Lipid metabolic disorders are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Dyslipidemia and its prevalence rate are strongly associated with the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease worldwide. We conducted a genetic analysis to determine the association between genetic polymorphisms of the ABO gene in adults middle-aged (40~69 years) with dyslipidemia in the Korean population. A total of 6,750 subjects from the Korea Association REsource (KARE) were selected for this study. Using the genetic and epidemiologic data of 4,403 dyslipidemia cases and 2,347 normal controls from the KARE, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ABO gene were analyzed for their genetic correlation. Eleven SNPs out of the ABO gene demonstrated a statistically significant association with dyslipidemia. Among them, rs8176707 in ABO gene statistically showed the most significant correlation with dyslipidemia (P-value=0.002, odds ratio=0.82, 95% confidence interval=0.78~0.86). The minor allele of T polymorphism within the ABO intron genetic region was associated with a decreased risk of dyslipidemia. This study uncovered a significant association between genetic polymorphism in the ABO gene and dyslipidemia. This finding suggest that ABO SNPs markers have a genetic correlation with the etiology of dyslipidemia.
This article deals with the method of ML among the methods of estimating m gene frequenecies in the Generalized ABO-like Blood Group Systems and with the statistical testing about the differencies of gene frequencies by using these estimators. Especially, the generalization about the Homogeneity testing problem is tried and thus it enables us to test of Homogeneity of m gene frequencies. Finally, in the example, ML estimator is compared with other estimators suggested by Bernstein method, by adjusted Bernstein method and by modified Bernstein method, and statistical testing in the above is carried out by using orthogonal partitioning.

Chromatin dynamics is essential for maintaining genomic integrity and regulating gene expression. Conserved bromodomain-containing AAA+ ATPases play important roles in nucleosome organization as histone chaperones. Recently, the high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy structures of Schizosaccharomyces pombe Abo1 revealed that it forms a hexameric ring and undergoes a conformational change upon ATP hydrolysis. In addition, single-molecule imaging demonstrated that Abo1 loads H3-H4 histones onto DNA in an ATP hydrolysis-dependent manner. However, the molecular mechanism by which Abo1 loads histones remains unknown. Here, we investigated the details concerning Abo1-mediated histone loading onto DNA and the Abo1-DNA interaction using single-molecule imaging techniques and biochemical assays. We show that Abo1 does not load H2A-H2B histones. Interestingly, Abo1 deposits multiple copies of H3-H4 histones as the DNA length increases and requires at least 80 bp DNA. Unexpectedly, Abo1 weakly binds DNA regardless of ATP, and neither histone nor DNA stimulates the ATP hydrolysis activity of Abo1. Based on our results, we propose an allosteric communication model in which the ATP hydrolysis of Abo1 changes the configuration of histones to facilitate their deposition onto DNA.
The blood samples collected from 863 school boys living in Seoul, Kwangju, Pusan and Cheju were tested for studies on the distributions and frequencies of ABO, MNSs, Rh, Diego, Duffy, Kell, Kidd and P blood groups. The $I^B$ gene frequencies appeared to be a cline, and this is decreased gradually from north to south except the Cheju population, but on the other hand those of $I^A$ gene increased oppositely. In Koreans A type of ABO group increased during past fifty years while B type decreased. $Ig^M$ gene frequencies also decreased from north to south district in Korea except Cheju. And the frequency of $Ig^M$ in Koreans was 0.518 which is between those of the north Chinese and the Japanese. In general Rh negative was 0.26 percent, and CCDee phenotype was of the highest frequency among all phenotypes, showing 42.41 percent, CcDEe, about 34% and ccdee, 0.087%. The frequencies of most Rh phenotypes in Koreans were close to those of the Japanese rather than to those of the Chinese and the Thais. Di(a+) type was 6.633 percent, and Fy(a+) and Fy(b+) type were 99.267 percent and 13.832 percent respectively. K+ type was observed only one case in Seoul. The frequencies of Jk(a+) and P+ type were the most varied depending on the populations studied.
