  • The authors analyzed harmonic current based loss of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) DC model cable. The loss in HTS DC cable is generated due to the variation of magnetic field caused by harmonic current in a HVDC transmission system. The authors designed and fabricated two meters of HTS DC model cable for verification of real loss characteristic. In this paper, the loss characteristics caused by harmonic current in the HTS DC model cable are analyzed using commercial finite element method software package. The loss of the HTS DC cable is much less than the loss of the HTS AC cable but the loss should be considered to decide a proper capacity of cooling system.

  • DC high-temperature superconducting(HTS) cable system has attracted a great deal of interest from the view point of low loss, dense structure and large capacity. A HTS cable system is made of cable and termination. The insulating materials and insulation technology must be solved for the long life, reliability and compact of cable system. In this paper, we will report on the dielectric breakdown characteristics of insulating materials for HTS cable and termination. The AC, DC and lightning impulse breakdown strength of laminated polypropylene paper(PPLP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) have been measured under nitrogen pressures in the range of 0.l-0.4MPa. PPLP and GFRP are found to have a significantly higher DC breakdown strength. Also, DC surface flashover voltage of negative polarity is slightly higher than that of positive polarity in GFRP.

  • Demonstrations to deploy high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable to the real gird are actively carried out throughout the world. Power utilities have an interest in the inherent advantage of the HTS cable system, and achieve the expected results from the series of verification test. To embody the reliability in the phenomenon occurred commonly in three-phase system, we simulate the load unbalance. A 22.9 kV large scale HTS cable system with the specification of 100 m-long, 50 MVA capacity has been tested with up to 30% unbalance rate. To evaluate the effect of AC loss increase due to the unbalanced load, the cooling loads are measured by the calorimetry method. In this paper, the correlation between AC loss and load unbalance is described and investigated precisely.

  • We have studied design and application about an self generation equipment for underground power transmission cable. The split CT(Current Transformer), which has the applicable underground power transmission cable, was manufactured through electromagnetic simulation of magnetic core. And manufactured the AC-DC converter that supplied stable DC power for PLC modem when current of power line has more than 150A. An self generation equipment using the CT and AC-DC converter get into operation the PLC modem consistently. As a result, the underground power transmission cable was showed the application possibility through the stable communication and network characteristics.

  • Research on aged insulation of cables by stress is constantly being considered for reliable and stable power transmission of offshore wind farms. This study aimed to evaluate the insulation characteristic of aged XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation for application of offshore wind farms. In this study, The XLPE insulation of cable was set as various mechanical strains. The XLPE insulation is exposed to the mechanical stress below yield strain of 5%, 10%, and 20%. Aged samples were tested by using the method of AC BDV (alternative current breakdown voltage), tensile strength, elongation, and SEM (scanning electron microscope) to obtain insulation characteristics. The experimental results show that the dielectric breakdown of the sample with a strain 20% was 50% lower than the unaged sample; thereby, demonstrating that the mechanical strain that occurred in the submarine cables can weaken the insulation characteristics. Therefore, mechanical strain should be monitored when laying and operating submarine cables for offshore wind farms.

  • It is important to mechanical properties of dielectric paper and cable to optimum electrical insulation design of HTS cable, because the cable has experience of mechanical stress, such as tensile stress, bending stress. Also, it is operated at cryogenic temperature. From the results, it was observed that the tensile strength of PPLP in liquid nitrogen was high more than that of air, but tensile strain decrease sharply. According as tensile strength increases, the breakdown stress of PPLP in liquid nitrogen is decreased. Because PPLP was deteriorated by microcrack and tensile strain. According as bending radius multiple is decrease, the ac and impulse breakdown stress of mini-model cable is sharply decreased.

  • It is important to predict AC loss in $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC) reliably for the design and operation of large superconducting coils. The hysteresis loss in the superconducting filaments and coupling loss within strands and among strands in a cable or composite are dominant ac losses in superconducting magnets. The coupling loss in a superconductor can be characterized by identifying the coupling constant time $n{\tau}$. To reduce the coupling loss, all the strands (superconductor and Cu) in KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advance Research) are chromium plated with thickness of $l{\pm}0.5{\mu}m$. The ac losses of PF1, PF5 and PF6 coils has been measured by calorimetric method while applying trapezoidal current pulses with various ramp rate from 0.5 kA/s to 2 kA/s. The coupling time constants for $Nb_3Sn$ coils are $25{\sim}55$ ms and the values are not co-related with the coil size, the time constants for NbTi coil is 30 ms.

  • This paper introduces experimental investigates of an electrical accident of the distributing cable termination with simulated a shoddy construction. We prepared two termination kites, one is built-in type, the other is heat contraction type. Also, we manufactured cable termination that have simulated defect by badness construction and investigated their insulation characteristics such as ac (35[kV], 1[min]) and impulse (95[kV], $1.2{\times}50[{\mu}s]$) withstand test. The influence of defects such as thickness decrease, the gap between stress-con of housing and semiconductor and heating time on insulating properties of the termination have been studied. The thickness decrease of an insulator decreases ac breakdown strength suddenly and the breakdown traces of the insulator that is damaged by knife displayed elliptic shape. The gap of between stress-con and semiconductor deteriorates dielectric strength of insulator seriously. In heat contraction type, the ac breakdown voltage became low when the heating time is short.
