Two-dimensional speckle-tracking of antral contraction in dogs

  • This study was purposed to make the referenced range of stomach antral contraction strain in 50 dogs using 2-dimensional speckle tracking. In addition, the strain results were compared among body condition scores to reveal the correlations of obesity among the subjects of the study. Finally, the medetomidine group that was comprised of 10 dogs was compared with the normal group to identify the medetomidine pharmacologic effect in the stomach antral contraction. Clinically healthy 50 dogs were recruited for the study. In an ultrasonographic examination, the stomach antrum region was scanned, and at least one cycle of antral contraction was recorded. The peak strain of antral contraction in healthy dogs was 58.2 ± 20.47% (mean ± SD). The obesity group showed a high strain result and there were significant correlations between the body condition score (BCS) 2, BCS 3 groups and BCS 8 group. The medetomidine group revealed a low strain result and was significantly correlated with normal group. Two-dimensional speckle tracking was useful to the evaluation of stomach motility disorders.

Correlation among Functional Leg Length Discrepancy, Muscle Activity, Muscle Contraction Onset Time and Vertical Ground Reaction Force during Simple Lifting Task

  • Purpose: Leg length discrepancy causes the posture deformation, gait asymmetry, and lower back pain. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation among functional leg length discrepancy (FLLD), muscle activity, muscle contraction onset time and vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during simple lifting task. Methods: Thirty-nine subjects participated in this study. FLLD was measured from the umbilicus to medial malleolus of left and right leg using a tape. The subjects performed to lift a 10 kg box from the floor to chest. The muscle activity and muscle contraction onset time of rectus abdominis, erector spinae and rectus femoris was measured using EMG system and vGRF was measured by two force plate. Pearson correlation was used to fine out the correlation among FDDL, muscle activity, muscle contraction onset time and vGRF during simple lifting task. Results: Correlation between FLLD and difference of muscle activity of short-long side was very high (r>0.9) during simple lifting task. Correlation between FLLD and difference of muscle contraction onset time of short-long side was very high (r>0.9) during simple lifting task. And correlation between FLLD and difference of vGRF of short-long side was high (r>0.7) during simple lifting task. Conclusion: This study suggests that there is high correlation between FLLD and muscle activity, muscle contraction onset time, and ground reaction force during simple lifting task. Therefore, FLLD could negatively affect the postural balance.

Evidence for Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) as an Excitatory Neurotransmitter in Guinea-Pig Gastric Antrum

  • We explore the question of whether adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter in guinea-pig gastric smooth muscle. In an organ bath system, isometric force of the circular smooth muscle of guinea-pig gastric antrum was measured in the presence of atropine and guanethidine. Under electrical field stimulation (EFS) at high frequencies (>20 Hz), NO-mediated relaxation during EFS was followed by a strong contraction after the cessation of EFS (a 'rebound-contraction'). Exogenous ATP mimicked the rebound-contraction. A known $P_{2Y}-purinoceptor$ antagonist, reactive blue 2 (RB-2), blocked the rebound-contraction while selective desensitization of $P_{2Y}-purinoceptor$ with ${\alpha},{\beta}-MeATP$ did not affect it. ATP and 2-MeSATP induced smooth muscle contraction, which was effectively blocked by RB-2 and suramin, a nonselective $P_2-purinoceptor$ antagonist. Particularly, in the presence of RB-2, exogenous ATP and 2-MeSATP inhibited spontaneous phasic contractions, suggesting the existence of different populations of purinoceptors. Both the rebound-contraction and the agonist-induced contraction were not inhibited by indomethacin. The rank orders of agonists' potency were 2-MeSATP > ATP ${ge}$ UTP for contraction and ${\alpha},{\beta}-MeATP\;{\ge}\;{\beta},{\gamma}-MeATP$ for inhibition of the phasic contraction, that accord with the commonly accepted rank order of the classical $P_{2Y}-purinoceptor$ subtypes. Electrical activities of smooth muscles were only slightly influenced by ATP and 2-MeSATP, whereas ${\alpha},{\beta}-MeATP$ attenuated slow waves with membrane hyperpolarization. From the above results, it is suggested that ATP acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter, which mediates the rebound-contraction via $P_{2Y}-purinoceptor$ in guinea-pig gastric antrum.

