  • The reduction behavior of silver ions to silver nanoparticles is an important research topic in polymer/silver salt complex membranes for facilitated olefin transport, because it has a significant effect on the long-term stability of membrane performance. In this study, the effects of solvent on the formation of silver nanoparticles and long-term membrane performance in polymer/silver salt complex membrane were investigated. This effect was assessed for the complexes of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) $(PVP)/AgBF_{4}$ with the use of ionic liquid (IL), acetonitrile (ACN) and water as a solvent. Membrane performance test shows that long-term stability is strongly dependent on the kind of solvent and arranged: IL > ACN >> water.

  • This study was performed to evaluate accuracy and precision of filter method and impinger method for analyzin airborne isocyanates in mixture (2, 6-TDI, HDI, 2, 4-TDI, MDI). Filter method was performed using the OSHA Method 42 and impinger method using the NIOSH Method 5521. The samples were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UVD). After the optimum operating conditions for each method were investigated, samples with various concentration levels were quantified at the conditions. The precision was expressed by the pooled coefficient of variation(C.V.) and the accuracy by overall accuracy. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The optimum condition of filter method was determined at 35/65 ACN/buffer (0.01 M ammonium acetate) in mobile phase. And in case of impinger method, it was at 30/70 ACN/buffer(0.2 M sodium acetate). The effect of concentrations of acetate on the separation of the peaks was not significant, but, the effect of ACN/buffer ratio was significant. 2. The correlation coefficients for the two methods were above 0.9 in all isocyanate compounds. Average recovery efficiencies for 2, 6-TDI, HDI, 2, 4-TDI and MDI in filter method were 92.4%, 102.6%, 87.3% and 101.0%, respectively. Those in impinger method were 106.6%, 106.7%, 99.0% and 103.6%, respectively. As a result, the recovery efficiency of impinger method was higher than those of filter method in analyzing isocyanate compounds. 3. The pooled coefficients of variations of the methods were slightly higher than expected. The overall accuracies of the methods were within $\pm 25%$ for each isocyanate compound. Since these results satisfy NIOSH criteria, the accuracy of the experiment is appropriate. 4. As seen above, impinger method is more efficient than filter method. But, there are many disadvantages in impinger method. Therefore, solid sorbent such as a glass fiber filter must be developed in order to have the high efficiency not less than that of impinger method in the future.

  • An addressable conducting network (ACN) makes it possible to monitor the condition of a structure using the electrical resistance between electrodes on the surface of a carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) structure. To improve the damage detection reliability of the ACN, the contact resistances between the electrodes and CFRP laminates needs to be minimized. In this study, silver nanoparticle electrodes were fabricated via printed electronics techniques on a CFRP composite. The contact resistance between the silver electrodes and CFRP were measured with respect to various fabrication conditions such as the sintering temperature of the silver nano-ink and the surface roughness of the CFRP laminates. The interfaces between the silver electrode and carbon fibers were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on this study, it was found that the lowest contact resistance of $0.3664{\Omega}$ could be achieved when the sintering temperature of the silver nano-ink and surface roughness were $120^{\circ}C$ and 0.230 a, respectively.

  • In this study, a previous DNPH (2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method to measure the concentration of formaldehyde in ambient and source environments has been improved. To improve the disadvantage of the previous HPLC method, an appropriate composition ratio of mobile phase (water: acetonitrile (ACN)) was determined and an isocratic analysis was conducted. Furthermore, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation(LOQ), accuracy, and precision were investigated to verify the reliability of the analytical conditions determined. Finally, samples of exhaust gases from five different industrial facilities were applied to HPLC analytial method proposed to determine their formaldehyde concentrations. The appropriate composition ratio of the mobile phase under the isocratic condition was a mixture of water(40%) and ACN(60%). As the volume fraction of the organic solvent ACN increases, retention time of the formaldehyde peak was reduced. Detection time of formaldehyde peak determined using the proposed isocratic method was reduced from 7 minutes(previous HPLC method) to approximately 3 minutes. LOD, LOQ, accuracy, and precision of the formaldehyde determined using standard solutions were 0.787 ppm, 2.507 ppm, 93.1%, and 0.33%, respectively, all of which are within their recommended ranges. Average concentrations of the formaldehyde in five exhaust gases ranged from 0.054 ppm to 1.159 ppm. The lowest concentration (0.054 ppm) was found at samples from waste gas incinerator in a bisphenol-A manufacturing plant. The highest was observed at samples from the absorption process in manufacturing facilities of chemicals including formaldehyde and hexamine. The analytical time of the formaldehyde in ambient air can be shortened by using the isocratic analytical method under appropriate mobile phase conditions.

