  • As a direct-view flat panel displays, there are many devices, such as plasma display panels(PDPs), vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), and light emitting diode(LED). Among these, a PDP is the first type of panel display to be made commercially available. A 'Plasma display' is the general term for a flat display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. However, the brightness and Luminous efficiency are still not adequate for consumer television. So, the new sustain electrode type of ac PDP was proposed. By arranging the transparent electrode of quadrangle by zigzag, the area of electrode are reduced, and the length of electrode gap is increased. It generates a high luminous efficiency(corresponding to a 40% improvement of standard type), the same discharge voltage characteristics, and the low power consumption at same luminance.

Reciprocal Sustain and Auxiliary Pulse Waveforms Applied to an AC PDP with an Auxiliary Electrode

  • Modified pulse waveforms were applied to an AC plasma display panel with an auxiliary electrode in order to improve the operation voltage margin. Reciprocal sustain pulse waveforms and modified auxiliary pulse waveforms were applied to the sustain and auxiliary electrode, respectively. During the sustain period, the influence of the address electrode on the luminous efficacy of long-coplanar gap discharges was mitigated by application of reciprocal sustain pulse waveforms. Modified auxiliary pulse waveforms maintained the high efficacy obtained from the AC PDP with an auxiliary electrode. The proposed reciprocal sustain and modified auxiliary pulses waveforms can induce stable discharges in long-coplanar gap discharges and can control wall charges with a wider auxiliary pulse voltage margin, thereby enhancing the luminous efficacy of the AC PDP with an auxiliary electrode.

  • Recently, in order to improve the characteristics of operating voltage, brightness, discharge time lag, luminous efficacy of ac PDP, the PDP with high Xe partial pressure has been investigated. However, the serious problems in this case is to increase the operating voltage of ac PDP. In this study, in order to meet this problem the influences of kr gas in Ne-Xe-Kr ternary gas system is investigated for wide range of Xe partial pressure in terms of operating voltage, driving margin, luminance and luminous efficacy.

The Optimum Phosphor Thickness to Obtain the Highest Luminance and Luminous Efficiency in ac PDP

  • Plasma display panel(PDP) have gained great attention due to their potential application to large-area display including HDTV. The luminance and luminous efficiency of PDP, however, should be improved to realize this goal. In this study, we examined experimentally the effects of phosphor thickness and discharge gap on the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac PDP. For the rib height of 110 ${\mu}m$, whereas the optimum phosphor thickness was about 30 ${\mu}m$. The optimum thickness of green phosphor was about 50 ${\mu}m$ for the rib height of $120{\sim}160\;{\mu}m$.

Optimization of Optical Transmittance in Plasma Display Panel (PDP의 광투과특성 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • Refractive index was matched using the inhomogeneous dielectric layers to enhance the optical transmittance of surface discharge type AC PDP. The transmittance of upper panel which had two index-matched inhomogeneous dielectric layers was measured as 85%, and this result is regarded as 15% better transmittance than that of conventional structure, which is about 70%.

  • An address voltage stabilization circuit for the single-side driving (SSD) method for AC plasma display panels (PDP) is proposed. The single-side driving method, which eliminates a common sustaining driver, uses only two electrodes in a three electrode AC PDP structure. The high-impedance (Hi-Z) mode operation of the data drive ICs during the sustaining period is needed for surface gas-discharge without misfiring in the SSD method but it produces the problem that the address voltage increases up to the breakdown voltage. The proposed circuit based on a flyback converter can stabilize the address voltage under the breakdown voltage and provide better surface gas-discharge performance without any misfiring in the SSD scheme.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of several functional layers over the MgO protective layer were studied during the continuous discharge of an AC-PDP. In order to observe the degradation of each functional layer on the MgO protection layer, we measured the surface morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum, the secondary electron emission coefficient (${\gamma}$) and the discharge characteristics after 500 hours of discharge during the operation of the AC-PDP.

  • We have investigated the luminous efficiency of various cell resolution and structure from 50" FHD to 50" QFHD Plasma Display. The suggested test panels have two different cell array types which are the delta and matrix cell array type. The results showed that, in the case of the suggested QFHDs, the firing and sustain voltage were increased and voltage margin was decreased. These results are caused by the reduced wall voltage and increased charged particle loss, at the side wall. The luminance of the suggested QFHDs was lower from 20% to 40% than that of the suggested FHDs and the power consumption was higher from 42% to 83% than that of the suggested FHDs. In conclusion, the maximum luminous efficiency of the suggested QFHD(D110) has reached about 38%, compared with suggested FHDs($\fallingdotseq$ 2.7 lm/W).

Influence of sintering temperature of MgO pellet on the electro-optical characteristics of alternating current plasma display panel (AC-PDP)

  • We have investigated the electro-optical characteristics of AC-PDP with different MgO protective layers, which have been deposited by electron beam evaporation from various sintered pellets with different temperatures. We have measured the secondary electron emission coefficient ($\gamma$) by using the Gamma Focused Ion Beam ($\gamma$-FIB) system, the static margin, and the address delay time. Also, we have investigated photoluminescence (PL) characteristics for understanding the energy levels of MgO pellets and protective layers.

Analysis on the Aging Process of ac-Plasma Display Panel

  • AC-plasma display panels were examined before and after the aging process to analyze the effect of the aging process. The gas analysis was done to detect the impurity gases out of the MgO film and phosphor by a residual gas analyzer. There were no differences found in the components. The MgO film was analyzed to find out the effect of an ion bombardment due to discharge. The surface roughness of the MgO film was different from regional groups due to the different degree of ion bombardments. XPS analysis showed that the 8 hour aging process was not sufficient to remove $Mg(OH)_2$ and $MgCO_3$ existed on the MgO surface. Photoluminescence measurement showed the small deterioration of blue and green phosphor.
