AC loss is one of the important factors for commercialization of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable from an economic point of view. But AC loss characteristics of the HTS-cable are not elucidated completely because of its complex structure. As an earlier stage of analyzing the AC loss in the 22.9 kV/50 MVA, 100m HTS-cable system of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) which is now in collaboration with us, a two-dimensional (2D) numerical model, which takes into account the nonlinear conductivity properties of a high temperature superconductor, has been developed. In order to examine our 2D model, we have prepared several single-layer cable samples whose AC losses are sufficiently reliable due to their simple structure. The AC losses of the samples were experimentally investigated and then compared with our 2D model. The results show that the numerically calculated AC losses are not in good agreement with the measured ones for the cylindrical cable and deca-cable samples with low critical current density. However, the numerically calculated and measured AC losses are relatively in good agreement for the deca-cable and hex-cable samples with high critical current density, although the difference between these two loss data in the deca-cable sample tends to increase in the low current region.
As the offshore wind farms increase, interest in the efficient power system configuration of submarine cables is increasing. Currently, transmission system of the offshore wind farm uses almost AC system. High temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable of the high capacity has long been considered as an enabling technology for power transmission. The HTS cable is a feasible way to increase the transmission capacity of electric power and to provide a substantial reduction in transmission losses and a resultant effect of low CO2 emission. The HTS cable reduces its size and laying sectional area in comparison with a conventional XLPE or OF cable. This is an advantage to reduce its construction cost. In this paper, we discuss the economic feasibility of the 22.9 kV HTS power cable and the conventional AC power cables for an offshore wind farm connections. The 22.9 kV HTS power cable cost for the offshore wind farm connections was calculated based on the capital expenditure and operating expense. The economic feasibility of the HTS power cable and the AC power cables were compared for the offshore wind farm connections. In the case of the offshore wind farm with a capacity of 100 MW and a distance of 3 km to the coast, cost of the 22.9 kV HTS power cable for the offshore wind farm connections was higher than 22.9 kV AC power cable and lower than 70 kV AC power transmission cable.
The superconducting transmission cable is one of interesting part in power application using high temperature superconducting wire. One important parameter in HTS cable design is transport current sharing because it is related with current transmission capacity and loss. In this paper, we calculate self inductances of each layer and mutual inductances between two layers from magnetic field energy, and current sharing of each layer for 4-layer cable using the electric circuit model which contain inductance and resistance (by joint and AC loss). Also, transport current losses which are calculated by monoblock model and Norris equation are compared. As a results, outer layer has always larger transport current than inner layer, and current capacity of each layer is largely influenced by resistance per unit cable length. As a conclusion, for high current uniformity and low AC loss, we have to decrease inductances themselves or those differences.
Superconducting power cable is one of the most promising energy application of high-T$_{c}$ superconductors (HTS). A prototype HTS cable have been constructed multi-layer cable using Bi-2223 tape and tested. The AC transport losses under self field were investigated at 77K on the 19 filamentary tape and multi-layer HTS cables. And we carried out numerical analysis using bean model. The result shows that the total transport current of HTS cable in L$N_2$ was 475[A], and transport current passed through almost the outer layer (2-layer). Also, AC transport losses in outer layer of HTS cable was proportion to I$^2$ and higher than losses of inner layer. In case of Ip=Ic, calculated numerical loss density was concentrated on the edge of tape and most of loss density in cable was distributed outer layer more than inner layer. As magnetic distribution was concentrated on outer layer.r.
As a research activity of the project of "Verification Test of Superconducting Power Cable", we measured the AC loss of a short length superconducting power cable. The rating and the length of the cable were 22.9kV, 1,250A and 2.2m. The voltage taps for measuring the AC loss were attached to both ends of the conductor of the superconducting cable. Through the voltage taps and a lock-in amplifier we measured the in-phase component of the voltage($V_x$) with the load current(I). The AC loss was measured by multiplying the in-phase component of the voltage($V_x$) by the load current(I). The value of the AC loss of the superconducting power cable was 1.18W/m/phase/kA at 77.3K, 1atm.
An HTS power cable is generally composed of 2 layers for conducting and 1 layer for shielding. For the analysis of AC loss of an HTS power cable, 2-dimensional magnetic field analysis is carried out. The magnetization loss in HTS cable core was calculated, and the transport current loss was obtained from the monoblock equation and the elliptical Norris Equation. And the total AC loss of the cable was expected by the sum of magnetization loss and transport current loss. The variation of ac loss with respect to the gap and uncertain factor between the superconducting tapes was investigated, and the ac loss of 22.9kV/50MVA high-Tc superconducting power cable was calculated. These results well agree with those of experiment.
Hybrid type combined transmission systems is being operated by AC and DC line at the same space will be expanded instead of the overhead line. However, such hybrid type combined system has problem like the arrangement selection of DC cable for effective system operation. In this paper, to select the proper arrangement of DC cable, induced voltage of DC cable influenced by AC cable was analyzed in case of several type arrangement of DC cable. Such induced voltage is in detailed analyzed not only in case of steady, but transient state. The arrangement which has the lowest induced voltage is selected as the proper one. EMTP/ATPDraw is used for modeling and analysis of hybrid type combined transmission system.
22.9 kV CV power cable is very important factor of underground distribution power line. Cyclic aging for 14days is performed to remove a large amount of the volatiles found in freshly manufactured cable. In this paper, we examined AC breakdown characteristics of CV power cable before and after cyclic aging for 14days. As the result, even if there were some exceptions, the AC breakdown voltage before aging was lower than that after aging, but most of the results were that the AC breakdown voltage after aging was lower than that before aging.
Reduction of AC losses is very important for realizing HTS cable and it had been reported that the same layer current controlled by twisting pitch and direction could reduce the AC losses effectively. During the long-term development of HTS cables, the superconductor AC losses will need to be reduced to a level determined by the economics of each installation and the efficiency of the refrigeration. Theoretical models have been developed to predict the magnitude of the losses in cables composed of several layers of flat HTS tapes. This paper is manufactured mini-model HTS cable and voltage signal line to spiral shape. Mini-model HTS cable is composed of 13 HTS tape. We measured to critical current and AC loss and compared used lock-in-amp to cancel coil. This data is useful to HTS cable of DAPAS program.
High temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable system consists of HTS cable, termination and cryogenic system. And the HTS cable consists of the former, HTS phase conductor, electric insulation, HTS shield and cryostat. Taking the advantage of HTS shield, the cold dielectric has been adopted. The phase conductor and the shield have been designed to minimize the AC loss below 1W/m/phase. The former has been designed to transport the fault current of 25kA, at fault condition. This paper describes the design process of 22.9kV HTS cable considering AC losses at normal state and the stability at fault condition.