  • The equilibrium solubilization capacity of pure hydrocarbon oils by 2.5 wt% $C_{12}E_8$ nonionic surfactant solution was measured at $30^{\circ}C$ by gas chromatography (GC) analysis. Experimental results indicated that the molar solubilization ratio (MSR) for pure alkanes was found to decrease almost linearly with the alkane carbon number (ACN) of the hydrocarbon oil. For the binary mixture systems of the hydrocarbon oils both selective and nonselective solubilization behaviors were observed depending on the difference in carbon number of the two hydrocarbon oils. Equilibrium solubilization tests for the two n-octane/n-nonane and n-nonane/n-decane mixture systems in $C_{12}E_8$ surfactant solutions suggest slightly selective solubilization in favor of n-octane, but the small difference in solubilization rates between two hydrocarbon oils does not allow ruling out non-selective solubilization for these particular systems. This is certainly not the case for the n-octane/n-decane mixture, for which selective solubilization was conclusively demonstrated by GC analysis data.

  • For the effective control of weeds in mechanically transplanted paddy field weeding effects of naproanide ${\alpha}$-(${\beta}$-naphthoxy) propion anilide], pyrazolate [4-2, 4-dichlorobenzoyl)-1, 3-dimethyl pyrazol-5-yl-p-tolune sulphanate], chlormethoxynil (2, 4-dichloro-phenyl-4-nitro-3-methoxy phenyl ether), SL-49 [1-3dimethyl-4(2, 4dichlorobenzoyl)-5-phenacyloxy pyrazole], ACN (3-chloro-2-amino-l, 4-naphthoquinone) either alone or in combination with butachlor (2-chlor-2, 6-diethyl-N-buthoxymethyl acetanilide) were compared. Pyrazolate and SL-49 were most effective for the control of Sagittaria pygmaea MIQ. and Potomogeton distinctus A. BENN. including most annual weeds. Weeding effect of butachlor alone was very high for annuals, good for Cyperus serotinus ROTTB. and poor for S. pygmaea and P. distinctus. But the weeding effect of the combination of butachlor and pyrazolate was stronger than that of butachlor alone and therefore this mixture was effective for S. pygmaea, P. distinctus and C. serotinus including all the annual weeds. The combination of butachlor and SL-49 showed the same tendency as the combination of butachlor and pyrazolate. Naproanilide was not effective for the control of Echinochlor crusgalli P. BEAUV and less effective for Monochoria vaginalis PRESL, but excellent for S. pygmaea. By mixing butachlor with naproanilide weeding, spectrum for annuals and S. pygmaea was much increased by that for P. distinctus and C. serotinus was not satisfactory. ACN was not satisfactory for the control of all the tested weeds but the weeding effect was increased in general by mixing with butachlor. Chlormethoxynil was excellent for the control of annual weeds but it has no effect on C. serotinus, S. pygmaea and P. distinctus showing some initial controling effect but these weeds regrew afterwards. The weeding activity of ACN increased in combination with butachlor and the residual activity was stronger than that of ACN alone. A light crop injury was found at the initial period after treatments in all treated plots. The yield from all treated plots except those from plots treated with ACN, butachlor and naproanilide were not significantly different from the band weeded plot.
