  • In the field application of the conventional acoustic nonlinear technique using through transmission of bulk waves to evaluate the contact acoustic nonlinearity(CAN) in solid-solid contact interfaces like as in the closed crack, it has difficulty to access inner position for attaching the pulsing or receiving transducer. In the present study, a new reflection technique has been suggested to measure the acoustic nonlinearity in solid-solid contact interfaces, which uses both of pulsing and receiving transducers on the same side of target and so that it will be very useful for the field application. For this, based on the linear and the nonlinear contact stiffness estimated by the power-model of the contacting pressure, the nonlinear parameter of the reflected ultrasonic wave at the interfaces has been theoretically calculated. Experimental results in contact interfaces of A1606l-T6 alloy specimens with loading pressure showed good agreement with the theoretical predictions, which proves the validity of the suggested reflection mode technique.

  • A correlation between fatigue damage and acousto-ultrasonic (AU) parameters has been obtained from signals acquired during fatigue loading of the single-lap joints of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates and A16061 plate. The correlation showed an analogy to those representing the stiffness reduction $(E/E_0)$ of polymer matrix composites by the accumulation of fatigue damage. This has been attributed to the transmission characteristics of acoustic wave energy through bonded joints with delamination-type defects and their influence on the change of spectral content of AU signals. Another correlation between fatigue cycles and the spectral magnitude of acoustic emission (AE) signals has also been found during the final stage of fatigue loading. Both AU and AE can be applied almost in real-time to monitor the evolution of damage during fatigue loading.

  • Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions such as seismic loading are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to these mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique with a special experimental apparatus can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate loading conditions. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of the aluminum alloys such as A12024-T4, A1606 IT-6 and A17075-T6 under both high strain rate compressive and tensile loading conditions are determined using the SHPB technique.

  • This paper is described about the technique of ultra-precision machining for a infrared camera aspheric mirror. A 200 mm diameter aspheric mirror was fabricated by SPDTM. Aluminum alloy as mirror substrates is known to be easily machined, but not polishable due to its ductility. Aspheric large reflector without a polishing process, the surface roughness of 5 nm Ra, and the form error of $\lambda/2\;(\lambda=632.8 nm)$ for reference curved surface 200 mm has been required. The purpose of this research is to find the optimum machining conditions for cutting reflector using A16061-T651 and apply the SPDTM technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of Al-alloy aspheric reflector.

  • To evaluate the applicability of dissimilar metal friction stir welding in automobile manufacturing process, friction stir welding trials were carried out for typical 5000 and 6000 series aluminum alloy sheets with 2mm thickness. The sound joints of A15052 and A16061-T6 alloys were successfully formed under a wide range of welding condition. Excellent weld ability has been obtained at a condition of rotating speed 2000rpm and travel speed 100mm/min, while a radiographic test also confirmed defect free joint for this condition. Through the Erichsen cup test, the plastic formability of the FSWelded joints was found to be about 83% of base metal.

  • The collimation mirror will be used for thermal vacuum testing of spacecraft. The reflection mirror system to generate parallel beam inside the thermal vacuum chamber. A 600mm diameter aspheric Collimation mirror was fabricated by ultra-precision single point diamond turning (SPDT). Aluminum alloy for mirror substrates is known to be easily machining, but not polishable due to its ductility. Aspheric large collimation reflector without a conventional polishing process, the surface roughness of 10nmRa, and the from error of $\lambda/2 ~\lambda/4(\lambda$ =632.8 nm) for reference curved surface 600 mm has been required. The purpose of this research is to find the optimum machining conditions for reflector cutting of A16061-T651 and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of metal aspheric reflector.

  • A smart material is used as spectacle frames and brassiere frames, and partly in medical supplies because of its shape memory effect. The smart composite can be used on the wing of an airplane instead of the existing aluminium to control crack propagation. In this study, the smart composite was fabricated by a hot press method. TiNi alloy as reinforcement and A16061 as matrix were used, respectively. The mechanical properties of the smart composite under thermal shock cycles were evaluated. In addition, Acoustic Emission techniques were also used to clarify the damage behavior of the smart composite under thermal shock cycles nondestructive.

  • Metal matrix composites(MMCs) are rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials for many high temperature application. Among the high temperature environment, thermal shock is known to cause significant degradation in most MMC system. Therefore, the nondestructive evaluation on thermal shock damage behavior of SiC/A16061 composite has been carried out using ultrasonic surface and SH-waves. For this study, Sic fiber reinforced metal matrix composite specimens fabricated by a squeeze casting technique were thermally cycled in the temperature range 25~$400^{\circ}C$ up to 1000 cycles. Three point bend test was conducted to investigate the effect of thermal shock damage on mechanical properties. The relationship between thermal shock damage behavior and the change of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation were discussed by considering SEM observation of fracture surface.

  • TiNi/ Al6061 shape memory alloy (SMA) composite was fabricated by hot press method to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties. Interface bonding between TiNi reinforcement and A1 matrix was observed by using SEM and EDS. Pre-strain was imposed to generate compressive residual stress inside composite. A tensile test for specimen, which under-went pre-strain, was performed at high temperature to evaluate the variation of strength and the effect of pre-strain. It was shown that interfacial reactions occurred at the bonding between matrix and fiber, creating two inter-metallic layers. And yield stress increased with the amount of pre-strain. Acoustic Emission technique was also used to nondestructively clarify the microscopic damage behavior at high temperature and the effect of pre-strain of TiNi/ Al6061 SMA composite.
