Efficiently removing Al(III) from rare earth is very significant because even trace amount of Al(III) can cause serious harm to the rare earth materials. In this paper, a nitrogen-containing activated carbon, AC-P700, was synthesized using peas as raw materials. The AC-P700 was characterized by surface area analyzer, FT-IR, and XPS methods. The adsorption and recognition properties of AC-P700 towards Al(III) were investigated, and the recognition mechanism was also analyzed. The BET special surface area of AC-P700 was $1277.1m^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$, and the average pore diameter was 1.90 nm. The AC-P700 possesses strong adsorption affinity and excellent recognition selectivity towards Al(III). The adsorption capacity for Al(III) could reach to $0.53mmol{\cdot}g^{-1}$, and relative selectivity coefficients relative to La(III) and Ce(III) is 9.6 and 8.7, respectively. Besides, AC-P700 possesses better regeneration ability and reusability.
This study assessed the performance of activated carbon (AC) amendment to treat polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including both parent- and alkylated-moieties in sediment impacted by diesel. A field-collected, diesel-impacted sediment with a NAPL content of 1% was used for the study. No. 2 diesel fuel is weathered by heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for 4 days to obtain a weathered diesel sample having C3-naphthalenes to C2-phenanthrenes/anthracenes (N2/P3) ratio similar to the original sediment. The sediment samples spiked with the weathered diesel to obtain non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contents of 1, 5 and 10% were contacted with AC with a dose of 5% as sediment dry weight for 1 month. By the AC-sediment contact, the freely-dissolved equilibrium concentrations were substantially reduced. Even for sediment with 10% NAPL content, the reductions in the freely-dissolved concentrations were 92% and 75% for total parent-and alkylated-PAHs, respectively. The effect of NAPL contents on the performance of AC was negligible for parent-PAHs, while for alkylated-PAHs, a slightly reduced AC performance was observed. The results suggest that the AC amendment can be an effective option for the treatment of petroleum-impacted sediment with relatively high NAPL contents.
In this study, $TiO_2$-Activated carbon (AC) complex fibers were prepared by electrospinning for the synergetic effect of adsorption and degradation of organic pollutant. The average diameter of these fibers increased with increasing the amount of AC added, except for 1AC-TOF (AC$/TiO_2$ =1/40 mass ratio). After calcinations at $500^{\circ}C$, long as-spun fibers were broken and their average diameter was slightly decreased. The resultant fibers after calcination had rough surface and sphere shapes like a peanut. From XRD results, it was confirmed that as-spun fibers were changed to anatase $Ti_O2$ fiber after calcinations at $500^{\circ}C$. The prepared $TiO_2$-AC complex fibers could remove procian blue dyes by solar light irradiation with high removal property of 94~99%. The PB dye was rapidly removed by adsorption during the initial 5 minutes. But after 5 minutes, dye removal was occurred by photodegradation. In this study, the most efficient AC/$TiO_2$ ratio of $TiO_2$-AC complex fibers was 5/40, showing the synergetic effect of adsorption and photodegradation. It is expected that the $TiO_2$-AC complex fibers can be used to remove of organic pollutants in water system.
In lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, encapsulation of sulfur in activated carbon (AC) materials is a promising strategy for preventing the dissolution of lithium polysulfide into electrolytes and enhancing cycle life, because instead of solid-liquid-solid reactions, quasi-solid-state (QSS) reactions occur in the AC micropores. While a high weight fraction of sulfur in S/AC composites is essential for achieving a high energy density of Li-S cells, the deterioration mechanisms under such conditions are still unclear. In this study, we report the deterioration mechanisms during charge-discharge cycling when the discharge products overflow from the AC. Analysis using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry confirms that the sulfur in the S/AC composites migrates outside the AC as cycling progresses, and it is barely present in the AC after 20 cycles, which corresponds to the capacity decay of the cell. Impedance analysis clearly shows that the electrical resistance of the S/AC composite and the charge-transfer resistance of QSS reactions significantly increase as a result of sulfur migration. On the other hand, the charge-discharge cycling performance under limited-capacity conditions, where the discharge products are encapsulated inside the AC, is extremely stable. These results reveal the degradation mechanism of a Li-S cell with micro-porous carbon and provide crucial insights into the design of a S/AC composite cathode and its operating conditions needed to achieve stable cycling performance.
The merits of activated carbon for removal of organic compounds have been well known in the various industrial fields. Fixing methods with activated carbon in the non-woven fabric have the advantages of fast adsorption and ease of handling when compared with bonding and coating methods. In this study, we have examined deodorization of non-woven fabrics fixed with activated carbon. We have been tested the deodorization of various kinds activated carbon and non-woven fabric structures. The effective mixing ratio of activated carbon was 5% on the weight of fabrics, which are closely related to the fabric structure. The activated carbon with higher mesh size show the better deodorization effect.
The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences plans to produce 225Ac, a therapeutic radio-pharmaceutical for precision oncology, such as prostate cancer. Radon, a radioactive gas, is generated by radium, the target material for producing 225Ac. The radon concentration is expected to be about 2000 Bq·m-3. High-concentration radon-generating facilities must meet radioactive isotope emission standards by lowering the radon concentration. However, most existing studies concerning radon removal using activated carbon filters measured radon levels at concentrations lower than 1000 Bq·m-3. This study measured 222Rn removal of coconut-based activated carbon filter under a high radon concentration of about 2000 Bq·m-3. The 222Rn removal efficiency of activated carbon impregnated with triethylenediamine was also measured. As a result, the 222Rn removal amount of the activated carbon filter showed sufficient removal efficiency in a 222Rn concentration environment of about 2000 Bq·m-3. In addition, despite an expectation of low radon reduction efficiency of Triethylenediamine-impregnated activated carbon, it was difficult to confirm a significant difference in the results. Therefore, it is considered that activated carbon can be used as a radioisotope exhaust filter regardless of whether or not Triethylenediamine is impregnated. The results of this study are expected to be used as primary data when building an air purification system for radiation safety management in facilities with radon concentrations of about 2000 Bq·m-3.