  • Let (M,p) be a germ of a $C^{\infty}$ CR manifold of CR dimension n and CR codimension d. Suppose (M,p) admits a $C^{\infty}$ contraction at p. In this paper, we show that (M,p) is CR equivalent to a generic submanifold in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$ defined by a vector valued weighted homogeneous polynomial.

고양이 회장 평활근의 수축력에 미치는 Vanadate와 Ouabain의 작용 (Effect of Vanadate and Ouabain on the Contractile Response of Cat Ileal Muscle)

  • Vanadate의 회장 평활근에 대한 수축작용이 Na-K-ATPase를 억제하기 때문인지를 구명하기 위하여 Na-K-ATPase를 억제하는 ouabain과의 작용의 차이를 관찰한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1) Ouabain에 의해 나타나는 수축은 2중 peak를 나타내었으나 vanadate 의해서는 단일 Peak만을 보였다. 2) Ouabain에 의한 수축은 atropine$(2{\times]10^{-6}M)$에 의해 강력하게 억제되었으나 vanadate의 작용은 영향을 받지 않았다. 3) Ouabain에 의한 수축은 vanadate에 비해 외부의 $Ca^{++}4농도 및 Ca-길항제에 대해 민감하게 영향을 받았다. 4) 용액내 $Na^+$이 없을때 혹은 고농도의 $K^+$존재하에서 ouabain에 의한 수축반응은 거의 나타나지 않았으나 vanadate에 의한 수축은 영향을 받지 않았다. 5) Vanadate에 의한 수축은 ouabain 존재시에 더욱 증가되었다. 6) 3시간동안 incubation한 결과 vanadate는 ouabain과 달리 세포내 $Na^+$의 농도에 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 이상의 결과로 보아 ouabain과 vanadate는 서로 다른 기전에 의해 회장 평활근에서 수축반응을 유발시키는 것으로 추측된다.

자궁평활근의 Carbachol 및 Oxytocin 수축에 있어서의 세포내 $Ca^{2+}$ 동원 (Intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ Movement in Contraction Induced by Carbachol and Oxytocin in Rat Myometrium)

  • The properties of cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ level$([Ca^{2+}]_i)$ movement of high KCl, carbachol and oxytocin were examined with myometrium isolated from non-pregnant rat(estrus cycle). High concentration of KCl$({\leq}23.3mM)$ induced rhythmic increases in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and muscle contraction. However, sustained $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and contracion were obtained at higher KCl concentration $({\geq}30.3mM)$ The rhythmic and sustained contraction closely associated with changes in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ induced by high KCl. Carbachol $(3{\sim}30{\mu}M$ generated rhythmic increases with tonic component in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and muscle contraction. Myometrial contraction stimulated by carbachol was also closely correlated with change in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$. And the $[Ca^{2+}]_i/contraction$ relationships were similar when muscle strips were stimulated by high KCl and carbachol. Maximal concentration of carbachol $(10{\mu}M)$ and oxytocin(100 nM) increased $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and contraction which were slightly greater than that of high KCl in non-pregnant myometrium, respectively. However, the $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and contraction were strongly inhibited by verapamil $(10{\mu}M)$, a 1-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, as in the case of high KCl. Additionally, although carbachol further increased $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ and contraction induced by high KCl, these changes also strongly inhibited by application of verapamil. These results suggest that uterotonic agents, carbachol and oxytocin, induced contraction by increase in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ through $Ca^{2+}$ influx than by a regulation of $Ca^{2+}-sensitization$ in non-pregnant myometrium.

