  • Using empirical data of fish performance and physiological limits as well as physical stimuli and environmental data, a cod-end selectivity model based on a chaotic behavior model using the psycho-hydraulic wheel and neural-network approach was established to predict fish escape or herding responses in trawl and cod-end designs. Fish responses in the cod-end were categorized as escape or herding reactions based on their relative positions and reactions to the net wall. Fish movements were regulated by three factors: escape time, a visual looming effect, and an index of body girth-mesh size. The model was applied to haddock in a North Sea bottom trawl including frequencies of movement components, swimming speed, angular velocity, distance to net wall, and the caught-fish ratio; simulation results were similar to field observations. The ratio of retained fish in the cod-end was limited to 37-95% by optomotor coefficient values of 0.3-1.0 and to 13-67% by looming coefficient values of 0.1-1.0. The selectivity curves generated by this model were sensitive to changes in mesh size, towing speed, mesh type, and mesh shape.

  • In this paper, the illumination performances of three freeform lenses optimally designed for a point source were investigated for several LEDs with different source sizes, and also the tolerance characteristics of the lenses were analyzed. For comparison, two lenses with different sizes were designed with a divergent illumination model, and the last one was done with an overlapped illumination model. As the LED source size increased, the illuminance uniformity decreased more strongly, and the influence of a source misalignment on illumination performance became insignificant. However, the variation of LED radiation characteristics had strong effect on the illumination performance, irrespective of LED source size. Even though the lens based on a divergent illumination model showed superior performance compared to the lens based on an overlapped illumination model, the latter was less sensitive to the variation of LED radiation characteristics.

  • Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (VHTR) has been selected as a high energy heat source for nuclear hydrogen generation. The VHTR can produce hydrogen from heat and water by using a thermo-chemical process or from heat, water, and natural gas by steam reformer technology. A co-axial double-tube primary hot gas duct (HGD) is a key component connecting the reactor pressure vessel and the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) for the VHTR. In this study, a preliminary design analysis for the primary HGD of the nuclear hydrogen system was carried out. These preliminary design activities include a determination of the size, a strength evaluation and an appropriate material selection. The determination of the size was undertaken based on various engineering concepts, such as a constant flow velocity model, a constant flow rate model, a constant hydraulic head model, and finally a heat balanced model.

  • Analytical models for the prediction of the size of hardened zone in laser surface hardening are presented. The models are based on the solutions to the problem of three-dimensional heat flow in plates with infinite thickness. The validity of the model was tested on medium carbon steel for Gaussian mode of beam. Then the model for rectagular beam was used for the predicition of the size of hardened zone on various hardening process parameters. From the calculation results it appeared that the size and shape of the hardened zone are strongly dependent on process parameters such as beam mode, beam size, and traverse speed.

  • Nowadays an HMM-based text-to-speech system (HTS) has been very widely studied because it needs less memory and low computation complexity and is suitable for embedded systems in comparison with a corpus-based unit concatenation text-to-speech one. It also has the advantage that voice characteristics and the speaking rate of the synthetic speech can be converted easily by modifying HMM parameters appropriately. We implemented an HMM-based Korean text-to-speech system using a small size Korean speech DB and proposes a method to increase the naturalness of the synthetic speech by controlling duration model parameters in the HMM-based Korean text-to speech system. We performed a paired comparison test to verify that theses techniques are effective. The test result with the preference scores of 73.8% has shown the improvement of the naturalness of the synthetic speech through controlling the duration model parameters.

  • The existing Function Point method to estimate the software size has been utilized frequently with the management information system. Due to the expanding usage of the real-time and embedded system, the Full Function Point method is being proposed. However, despite many research is being carried out relation to the software size, the research on the model to estimate the development cost from the measured software size is inadequate. This paper analyzed the linear regression model and power regression model which estimate the development cost from the software FFP The power model is selected, which shows its estimation is most adequate.

  • The inclusion of covariates in the model often affects not only the estimates of meaningful variables of interest but also its statistical significance. Such gap between statistical and subject-matter significance is a critical issue in huge sample studies. A popular huge sample study, the sample cohort data from Korean National Health Insurance Service, showed such gap of significance in the inference for the effect of obesity on cause of mortality, requiring careful consideration. In this regard, this paper proposes a sample size calibration method based on a Monte Carlo t (or z)-test approach without Monte Carlo simulation, and also proposes a test procedure for subject-matter significance using this calibration method in order to complement the deflated p-value in the huge sample size. Our calibration method shows no subject-matter significance of the obesity paradox regardless of race, sex, and age groups, unlike traditional statistical suggestions based on p-values.

  • To improve performance of sentence speech recognition systems, we need to consider perplexity of language model and the number of words of dictionary for increasing vocabulary size. In this paper, we propose a language model of VCCV units for sentence speech recognition. For this, we choose VCCV units as a processing units of language model and compare it with clauses and morphemes. Clauses and morphemes have many vocabulary and high perplexity. But VCCV units have small lexicon size and limited vocabulary. An advantage of VCCV units is low perplexity. This paper made language model using bigram about given text. We calculated perplexity of each language processing unit. The perplexity of VCCV units is lower than morpheme and clause.

  • This study aims to compare the model power in developing corporate credit rating models and to suggest a good way to build models based on the characteristic of data. Among many measurement methods, AR is used to measure the model power under various conditions. SAS/MACRO is in use for similar repetitions to reduce time to build models under several combination of conditions. A corporate credit rating model is composed of two sub-models; a credit scoring model and a default prediction model. We verify that the latter performs better than the former under various conditions. From the result of size comparisons, models of large size corporate are more powerful and more meaningful in financial viewpoint than those of small size corporate. As a corporate size gets smaller, the gap between sub-models becomes huge and the effect of outliers becomes serious.

  • In this paper, we consider the leaky bucket parameter dimensioning problem in the presence of the cell delay variation(CDV) which arises at the customer premises network dud to the multiplexing with other traffic streams. We consider an ATM multiplexer in which a single CBR stream and several heterogeneous VBR traffic streams are multiplexed. Choosing an MMPP model for the bursty traffic streams, we derive an (MMPP+DD)/D/1/K queueing model for the evaluation of the CDV experienced by the CBR stream. We first evaluate the equilibrium queue length distribution embedded at tagged-cell arrival-time instants, based on whcih we calcuate the inter-cell time distribution and the distribution kof the number of tagged-cell departures in an arbitrary interval. Then we apply the analysis to the dimensionging problem of the leaky bucket parameters, examining how the employed traffic model affects the determination of the bucket size. Through numerical examples, we confirm that the Poisson traffic model can underestimate the bucket size, thus causing a considerable blocking probability for compliant use cells while the MMPP model can optimally design the bucket size which keeps the blocking probability under the target value.
