  • Strands composing multistage superconducting cables for AC power applications have twisted structure in each stage for lower AC loss and higher stability. So, when transport currents flow in a cable, each strand is exposed to longitudinal and azimuthal magnetic fields produced by transport current flowing in strand itself and Iongitudinal and transverse magnetic fields by transport current flowing in twisted cable. In this paper. we study the influence on self field lesses generated in second stage superconducting cable for different twist direction of filaments in a strand considering twist of strands in cables.

  • Multiply-twist cable is used for a large capacity superconducting cable because it is helpful to reduce AC losses and to increase transport current. In a multiply-twisted cable, the axis of a strand does not coincide with that of cable. Therefore, the longitudinal field is generated by the transport current. The longitudinal field changes the current distribution in the strand and generates additional AC loss. This paper calculates the longitudinal field that is applied to a strand in the multiply-twisted cable. Current distribution of a strand in the cable is also presented. 2nd level superconducting cable is chosen as an analysis model, whose current capacity is 2000A. Calculation result shows the longitudinal field cannot be neglected in low field machines such as superconducting transformer.

  • In this work, the effect of annealing on physical and electrical properties of XLPE cable insulation was investigated. One sample was non-annealed and the other two samples were treated under air circulated oven at 80$^{\circ}C$ for five and ten days. In the DSC patterns of annealed specimen, new peaks appeared at near 80$^{\circ}C$ as a proof of thermal history. The degree of crystallinity increased by annealing effect. In the FT-IR spectrums, the change of absorbances to acetophenone and cumyl alcohol were observated according to the radial direction of cable insulation. They slowly diffused into both semi-conductive layer of the cable in proportion to annealing time and lastly led to near equilibrium state through cable insulation. The AC breakdown strength did not increased but the values were stabilized by effects of crystallinity and diffusion of by-products.

  • It is important to control layer current distributions of coaxial multi-layer HTS cables, because a homogeneous layer current distribution decreases AC loss and can supply the largest operational current. We have extended the theory that treat the operational current more than the critical current by considering V-I nonlinear characteristics of HTS tapes including flux flow resistance and contacting resistance between the cable and terminals. It is important to investigate the current distribution under the condition of operational current more than the critical current of cable, because the cable has experiences of fault current. In order to verify the extended theory, we have fabricated a two layers cable with the same twisting layer pitch. It was observed that almost all the operational current less than the critical current flowed on the outer layer because of its lower inductance. In case of operational current more than critical currents of layers, the flux flow resistances affect strongly current waveform and thereby the currents of layers were determined by the flux flow resistances. And we investigated breakdown characteristics in $LN_{2}$/paper composite insulation system for the application to a HTS cable. In this experiment, we got some information out of that the electrical characteristics of the insulation materials depends on the condition of butt gap.

  • NZP velocities were investigated on Ag sheathed multi filamentary Bi-2223 tape and direction type HTS cable. The critical current($I_c$) of Ag sheathed Bi-2223 tape and direction type HTS cable were 12 A, 63 A at 77 K, 0 T. NZP velocities of tape with two condition of DC and AC were almost same at each temperature. In case of DC, the NZP velocities of numerical analysis and experiment were almost same. NZP velocities of direction type HTS cable were 1.9-2.4 cm/sec. The result shows that the total transport current of spiral type HTS cable in $LN_2$ was 475[A], and transport current passed through almost the outer layer (2-layer). Also, AC transport losses in outer layer of HTS cable was proportion to $I^2$ and higher than losses of inner layer. And in case of $I_p=I_c$, calculated numerical loss density was concentrated on the edge of tape and most of loss density in cable was distributed outer layer more than inner layer.

  • 22.9kV 50MVA HTS power cable has been developed and tested by Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute and LS Cable Company and it was supported by a grant from Center for Applied Superconductivity Technology of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program. In this paper, DC Ic of 100m HTS cable which is installed at Kochang testing station was measured and analyzed. A measurement technique of DC Ic used by resistance and inductance removal method is established. The HTS power cable is composed of 2 layers for transmission and 1 layer for shield. For the analysis of AC losses in an HTS power cable, 2-dimensional numerical calculation was carried out to define the magnetic field distribution. We calculated the magnetization losses in the HTS core of that cable from these fields. These calculated results are in accordance with those of experiment.

  • Power cables installed in domestic factories or underground can cause accidents depending on the manufacturing process, installation, and environmental conditions during use. When an accident occurs in a power cable, it can cause enormous economic loss and social confusion. Hence, the importance of preventive management of the cable through diagnosis is increasing to prevent it. Therefore, in this paper, a diagnostic sample cable was produced by simulating a part that could be a problem due to the installation, manufacturing defects, or deterioration of cables that can occur in the field. Dielectric loss Tangent (tan 𝛿; TD), and Partial Discharge(PD) tests were performed. Partial discharge and AC (60Hz) withstand voltage equipment using High-Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT) were applied After applying a VLF (Very Low Frequency) power supply with a frequency of 0.1Hz was applied. As a result, B and C phase defect samples at a 2.0U0 voltage through the VLF could measure the internal partial discharge in the A-phase normal sample cable from the noise at a 0.5U0 to 2.0U0 voltage. In addition, the 1.5U0 voltage was measured through the AC (60Hz) withstand voltage equipment of the commercial frequency to verify its effectiveness. Partial discharge in the run-off state was measured at a voltage of 1.0U0, and there was a risk when installing the equipment. AC power equipment showed a difficulty of movement by volume or weight. The diagnostic method, through the VLF of the quadrant state, revealed its safety and effectiveness.

  • For the insulation design of a high temperature superconducting(HTS) cable, three kinds of design method were proposed, which used AC and impulse withstand voltage and partial discharge inception strength. However, the designed insulation thickness by AC and impulse could not be applied to cable fabrication process due to much low electrical breakdown strength. The effect of the multi-layered insulation paper was not considered on the previous insulation design and the insulation thickness by partial discharge inception strength could be applied only. In this paper, the electrical breakdown characteristic, which considered the effect of multi-layered of LPP, was investigated to design the insulation thickness.
