  • In this paper, a capacitance estimation scheme for DC-link capacitors for single-phase AC/DC PWM converters is proposed. Under the no-load condition, a controlled AC current (30[Hz]) is injected into the input side, which then causes AC voltage ripples at the DC output side. Or, a controlled AC voltage can be directly injected into the DC output side. By extracting the AC voltage/current and power components on the DC output side using digital filters, the capacitance value can be calculated, where the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm is used. The proposed methods can be simply implemented with software only and additional hardware is not required. From the experiment results, a high accuracy estimation of capacitances less than 0.85% has been obtained.

  • In this paper, the novel method is proposed to measure the capacitance of the dc link capacitor Advantage of the method is not to separate capacitor from 3-phase AC/DC/AC converters. In the proposed method, a specific low frequency current is injected to oscillate the voltage of dc capacitor at no load condition. The capacitance of dc capacitor is calculated with the effective values of this ripple voltage and current. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by PSIM simulation.

  • We have proposed the dimming controller using the AC chopper technique. The AC chopper changes the amplitude of the input source voltage with the same frequency. The conventional dimming controller is operated by controlling voltage phase with the triac. It has bad characteristics of the input current THD and the input power factor But the dimming controller using the ac chopper technique has a low current THD and a good power factor. The developed dimming controller is consist of the IGBT and the low pass filter. The system is operated by the variation circuit of the input source voltage and the microprocessor.

  • This paper presents exact Autotransformers(ATs)-fed AC electric Railroad system modeling using constant current mode far locomotives. An AC electric railroad system is rapidly changing single-phase load, and at a feeding substation, 3-phase electric power is transferred to paired directional single-phase electric power. As the train moves along a section of line between two adjacent ATs. The proposed AC electric railroad system modeling method considers the line self-impedances and mutual-impedances. The constant current mode model objectives are to calculate the catenary and rail voltages with the loop equation. When there are more than one train in the AC electric railroad system, the principle of superposition applies and the only difference between the system analyses for one train. Finally, this paper shows the general equation of an AC electric railroad system, and that equation has no relation with trains number, trains position, and feeding distance.

  • In this paper, dc link ripple currents for three-phase ac/dc/ac PWM converters are analyzed in a frequency domain. The expression of the harmonic currents is developed by using switching functions and exponential Fourier series expansion. The dc link ripple currents with regard to power factor and modulation index are investigated. In addition, the effect of the displacement angle between the switching periods of line-side converters and load-side inverters on the do link ripple current is studied. The result of the do link current analysis is helpful in specifying the dc link capacitor size and its life time estimation.

  • In order to widely disseminate LED lighting, LED lighting technology that directly uses AC commercial power has been recently introduced. AC powered LED lighting technology has a problem in that the light brightness of the LED changes because the voltage applied to the LED and the current flowing through the LED continuously change. In this study, when the LED current is greater than the design current, the current control signal generated by the controller is supplied to the current source to supply only the design current to the LED by increasing the voltage drop at the current source. If it is smaller than the design current, the controller is adjusted so that the current is supplied only to the LED without a voltage drop in the current source. It can be seen that the higher the maximum rectified voltage, the faster the lighting time of the LED light emitting block is, so that the power factor of the LED lighting is improved. The LED lighting technology proposed in this study enables LED lighting with constant light brightness, reduced power consumption, and long lifetime.

  • This paper proposes an active-clamp ac-dc converter with direct power conversion that has a simple structure and achieves high efficiency. The proposed converter is derived by integrating the step-down ac chopper and the output-voltage doubler. The proposed converter provides direct ac-dc conversion and dc output voltage without using any full-bridge diode rectifier. The step-down ac chopper using an active-clamp mechanism serves to clamp the voltage spike across the main switches and provides zero-voltage turn-on switching. The resonant-current path formed by the leakage inductance of the transformer and the resonant capacitor of the output-voltage doubler achieves the zero-current turn-off switching of the output diodes. The operation principle of the converter is analyzed and verified. A 500W prototype is implemented to show the performance of the proposed converter. The prototype provides maximum efficiency of 95.1% at the full load.
