  • Camel (camelus dromedarius) is a unique large mammalian species that can survive harsh environmental conditions and produce milk, meat, and wool. Camel reproduction is inferior when compared to other farm animal species such as cattle and sheep. Several trials have been reported to increase camel reproduction and production through assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) such as in vitro fertilization and cloning. For these reasons, obtaining enough mature oocytes is a cornerstone for ARTs. This demand would be improved by the oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) systems. In this review, the current approaches and views from different laboratories using ARTs and the IVM to produce embryos in vitro in camel species. For the last two decades, conventional IVM system was the common approach, however, recently the bi-phasic IVM system has been introduced and showed promising improvement in IVM of camel oocytes. Detailed studies are needed to understand camel meiosis and IVM to efficiently increase the production of this species.

  • Bronchodilators are the cornerstone of symptomatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment. They are routinely recommended for symptom reduction, with a preference of long-acting over short-acting drugs. Bronchodilators are classified into two classes based on distinct modes of action, i.e., long-acting antimuscarinics (LAMA, once-daily and twice-daily), and long-acting ${\beta}2$-agonists (LABA, once-daily and twice-daily). In contrast to asthma management, evidence supports the efficacy of both classes of long-acting bronchodilators as monotherapy in preventing COPD exacerbations, with greater efficacy of LAMA drugs versus LABAs. Several novel LAMA/LABA fixed dose combination inhalers are currently approved for COPD maintenance treatment. These agents show superior symptom control to monotherapies, and some of these combinations have also demonstrated superior efficacy in exacerbation prevention versus monotherapies, or combinations of inhaled corticosteroids plus LABA. This review summarizes the current data on clinical effectiveness of bronchodilators alone or in combination to prevent exacerbations of COPD.

  • Railway is an important transportation tool for nation's industrial development and public daily life. These days the concern about railway has remarkably been rising due to the April 2004 opening of KTX, Korea High Speed Rail, together with Trans-Continental Railways linking North Korea, China, Russia, through European countries. In the meantime, the issues of train safety and efficiency, arising from the different on-board signaling systems installed on different kinds of trains, have been raised incessantly. In this paper CTCS(Continental Train Control System) is suggested, which can accommodate such various signaling functions as ATP, ATC, ATS, etc. into one single type of on-board signaling system and operate without changing ground signaling systems on the junctions of the Trans-Continental Railways. The development of this CTCS would cause speed-up of exiting lines and possession of railway core solutions for establishing Northeast Asia logistics center bases, which could be an important cornerstone for domestic railway improvements and Korea's role of Northeast Hub.

  • Based on the study of soil water dynamics, this study is to suggest an advanced stochastic soil water model for future study for drought application. One distinguishable remark of this study is the derivation of soil water dynamic controling equation for 3-stage loss functions in order to understand the temporal behaviour of soil water with reaction to the precipitation. In terms of modeling, a model with rather simpler structure can be applied to regenerate the key characteristics of soil water behavior, and especially the probabilistic solution of the derived soil water dynamic equation can be helpful to provide better and clearer understanding of soil water behavior. Moreover, this study will be the future cornerstone of applying to more realistic phenomenon such as drought management.

  • The paper focuses on the establishment of optimized bucket path planning and trajectory control designated for force-reflecting backhoe reacting to excavation environment, such as potential obstacles and ground characteristics. The developed path planning method can be used for precise bucket control, and more importantly for obstacle avoidance which is directly related to safety issues. The platform of this research was based on conventional papers regarding the kinematic model of excavator. Jacobian matrix was constructed to find optimal joint angles and rotation angles of bucket from position and orientation data of excavator. By applying Newton-Raphson method optimal joint angles and bucket orientation were derived simultaneously in the way of minimizing positional errors of excavator. The model presented in this paper was intended to function as a cornerstone to build complete and advanced path planning of excavator by implementing soil mechanics and further study of excavator dynamics together.

  • MEMS technology is proven to be an enabling technology to realize many components for optical networking applications. Due to its widespread applications, VOA has been one of the most attractive MEMS based key devices in optical communication market. Micromachined shutters and refractive mirrors on top of silicon substrate or on the device layer of SOI (Silicon-on-insulator) substrate are the approaches trapped tremendous research activities, because such approaches enable easier alignment and assembly works. These groups of devices are known as the planar VOAs, or two-dimensional (2-D) VOAs. In this review article, we conduct the comprehensively literature survey with respect to MEMS based planar VOA devices. Apparently MEMS VOA technology is still evolving into a mature technology. MEMS VOA technology is not only the cornerstone to support the future optical communication technology, but the best example for understanding the evolution of optical MEMS technology.

  • Low temperature thermal desorption (LTTD) has become one of the cornerstone technologies used for the treatment of contaminated soils and sediments in the United States. LTTD technology was first used in the mid-1980s for soil treatment on sites managed under the Comprehensive Environmental Respones, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) or Superfund. Implementation was facilitated by CERCLA regulations that require only that spplicable regulations shall be met thus avoiding the need for protracted and expensive permit applications for thermal treatment equipment. The initial equipment designs used typically came from technology transfer sources. Asphalt manufacturing plants were converted to direct-fired LTTD systems, and conventional calciners were adapted for use as indirect-fired LTTD systems. Other innovative designs included hot sand recycle technology (initially developed for synfuels production from tar sand and oil shale), recycle sweep gas, travelling belts and batch-charged vacuum chambers, among others. These systems were used to treat soil contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxin with varying degrees of success. Ultimately, performance and cost considerations established the suite of systems that are used for LTTD soil treatment applications today. This paper briefly reviews the develpoment of LTTD systems and summarizes the design, performance and cost characteristics of the equipment in use today. Designs reviewed include continuous feed direct-fired and indirect-fired equipment, batch feed systems and in-situ equipment. Performance is compared in terms of before-and-after contaminant levels in the soil and permissible emissions levels in the stack gas vented to the atmosphere. The review of air emissions standards includes a review of regulations in the U.S. and the European Union (EU). Key cost centers for the mobilization and operation of LTTD equipment are identified and compared for the different types of LTTD systems in use today. A work chart is provided for the selection of the optmum LTTD system for site-specific applications. LTTD technology continues to be a cornerstone technology for soil treatment in the U.S. and elsewhere. Examples of leading-edge LTTD technologies developed in the U.S. that are now being delivered locally in global projects are described.

  • With the rapid changes of business environments and the tremendous amount of information generated from those environments, most companies must learn to manage those changes and information more effectively. Furthermore, within those amounts of information, the information that meets with achieving the goal of each company should be selected and managed as a core competency, i.e. the knowledge, visible and invisible assets of the company. Knowledge management, as a tool of creating, sharing, and applying such knowledge, has pursued those requirements of companies and been studied by many researchers and consultants, especially focusing on the Knowledge Map'. It is said that a knowledge map is a powerful tool for scanning and managing the knowledge that exists in a company and that it is the most important part of establishing a knowledge management base. Until now, however, there have been no specific or practical models for establishing a knowledge map, in spite of the concern. For this reason, this paper suggests a practical model for establishing a knowledge map in terms of a knowledge acquisition procedure based on the traditional research concerning concept maps. In addition to this, for examining the validity of the model, a case study on the 'P' steel and iron company has been performed. This paper's methodology on developing a knowledge map and the procedures to apply them to the real business environment will suggest a cornerstone in the field of practical implementation of knowledge management.