Purpose: Among tumor-associated antigens, MAGE (melanoma antigen) was named as cancer/testis specific antigens because they are detected exclusively in the testis or cancer cells, including gastric carcinomas. Due to the elicitation of autoimmunitiy to tumors by these antigens either in vitro or in vivo and their tumor specificity, these antigens, thus, appear to be potential targets for tumor-specific immunotherapy. Materials and Methods: The fresh tumor tissue and normal gastric tissue samples were obtained from resected surgical specimens in 53 patients with gastric carcinomas. From the obtained cells, total cellular mRNA was extracted, and RT-PCR and nested PCR were run in 30 and 35 cycles respectively, with two different kinds of primers specially designed to detect six subtypes of MAGE DNA simultaneously. Results: In the 53 normal tissue, there was no expression of MAGE, but in the 53 cancer tissues, MAGE was expressed in 13 tissues (24.5%). Our data did not exhibit any correlation with the expression of the MAGE gene and clinicopathological factors. Conclusion: In our data, since 24.5% of gastric cancer tissues expressed MAGE, it should become possible to immunize a significant proportion of patients with advanced gastric carcinomas against the antigens encoded by these genes, provided that more antigenic peptides encoded by the genes of the MAGE family can be identified in the near future. The chitinase-producing strain SC081 was isolated from Korean traditional soy sauce and identified as Bacillus atrophaeus based on a phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence and a phenotypic analysis. A gene encoding chitinase from B. atrophaeus SC081 was cloned in Escherichia coli and was named SCChi-1 (GQ360078). The SCChi-1 nucleotide sequences were composed of 1788 base pairs and 596 amino acids, which were 92.6, 89.6, 89.3, and 78.9% identical to those of Bacillus subtilis (ABG57262), Bacillus pumilus (ABI15082), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (ABO15008), and Bacillus licheniformis (ACF40833), respectively. A recombinant SCChi-1 containing a hexahistidine tag at the amino-terminus was constructed, overexpressed, and purified in E. coli to characterize SCChi-1. $H_6SCChi$-1 revealed a hydrolytic band on zymograms containing 0.1% glycol chitin and showed the highest lytic activity on colloidal chitin and acidic chitosan. The optimal temperature and pH for chitinolytic activity were $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.0, respectively.
Chlorella vulgaris was isolated from the Nile River, Qalubia Governorate, Egypt, for possible use in biodiesel production. BG-II nutrient growth media was used for isolation and laboratory growth. Identification was performed via 18S rRNA gene amplification, followed by sequencing. The alga was exposed to UV-C (254 nm) for 15, 30, and 45 s to improve dry weight accumulation and to increase the oil production. Daily measurements of dry weight ($g{\cdot}l^{-1}$) were performed; oil content and volumetric lipid productivity were also determined. UV-C exposure led to an increase in the volumetric lipid productivity by 27, 27.3, and $32.4mg{\cdot}l^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ with 15, 30, and 45 s, respectively, as compared with the control, which resulted in $18mg{\cdot}l^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Of the examined mutants, the one with the highest productivity was re-irradiated by UV-C (254 nm) for 15, 30, 45, and 60 s. For 15 s of exposure time, the oil content increased to 34%, while it was 31% at 30 s; further, it decreased to 22% at 45 and 60 s exposures. The fatty acid methyl ester profile was 82.22% in the first mutant at 45 s, compared with the wild strain that contained a total of 66.01% of FAs. Furthermore, the highest levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl ester were observed in the mutant exposed for 45 s, and it reached 11.41%, which reduced the cetane number to 71.3.

Staphylococcus aureus is a cause of high mortality in humans and therefore it is necessary to prevent its transmission and reduce infections. Our goals in this research were to investigate the frequency of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in Taif, Saudi Arabia, and assess the relationship between the phenotypic antimicrobial sensitivity patterns and the genes responsible for resistance. In addition, we examined the antimicrobial efficiency and application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against MRSA isolates. Seventy-two nasal swabs were taken from patients; MRSA was cultivated on Mannitol Salt Agar supplemented with methicillin, and 16S rRNA sequencing was conducted in addition to morphological and biochemical identification. Specific resistance genes such as ermAC, aacA-aphD, tetKM, vatABC and mecA were PCR-amplified and resistance plasmids were also investigated. The MRSA incidence was ~49 % among the 72 S. aureus isolates and all MRSA strains were resistant to oxacillin, penicillin, and cefoxitin. However, vancomycin, linezolid, teicoplanin, mupirocin, and rifampicin were effective against 100% of MRSA strains. About 61% of MRSA strains exhibited multidrug resistance and were resistant to 3-12 antimicrobial medications (MDR). Methicillin resistance gene mecA was presented in all MDR-MRSA strains. Most MDR-MRSA contained a plasmid of > 10 kb. To overcome bacterial resistance, AgNPs were applied and displayed high antimicrobial activity and synergistic effect with penicillin. Our findings may help establish programs to control bacterial spread in communities as AgNPs appeared to exert a synergistic effect with penicillin to control bacterial resistance.
