The present study is to examine the ACI code equations for computing the unbonded tendon stress at flexural failure of prestressed beams. The equations examined for their validity are Eq. 18-4 and Eq. 18-5 of the ACI 318-95. Since the possibility of overestimation was expected with the equations, a numerical study, first, was carried out with influential variables included. From this study, it was found that amount of reinforcements, effective prestress, location of tendons, and loading type may affect the overestimation of the unbonded tendon stress. Then, an experimental study was carried out with those variables. A total of 8 specimens was tested to prove the theoretical findings as well as the effect of those variables. As a result. it was proven that the ACI Code equations can overestimate significantly the unbonded tendon stress for certain cases.
The present study is to investigate the possibility of overestimation or underestimation when the ACI Code equations are used to evaluate the unbonded tendon stress. An experimental program was planned with 6 beams which divided into two groups. Each group consisted of 3 beams to check the possibility of overestimation or underestimation of unbonded tendon stress. The experimental results were also compared with various design equations including the one proposed by Moon and Lim. It was proven that the ACI Code equations may overestimate or underestimate the unbonded tendon stress in certain cases.
The current study is a part of series of research about the evaluation method of the unbonded tendon stress in prestressed concrete member at flexural failure. As the first part. previous design equations were examined in oder to find whether any modifications may be needed. A total of 167 experimental results tested for more than 40 years were gathered to build D/B and then previous proposed and codified equations were evaluated with the experimental relsults. The ACI Code equation and Naaman, Harajli, and Chakrabarti's equations were chosen for the purpose of examination. Then, the followings were obtained from the analytical examination. It is desirable to compute the tendon stress with the member analysis method instead of the sectional analysis method which has been used in the current ACI Code. The tendon stress may also be influenced significantly by the amount of ordinary bonded reinforcements and the loading types. And the current ACI Code overestimated the effect of span/depth ratio. As results, it was concluded that the revision of the ACi Code equation should be considered positively. Then, a new design has to be proposed with the reasonable and comprehensive investigation about influential factors on the tendon stress variation.
Recent research has indicated that the current ACI shear provision provides unconservative predictions for large slender beams and beams with low level of longitudinal reinforcement, and conservative results for deep beams. To modify some problems of ACI shear provision, ultimate shear strength equation considering size effect and arch action to compute shear strength in high-strength concrete beams without stirrups is presented in this research. Three basic equations, namely size reduction factor, rho factor, and arch action factor, are derived from crack band model of fracture mechanics, analysis of previous some shear equations for longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and concrete strut described as linear prism in strut-tie model deep beams. Constants of basic equations are determined using statistical analysis of previous shear testing data. To verify proposed shear equation for each variable, effective depth, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, concrete compressive strength and shear span-to-depth ratio, about 300 experimental data are used and proposed shear equation is compared with ACI 318-99 code, CEB-FIP Model code, Kim &Park's equation and Zsutty's equation. The proposed shear equation is not only simpler than other shear equations, it is but also shown to be economical predictions and reasonable safety margin. Hence proposed shear strength equation is expected to be applied to practical shear design.

To modify some problems of ACI shear provisions, ultimate shear strength equation considering size effect and arch action to compute shear strength in high-strength concrete beams without stirrups is presented in this research. Three basic equations, namely size reduction factor, rho factor, and arch action factor, are derived from crack band model of fracture mechanics, analysis of previous some shear equations for longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and concrete strut described as linear function in deep beams. Constants of basic equations are determined using statistical analysis of previous shear testing data. To verify proposed shear equation for each variable, namely d, , ρ, f/sub c/' and aid, about 250 experimental data are used and proposed shear equation is compared with ACI 318-99 code, CEB-FIP Model code, Kim & Park's equation and Zsutty's equation. While proposed shear equation is simpler than other shear equations, it is shown to be economical predictions and reasonable safety margin. Hence proposed shear strength equation is expected to be applied to practice shear design.
Significant changes have been made to estimate the punching shear capacity for edge column-slab joints in the latest editions of most current codes. The revised equations account for axial forces as well as moments conveyed to columns from slabs, which have a substantial impact on the punching resistance of such joints. Many key design parameters, such as reinforcement-ratio, concrete strength, size-effect, and critical-section perimeter, were treated differently or even ignored in various code provisions. Consequently, wide ranges of predicted punching shear strength were detected by applying different code formulas. Therefore, it is essential to assess the various current Codes' design-equations. Because of the similarity in estimated outcomes, only the ACI, EC, and SNiP are used in this study to cover a wide range of estimation ranges from highly conservative to unconservative. This paper is devoted to analyzing the techniques in these code provisions, comparing the estimated punching resistance with available experimental data, and finally developing efficient models predicting the punching capacity of edge column-slab connections. 63 samples from past investigations were chosen for validation. To appropriately predict the punching shear, newly updated equations for ACI and SNiP are provided based on nonlinear regression analysis. The proposed equations'results match the experimental data quite well.

