in time domain which can detect AE and cutting force signals more effective and accurate.

  • The strain and acoustic emission (AE) signals of Pocheon granite were measured during uniaxial compression tests to investigate microcrack formation and damage. Crack closure, initiation, and damage stresses of each sample were determined through an analysis of the crack volumetric strain and stiffness. The samples experienced four damage stages according to stress levels: stage 1 = crack closure stage; stage 2 = elastic stage; stage 3 = crack initiation stage; stage 4 = crack damage stage. At least 75% of all AE signals occurred in stages 3 and 4, and different AE parameters were detected in the four stress stages. Rise time, count, energy, and duration clearly showed a tendency to gradually increase with the damage stress stage. In particular, the rise time, energy, and duration increased by at least 95% in stage 4 as compared with stage 1. However, the maximum amplitude showed a smaller increase, and the average frequency decreased slightly at higher stages. These results indicate that as the degree of rock damage increases, the crack size grows larger. The crack types corresponding to the AE signals were determined using the relationship between RA (Rise time / Amplitude) values and average frequencies. Tension cracking was dominant in all stress stages. Shear cracking was rare in stages 1 and 2, but increased in stages 3 and 4. These results are consistent with previous studies that reported cracking begins after samples have already been damaged. Our study shows that the state of rock damage can be investigated solely through an analysis of AE parameters when rocks are under compressive stress. As such, this methodology is suitable for understanding and monitoring the stress state of bedrock.

  • To detect the failures in machine, the signals of current, vibration and acoustic emission are widely used in industry. And unexpected failures of gears are not only extremely damaging but also lead to economic losses. In this paper, to detect the misalignment occurred at between two gears in gearboxes, the signals of current, vibration and AE were measured at gearbox and motor power line. FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) was used for current and vibration signal analysis to find gear failure frequency. Especially, the envelop analysis and wavelet transform were applied for AE signal. Therefore, compared with the results of three kinds of signal, the possibility of earily detection by AE is identified or checked.

  • Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.