Regulation of $Ba^{2+}$-Induced Contraction of Murine Ureteral Smooth Muscle

  • This study was designed to characterize ureteral smooth muscle motility and also to study the effect of forskolin(FSK) and isoproterenol(ISO) on smooth muscle contractility in murine ureter. High $K^+$(50 mM) produced tonic contraction by $0.17{\pm}0.06mN$(n=19). Neuropeptide and neurotransmitters such as serotonin($5{\mu}M$), histamine($20{\mu}M$), and carbarchol(CCh, $10{\sim}50{\mu}M$) did not produce significant contraction. However, CCh($50{\mu}M$) produced slow phasic contraction in the presence of 25 mM $K^+$. Cyclopiazonic acid(CPA, $10{\mu}M$), SR $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase blocker, produced tonic contraction(0.07 mN). Meanwhile, inhibition of mitochondria by protonophore carbnylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone(CCCP) also produced weak tonic contraction(0.01 mN). The possible involvement of $K^+$ channels was also pursued. Tetraethyl ammonium chloride(TEA, 10 mM), glibenclamide($10{\mu}M$) and quinidine($20{\mu}M$) which are known to block $Ca^{2+}$-activated $K^+$ channels($K_{Ca}$ channel), ATP-sensitive $K^+$ channels($K_{ATP}$) and nonselective $K^+$ channel, respectively, did not elicit any significant effect. However, $Ba^{2+}$($1{\sim}2mM$), blocker of inward rectifier $K^+$ channels($K_{IR}$ channel), produced phasic contraction in a reversible manner, which was blocked by $1{\mu}M$ nicardipine, a blocker of dehydropyridine-sensitive voltage-dependent L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels($VDCC_L$) in smooth muscle membrane. This $Ba^{2+}$-induced phasic contraction was significantly enhanced by $10{\mu}M$ cyclopiazonic acid(CPA) in the frequency and amplitude. Finally, regulation of $Ba^{2+}$-induced contraction was studied by FSK and ISO which are known as adenylyl cyclase activator and $\beta$-adrenergic receptor agonist, respectively. These drugs significantly suppressed the frequency and amplitude of $Ba^{2+}$-induced contraction(p<0.05). These results suggest that $Ba^{2+}$ produces phasic contraction in murine ureteral smooth muscle which can be regulated by FSK and $\beta$-adrenergic stimulation.

Effect of two types of muscle contraction training on muscle thickness, strength, and delayed onset of muscle soreness in persons with chronic stroke

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of eccentric contraction training (ECT) and concentric contraction training (CCT) on the muscle thickness (MT), muscle strength (MS) and delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) of the lower extremities in persons with chronic stroke. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty persons with chronic stroke were randomly assigned to the ECT or the CCT group. The ECT was performed in a specially designed system of eccentric contraction of both legs and, the CCT was performed using a traditional stepper system for concentric contraction of both legs. The training was performed for 30 min/times, 3 times/wk for 6 weeks. Rehabilitation ultrasound imaging was used to measure MT of the vastus medialis/lateralis (VL), and soleus (SOL), a digital muscle tester was used to measure MS, and a visual analog scale was used to assess DOMS. Results: In the ECT group, MT was significantly improved except for SOL resting (p<0.01). In the CCT group, the MT was significantly improved except for VL contraction (p<0.05). The MS was significantly improved in both groups, especially in the ECT group (p<0.01). In the ECT group, muscle soreness was highest in the first week after training but gradually decreased, and in the CCT group, it was highest in the second week of training but gradually decreased (p<0.01). Conclusions: ECT can improve lower limb MT, MS, and DOMS of chronic stroke survivors. Therefore, it is recommended that ECT be used in the rehabilitation of persons with chronic stroke.

  • A bounded linear Hilbert space operator T is said to be k-quasi-class A operator if it satisfy the operator inequality $T^{*k}{\mid}T^2{\mid}T^k{\geq}T^{*k}{\mid}T{\mid}^2T^k$ for a non-negative integer k. It is proved that if T is a k-quasi-class A contraction, then either T has a nontrivial invariant subspace or T is a proper contraction and the nonnegative operator $D=T^{*k}({\mid}T^2{\mid}-{\mid}T{\mid}^2)T^k$ is strongly stable.

POM 수지의 수축율을 고려한 사출금형설계 및 성형조건 선정 (The decision of forming condition and design of injection mold by considering contraction rate of POM resin)

  • The contraction rate is a very important element that dominate quality of product in plastic injection molding. To get wanted products, the contraction rate of used resin must be considered necessarily when designing plastic injection molds, and suitable deform conditions must be chosen with this. In this paper, important parts used in LED department were produced by injection mold using POM resin, and dimension error that happened by contraction rate of resin was corrected and reflected in die design and suitable deform conditions were decided.
