  • This paper presents a capacitive power transfer (CPT) system using a Class-E resonant inverter. A Class-E resonant inverter is chosen because of its ability to perform DC-to-AC inversion efficiently while significantly reducing switching losses. The proposed CPT system consists of an efficient Class-E resonant inverter and capacitive coupling formed by two flat rectangular transmitter and receiver plates. To understand CPT behavior, we study the effects of various coupling distances on output power performance. The proposed design is verified through lab experiments with a nominal operating frequency of 1 MHz and 0.25 mm coupling gap. An efficiency of 96.3% is achieved. A simple frequency tracking unit is also proposed to tune the operating frequency in response to changes in the coupling gap. With this resonant frequency tracking unit, the efficiency of the proposed CPT system can be maintained within 96.3%-91% for the coupling gap range of 0.25-2 mm.

  • Magnetic properties through controlled nucleation and crystallization wer studied for ferrimagnetic 40Fe2O3-20CaO-40SiO2 glass useful as thermoseeds for hyperthermia of tumor therapy. The maximum nucleation and crystal growth temperature are $700^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The glass showed the maximum saturation magnetization of 168.4 emu/cm3 when nucleated $700^{\circ}C$ for 60 min and crystal grown at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs. The maximum coercive force was 390 Oe when uncleated $700^{\circ}C$ for 60 min and crystal grown at 975$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The variation of the saturation magnetization could be well quantitatively interpreted in terms of the volume fraction of the magnetite whereas that of the coercive forces could be explained only qual.itatively in terms of the particle size of the magnetite. Hysteresis losses showed the maximum value of 0.18W/cm3 when heat treated at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs pre-necleated at $700^{\circ}C$ for 60 min and temperature increase of 7K under AC magnetic field of 10 kOe and 10kHz.

  • Direct torque control (DTC) of induction machines (IM) is a well-known strategy of these drives control which has a fast dynamic and a good tracking response. In this paper a nonlinear DTC of speed sensorless IM drives is presented which is based on input-output feedback linearization control theory. The IM model includes iron losses using a speed dependent shunt resistance which is determined through some effective experiments. A stator flux vector is estimated through a simple integrator based on stator voltage equations in the stationary frame. A novel method is introduced for DC offset compensation which is a major problem of AC machines, especially at low speeds. Rotor speed is also determined using a rotor flux sliding-mode (SM) observer which is capable of rotor flux space vector and rotor speed simultaneous estimation. In addition, stator and rotor resistances are estimated using a simple but effective recursive least squares (RLS) method combined with the so-called SM observer. The proposed control idea is experimentally implemented in real time using a FPGA board synchronized with a personal computer (PC). Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the capability and validity of the proposed control method.

  • Superconducting motor has a lot of benefits from high power density for ship propulsions, so a number of research project are in progress worldwide. Despite of all the benefits, there is always a difficulty of cryo-moving part for conventional air-core superconducting synchronous motors. In order to get rid of this moving cryogenic part, we propose a homopolar superconducting synchronous motor, which has high temperature superconducting armature and field coils. The rotor is supposed to be made of iron only and excited by the stationary HTS field coils. The stationary field coils make the cooling system simple and easy to realize because there is no cryo-moving part. A design result of a 10 hp homopolar synchronous motor is presented in this paper. The self and mutual inductance of the motor having the size of air gap as variable parameter are calculated by a 3-dimemsional finite element method. The value of design variables such as the dimension of a motor and the number of turns, etc. is decided by performing the coordinate transformation of the calculated inductance. The operating frequency is supposed to be below 5 Hz for low rotating speed which is needed for a purpose of ship propulsion. Low frequency also has the benefit of low AC losses.

  • Unlike an AC system, a DC system does not cause problems with synchronization, stability, reactive power, system losses, and cost. However, more research is still required for the application of DC Systems. This paper proposes a stable black-start strategy for a stand-alone DC micro-grid, which consists of an energy storage system, photovoltaic generator, wind-turbine generator, diesel generator, and DC loads. The proposed method is very important for avoiding inrush current and transient overvoltage in the power system equipment during restoration after a blackout. PSCAD/EMTDC software was used to simulate, analyze, and verify the method, which was found to be stable and applicable for a stand-alone DC micro-grid.