Adsorption and desorption characteristics of methyl iodide at high temperature conditions up to $250^{\circ}C$ by TEDA-impregnated activated carbon, which is used for radioiodine retention in nuclear facility, was experimentally evaluated. In the range of temperature from $30^{\circ}C$ to $250^{\circ}C$, the adsorption capacity of base activated carbon decreased sharply with increasing temperature but that of TEDA-impregnated activated carbon showed higher value even at high temperature ranges. Especially, the desorption amount of methyl iodide on TEDA-impregnated carbon represented lower value than that on unimpregnated carbon. The breakthrough curves of methyl iodide in the fixed bed packed with base carbon and TEDA-impregnated activated carbon at high temperature were compared. TEDA-impregnated activated carbon would be applicable to adsorption process up to $150^{\circ}C$ for the removal of radioiodine in a nuclear facility.

Application of manganese-impregnated activated carbon(Mn-AC) in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing both organic and inorganic contaminants was investigated. Phenol and As(III) was used as representative organic and inorganic contaminants, respectively. When the stability of Mn-AC at acidic condition was evaluated with variation of solution pH ranging from 2 to 4, Mn-AC was unstable below pH 3, while negligible dissolution of Mn was observed above pH 4. This stability test suggests a plausible applicability of Mn-AC in the treatment of wastewater above pH 4. Compared to AC-alone, the adsorption rates of phenol as well as adsorbed amounts of phenol by Mn-AC were slightly decreased due to the decrease of the surface area by impregnation. The maximum adsorbed amount of phenol by Mn-AC was corresponds to 75% of that by AC-alone from the adsorption isotherm study. The oxidation efficiency of As(III) by Mn-AC was greater than that by AC-alone at lower pHs while reverse trend was observed as pH increased above 7. From this work, it was found that Mn-AC could be used in the simultaneous treatment of both phenol and As(III).

We investigated the adsorption/desorption property of volatile organic compounds(VOC) by using activated carbon fibers(ACF) instead of activated carbon(AC) which is conventionally used. The adsorption behavior of the fixed bed and the breakthrough characteristics were also studied. As a result, ACFj showed 1.15 times higher adsorption amount as compared to AC. The breakthrough Point and adsorption amount of VOCs were decreased with the increase of temperature. In the case of AC, desorption time having 99% removal efficiency was about as minutes, but that of ACF was about 5 minutes at same condition.
