An acoustic leak monitoring system(ALMS) using acoustic emission(AE) technique was applied for leakage detection of nuclear power plant's pipeline which is operated in high temperature and pressure condition. Since this system only monitors the existence of leak using the root mean square(RMS) value of raw signal from AE sensor, the difficulty occurs when the characteristics of leak size and shape need to be evaluated. In this study, dual monitoring system using AE sensor and accelerometer was introduced in order to solve this problem. In addition, artificial neural network(ANN) with Levenberg.Marquardt(LM) training algorithm was also applied due to rapid training rate and gave the reliable classification performance. The input parameters of this ANN were extracted from varying signal received from experimental conditions such as the fluid pressure inside pipe, the shape and size of the leak area. Additional experiments were also carried out and with different objective which is to study the generation and characteristic of lamb and surface wave according to the pipe thickness.

In order to detect the partial discharge with the metallic particle in GIS the AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor was designed and simulated by ANSYS 5.5 and manufactured as the coupled vibration mode. The measured resonant frequency and the maximum sensitivity frequency of three coupled AE sensors were as follows ; 147.88 kHz in 8.1mm $\Phi$$\times$8.1mm 128.82 kHz and 58.8 kHz in 9.5 mm$\Phi$$\times$9.5mm, 85.22 kHz and 32.6 kHz in 14.3 mm$\Phi$$\times$14.3 mm, resonant frequency of the AE sensor. The AE sensor of 9.5 mm$\Phi$$\times$9.5mm responded higher than the other coupled vibration mode AE sensor at the partial discharge detection in GIS.

In terms of productivity, the speed of machining process has been increasing in most of engineering part. But the tapping process does not reach at enough level compared with other machining processes because of its complicate cutting mechanism. In the high speed tapping process, the one of important elements is tool monitoring system to prevent tool breakage. This paper describes tool monitoring system by acoustic emission(AE) in the tapping process. We used 2 types of AE sensors in this test. The one is commercial sensor which is used in other machining monitoring system like polishing and the other is a self-fabricated sensor for this test. In this test we purpose to find out the frequency of AE signal in tapping process and verify the possibility of applying AE sensor in in-process tapping monitoring system. Also grasp of characteristic of tapping process by AE signal is handled.

Die polishing technology is very critical to determine quality and performance of the final products. Generally, the rotation-type tool is used most widely in the polishing process. However it is difficult to make the mirror surface, because the method using the rotation-type tool causes a lot of tiny scratch on the polished surface. This paper proposes a new method using the oscillation-type tool that reduces the scratch and improves the surface roughness. As result. the mirror surface was able to obtain by using the oscillation-type tool. AE is known to be closely related to material removal rate(MRR). As the surface is rougher, MRR gets larger and AE increase. The surface roughness can be indirectly estimated using the AE signal measured during automatic die polishing process. In this study. an AE sensor based monitoring system was developed to investigate the relation the level of AE RMS with the surface roughness during polishing process.
To compare the sensor performance of AE leak diagnosis system which can measure valve leak conditions, AE activities such as RMS voltage level, AE signal trend, leak rate degree according to AE database, FFT spectrum were measured on valve of the simulated test system for power plant. AE activities were recorded and analyzed from various operating conditions including different temperature, pressure difference, valve size and fluid using both piezoelectric acoustic emission sensor and Pb-Free acoustic emission sensor. The results of this study are utilized to select the type of sensors, the frequency band for filtering and thereby to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for diagnosis or monitoring of valves in operation. As the final result of application study above, portable type leak diagnosis system by AE was developed. The outcome of the study can be definitely applied as a means of the diagnosis or monitoring system for energy saving and prevention of accident for power plant valve.

Acoustic emission(AE) signals during the polymerization shrinkage of composite resin subjected to the LED light exposure were detected through a wave guide method and a direct sensor attachment method. For PMMA, human tooth, stainless steel substrate, data of AE hits and amplitudes were compared. For the test using the wave guide, AE amplitudes decreased because of the attenuant wave. However, AE hits and 1st peak frequency distribution were not different according to the sensor attachments. Through the experiments, wave guide could be used for a nondestructive evaluation of the marginal disintegrative fracture of dental restoration.

In this paper, the frequency spectra from respective mechanical noise signals detected using ultrasonic wave and AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor were analysed to under spark generation between brush and commutator side with arbitrarily 15$^{\circ}$ rotation for brush from the DC motor in operation. Also, the frequency spectra from respective magnetizing noise signals detected using ultrasonic wave and AE sensor were analysed to under neutral point for brush from the DC motor in normal operation. And the analyses and comparison between the mechanical noise signal and magnetizing noise signal of ultrasonic wave with brush location change from the DC motor in operation. As the experimental results, tile mechanical noise signal of ultrasonic wave under spark generation between brush and commutator side with brush location change from the DC motor in operation were increased about 2.5∼3.0 times than magnetizing noise signal of ultrasonic wave form the DC motor in normal operation. Also, the main frequency band for mechanical noise signals of AE under spark generation between brush and commutator side with brush location change from the DC motor in operation, appeared about 1.3[MHz]∼l.5[MHz] by the fast fourier transform.

Unlike other non-destructive inspection method, AE Structural defects that are likely to grow in the operation status can be detected, and the advantage of being due to the continuous monitoring of large structures has been widely used to evaluate the stability. AE sensor used to detect sound wave that occurs between 20kHz to 20MHz. and Sound wave result may vary depending on sensor's sensitivity. In this paper, Tensile test conducted on STS 304 and SS400, and tries to detect the crack signal. In tensile test, specimens were conducted using different sensor sensitivity to the same tensile test condition. The crack signal parameters divided into 4 types of communities by conducting cluster analysis. It was demonstrated that crack signal of two sensor is not different by statistical analysis of null hypotheses. Based on the results, waveform of this tension test is crack signal.

Acoustic emission (AE) sensors have broadly used to monitor the damage of underground structures and tunnels. The reliability of measured signal is determined by the coupling condition of the AE sensors which are embedded in the target underground structure. To secure the reliability of health monitoring results, it is important to understand the characteristics of the coupling materials. In this study, laboratory tests were performed using portland cement, micro cement, and gypsum as coupling materials in order to verify the bleeding characteristics. The effective parameters for bleeding were determined to be water-cement ratio, material type, curing time, and injected volume of coupling materials. As a results of the experimental study, the bleeding rate increases with an increase in a water-cement ratio and an injected volume; for portland cement, water-cement ratio and injected volume effects are larger than the micro cement. However, curing time is not much effective for occurrence of the bleeding phenomenon. It is anticipated that this study may be useful for the selection of suitable coupling materials for installation of acoustic emission sensors.
