  • Cost reduction requires lowering number of power devices used in the converter driving SRM. This is quite feasible in SRM drive systems than in other drive systems. This paper deals with design, analysis, and simulation of such a novel two phase SRM. A novel two phase SRM has high performance, self-starting capability, high efficiency, and low manufacturing cost. Additionally, the stator back iron does not experience any flux reversal as the flux is in the same direction whether phase A or B is excited leading to a greater reduction in core losses. The magnetic analysis and design considerations of the novel two phase SRM have been obtained by the finite element analysis (FEM). Experimental verification of the machine design is provided to correlate with analysis and simulation studies.

  • Two-phase simultaneous excitation mode of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) has been shown to effectively improve the average torque output compared with traditional single-phase excitation mode. But the torque ripple of the two-phase excitation SRM with traditional winding distribution increases because of the inconsistent electromagnetic field. To reduce the torque ripple, a two-phase excitation 8/6 SRM with novel winding distribution is proposed in this paper. The static torques generated by various magnetic circuits are analyzed and obtained to verify the torque increase. Then the electromagnetic characteristics of the proposed SRM are investigated by the numerical calculation method in detail, including flux linkage, inductance, and torque. Finally, an experiment for measuring the SRM static electromagnetic characteristics and dynamic performance is designed and performed based on the novel mode, and the comparing results show that the proposed two-phase SRM is effective.

  • Design and analysis of a novel 2-phase 4/5 Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) is presented. The proposed motor employs a novel stator pole configuration. A novel SRM employs four-rotor and five-stator poles. The motor has no dead-zone and can be operate at any rotor position. The structure and operating principle are also described. The comparison between the proposed motor and a conventional two-phase 4/2 SRM is undertaken in this analysis. Furthermore, the Finite Element Analysis(FEA) and matlab-simulink are used to predict and simulate the performance of a proposed motor. The results of investigation indicate that the proposed structure offers a better performance in term of torque production.

  • This study presents a novel twophase eight stator poles and six rotor poles (8/6) switched reluctance machine (SRM) that can compensate for the vibration and noise problems of twophase 6/3 SRM and compare the characteristics of two SRMs. In the case of twophase 6/3 SRM, the short flux path and the flux direction inside the stator are not reversed, so they have high efficiency characteristics. However, the use of three rotor poles causes problems of vibration and noise because the radial force applied to the rotor poles is not balance. The proposed twophase 8/6 SRM has advantages of 6/3 SRM such as the fluxreversalfree stator and it can improve vibration and noise by using six rotor poles due to balanced radial force acting on the rotor poles. In order to make a reasonable comparison between two SRMs, the electromagnetic field structure of 8/6 SRM is designed to have equivalent torque characteristic to 6/3 SRM and then the copper loss and core loss are compared and analyzed. Finally, we compare the effieicney of two SRMs using finite element analysis and compare the distribution of radial force acting on the rotor poles based on Maxwell's stress method.

  • SRM drive systems are designed to meet operating standards such as low cost, constant torque independent of rotor position, a desired operating speed range, high efficiency, and high performance. In applications using small motors, low cost and high performance with self-starting capabilities are highly desired. This paper discusses a novel two phase SRM (TPSRM) that has high performance characteristics with self-starting capability, low manufacturing cost with a two phase inverter and simple magnetic structure, and high efficiency. The principle of operation, analysis, and simulation for design are presented. The machine design is verified using finite element analysis (FEA) software. Analysis and simulation results are given to validate the TPSRM design.

  • A new excitation method of switched reluctance motor drive is described in this paper. This excitation method produces reluctance torque by mutual action between two phases as well as conventional self reluctance torque due to two phase excitation at a time. In other words, the change of self inductance and mutual inductance are used to produce torque. This paper suggests the operational principle, the mechanism of torque product of switched reluctance motor with two phase excitation. The acoustic noise characteristics of two phase excitation method are described against that of conventional excitation method. The energy conversion ratio is increased because the next phase is excited following one phase excited at the two phase excitation method. Acoustic noise is lower than that of conventional SRM because one of the next two phase is excited already when torque develope.

  • A novel kind of switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path is proposed in this paper. Phase excitation in the SRM gives short flux paths, hence reducing the magnetomotive force required to drive the machine, resulting in significant reduction of copper wire and core losses compared to the typical SRM with diametric circulation of magnetic flux. To verify the performance, the characteristics analysis of a double stator SRM, a 6/5 SRM with C-core structure and a 4/5 two-phase SRM which all composed of short flux path and a comparison with conventional SR motors are executed.

  • This paper proposes two SRM driving systems using a variable dc-link voltage controlled by a single-phase inverter. Two SRM converter topologies of a half bridge type and a full bridge type are proposed according to the power circuits of an inverter. The phase current can be controlled by means of a PWM controller at the inverter, and the turn-on/off angle at the phase switches can be controlled by a position sensor at the converter in the drive system. The inverter acts as a peak-current limiter if the transient current exceeds its maximum value. SRMs using the proposed topologies maintain high efficiency due to energy regeneration after the turn-off of power switches. The operational modes of the proposed topologies are verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper presents a design and characteristics analysis of novel 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path for an air-blower application. The desired air-blower is unidirectional application, and requires a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone. In order to get a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone during phase commutation, asymmetric inductance characteristic with non-uniform air-gap is considered. The proposed motor could be started at any rotor position with high efficiency drive. The proposed 2-phase 4/3 SRM is verified by finite element method analysis.