The current American Concrete Institute(ACI), Canadian Standard Associate(CSA) and CEB-FIP Model Code 2010 provisions on the shear strength of a simply supported deep beam suggest that deep beams should be designed using the strut-and-tie model. Although this is a useful methodology to design members in disturbed regions, the quality of the design is highly dependent on the truss model that designers create. However, Hong et al. derived the shear strength equations of reinforced concrete deep beams. This thesis investigates the validity of the current ACI, CSA and CEB-FIP code provisions on the shear strength of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams by comparing them with the shear strength equations proposed by Hong et al. The comparison shows that all of these code provisions provide reasonable estimates on the shear strength of concrete deep beam members and the selection of an internal truss model plays an important role on the estimation of shear strength.

The ACI 318-05 code requires the maximum amount of shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) beams to prevent possible sudden shear failure due to over reinforcement. The design equations of the maximum amount of shear reinforcement provided by the current four design codes, ACI 318-05, CSA-04, EC2-02, and JCI-99, differ substantially from one another. The ACI 318-05, CSA-04, and EC2-02 codes provide an expression for the maximum amount of shear reinforcement ratio as a function of the concrete compressive strength, but Japanese code does not take into account the influence of the concrete compressive strength. For high strength concrete, the maximum amount of shear reinforcement calculated by the EC2-02 and CSA-04 is much greater than that calculated by the ACI 318-05. This paper presents the effects of shear reinforcement ratio and compressive strength of concrete on the maximum shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams. Ten RC beams having various shear reinforcement ratio were tested. Although the test beams were designed to have much more amount of shear reinforcement than that required in the ACI 318-05 code, all beams failed due to web concrete crushing after the stirrups reached the yield strain.

This paper proposes a model for the calculation of the ultimate torsional strength in normal-strength and high-strength concrete beams which include the concrete contribution strength and use a reasonable thickness of shear flow. The adequacy of the proposed model is evaluated by comparing the calculated torsional strength with the experimentally observed results from 104 test specimens reported in the literature. The results are also compared with the calculations of the KCI and the ACI building code equations, and those of other model which include the concrete contribution strength. The comparisons show that the ultimate torsional strengths calculated by the proposed equation and Rahal's equation are closer to the experimentally observed results than those calculated by the code equations.

Reinforced concrete deep beams are commonly used in many structural applications, including transfer girders, pile caps, foundation walls, and offshore structures. The existing design methods were developed and calibrated using normal strength concrete test results, and their applicability th HSC deep beams must be assessed. For the shear strength prediction of high-strength concrete(HSC) deep beams, this paper proposed Softened Strut-and-Tie Model(SSTM) considered HSC and bending moment effect. The shear strength predictions of the refined model, the formulas the ACI 318-02 Appendix A STM, and Eq. of ACI 318-99 11.8 are compared with the collected experimental data of 74 HSC deep beams with compressive strength in the range of 49-78MPa . It is shown the shear strength of deep beam calculated by those equations are conservative on comparing test results. The comparison shows that the performance of the proposed SSTM is better than the ACI Code approach for all the parameters under comparison. The parameters reviewed include concrete strength, the shear span-depth ratio, and the ratio of horizontal and vertical reinforcement. The proposed SSTM gave a mean predicted to experimental ratio of 0.99, 32 percent higher than ACI 318-02 Code, however with the low coefficient variation.