  • We fabricated Bi-2223 multi-filaments superconductor tape and evaluated the effect of twisting on the microstructural evolution and critical current. Twist pitches of the tapes are in the range of 70- 8mm and uniformly deformed. It was observed that grain size and the degree of texture decreased as decreasing pitch probably due to the formation of the irregular interface between Ag and filaments. In addition critical current of the tapes decreased to 6.5 A with decreasing pitch to 8mm, showing 48% of degradation compared to the untwisted tapes decreased to 6.5 A with decreasing pitch to 8mm, showing 48% of degradation compared to the untwisted tape(12.5 A). These reduction of critical current may be related to the interface irregularity smaller grain size worse texture and the presence of cracks due to the induced strain during twisting processing.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a novel zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) soft-switching H-bridge inverter. Because the conventional H-Bridge inverter generates switching losses at turn on and off, the efficiency is reduced. The proposed inverter operates ZVS switching using an auxiliary switch and resonant circuit to improve the efficiency. in the DC-DC converter stage, it can reduce not only switching loss but also capacity and size of passive devices due to the resonant elements. DC-AC inverter stage supplies load with energy through the ZVS operation of 4 switches. A detail mode analysis of operating is in presented. We have presented the inverter topology, principle of operation and simulation results obtained from the PSIM simulator.

  • A high temperature superconducting power transformer gets its advantages over the conventional ones when the rated capacity of the HTS transformer becomes 30 MVA or more. The standard capacity of the recent 154 kV/ 22.9 kV power transformer is 3 phase 60 MVA in Korea which means that the rated current of the secondary becomes more than 1,500 amps. Considering the current capacities of the HTS wires being developed recently, it is inevitable to use the HTS wires in parallel in order to be applied to the power transformer. But nonuniform distribution of currents and large AC losses are major problems in parallel HTS windings setting aside the difficulties of making parallel windings. To solve these problems, several kinds of multiply laminated HTS wires were fabricated and tested for the application of these multiple wire to an HTS power transformer. Test results were compared with that of each other and the best were selected for the application to an HTS power transformer.

  • In this study, the photolithography process was chosen to reduce the aspect ratio of the cross-section of a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape by dividing the superconducting layer of the tape. Reducing the aspect ratio decreases the magnetization losses in the second-generation HTS tapes generated by AC magnetic fields. The HTS tape used in the experiment has a thin silver (Ag) layer of about 2 ㎛ on top of the REBCO superconducting layer and no additional stabilizer layer. A dry film resist (DFR) was laminated on top of the HTS tape by a lamination method for the segmentation. Exposure to a 395 nm UV lamp on a patterned mask cures the DFR. Dipping with a 1% Na2CO3 solution was followed to develop the uncured film side and to obtain the required pattern. The silver and superconducting layers of the REBCO films were cleaned with an acid solution after the etching. Finally, the segmented HTS tape was completed by stripping the DFR film with acetone.

  • In recent years, as the demand for distributed power has increased, the need for microgrids connected to grid power and renewable power generation sources has emerged. In the case of DC microgrids, reactive power does not occur, and power conversion losses are reduced compared to AC when connecting to the load and power grid[2]. With the revitalization of the DC distribution network industry, various studies and demonstrations of DC microgrids have been carried out. In the case of the recent unit distribution, its stability and effectiveness have been verified through empirical and research analysis. However, there is a lack of empirical tests to prevent chain accidents for the protection of the power grid circuits and the misoperation of the distributed power system caused by individual accidents when connecting various distributed power sources and power grids. In this paper, the operation plan of a stable multi-circuit DC distribution connection for the demonstration site was verified through the protection cooperation and operation algorithm for the stable linkage management of the DC distribution network composed of such a multi-circuit.
