  • In this research, the fire mistaken dispatch records for the past 11 years have been analyzed by using a statistic technique. Fire mistaken dispatch occurred yearly average $48,371{\pm}5,763$ time at 95 % confidence level. This is 1.2 times more than the dispatch for extinguishing the fire. Fire mistaken dispatch has been increased mainly by malfunctioning alarm among other various reasons and the reason of mistaken dispatch is different depending on the population of the region. In big cities, the burning smell accounts for the most of mistaken dispatch but in rural areas, the garbage incineration is the major reason for mistaken dispatch. As a result of calculating the mean time between fire mistaken dispatches (MTBFmd) by region, MTBFmd of Daejeon is 20.61 hr/time and its reliability is 95.26 % at t=1 hr. On the other hand, the MTBFmd of Gyeonggi is 0.58 hr/time and its reliability is 17.91 % at t=1 hr.

  • Objectives : This study was peformed to identify the risk factors related to the development of hypertension in a rural area. Method : Total of 3,573 subjects in Chung-Song County were interviewed and examined in 1996. The study cohort comprised 2,580 hypertension-free subjects aged above 20. One-year follow up was completed for 1,781 subjects(69.0%) in 1997. General characteristics(age, gender, education level, economic status, marital status), the family history of hypertension, diet, alcohol, smoking, coffee, stress, past history of oral contraceptive and menopausal status in female, height, weight, waist and hip circumference, baseline blood pressure, and serum total cholesterol were considered as risk factors. Results : Multivariate analysis using logistic regression model indicated that age(RH=1.50, 95% CI; 1.15-1.96), the family history of hypertension(RR=2.11, 95% CI; 1.04-4.26), waist-hip ratio(WHR) (RR=2.09, 95%, CI; 1.15-3.79), and baseline systolic blood pressure(130-139/<120mmHg)(RR=3.34, 95% CI; 1.47-7.60) were significant risk factors associated with the development of hypertension above the borderline level in male. In female, age(RR=1.06, 95% CI; 1.03-1.09), change in menopausal status$(no{\rightarrow}yes/no{\rightarrow}no)$ (RR=3.32, 95% CI; 1.01-10.87), baseline systolic blood pressure(120-129/<120mmHg: RR=2.00, 95% CI; 1.02-3.90)(130-139/<120mmHg: RR=2.64, 95% CI; 1.34-5.20) and baseline diastolic blood pressure(85-89/<80mmHg)(RR=4.09, 95% CI; 1.86-8.96) were identified as risk factors. Conclusions : Age and high normal blood pressure were significant risk factors for the development of hypertension above the borderline level. In addition, the family history of hypertension and WHR in men, and the change of menopausal status in women might be significant risk factors in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study lies in applying generalizability theory depending on the aim of the usage of GALT to analyze the sources of error of single-facet considering item and person only and to analyze the sources of error of multi-facet considering item, person and domain. The study was conducted with 1016 students of local elementary, middle, and high schools. The 21 items of a full version were answered for 40 minute and then the 12 items of short version were sampled to analyze reliability using generalizability theory. Both the full version and the short version of the items were analyzed using Cronbach's alpha for data analysis, and we applied generalizability theory and separate $p{\times}i$ design and $p{\times}(i:h)$ design, G study and D study were performed. Results of analysis are as follows: First, the result of D study after $p{\times}I$ design both on the full version and the short version showed that in the case of the full version, the generalizability coefficient was 0.87 exceeding a normal level of 0.80, and the normal level of generalizability coefficient was achieved in 13 items as well. In case of short version, when 12 items were evaluated, generalizability coefficient was 0.77 not reaching the normal level, and the normal level was achieved in case of more than 15 items. Second, the result of D study after $p{\times}(I:H)$ design on the short version showed that once one domain consists of 2 items in 6 domains, generalizability coefficient was 0.71 which is lower than the normal level of 0.80, the normal level was achieved in more than 5 item cases.

  • The current system of making course evaluations mandatory in universities in Korea in order to supplement low participation levels is a major hindering factor for the validity of the evaluation results due to students' insincere responses. This study points out the problems in course evaluations that are in the form of surveys and instead proposes a sample course evaluation system that utilizes a sample mean to deduce a population mean, attempting to prove through simulation that this is statistically significant. Thus, small, medium, and large scale courses as well as cyber courses that were available in S University in the fall 2016 semester were set as the population, and each course's evaluation average grade was set as the population mean. Furthermore, we used the average grade and standard deviation of the same courses from the previous year in order to decide the sample number, the reliability level was set as 95%, and the margin of error was set as ${\pm}0.25$. As a result of carrying out a simulation using the data analysis tool R, all the courses (small scale, medium scale, large scale, and cyber) showed to have a reliability level close to 95% including the population mean, and consequently practicality of the representative sample course evaluation system was proven.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between individual-level social capital and depression. Methods: Data from the 2009 Community Health Survey were analyzed for this study. We used chi-square tests and hierarchical logistic regression analyses to determine the relationship between individual-level social capital and depression. The Korean version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale was used to measure depression. Results: After controlling for socio-demographic factors such as, health behavior and chronic illness morbidity, that are associated with individual-level social capital, trust and informal participation significantly affected depression. Respondents with "be trust"(0.536, 95% CI 0.419-0.685) and who participate in "informal groups"(0.657, 95% CI 0.516-0.836) had significantly lower odds ratios of depression. Conclusions: Considering and introducing measures to increase the social capital of residents, need reduce depression. It is especially necessary to enhance resident empowerment.

  • Water levels in groundwater monitoring wells of Jeju Island were analyzed using parametric and non-parametric trend analyses. Number of used monitoring wells in the analysis are 94 among totally 106 monitoring wells and the monitoring period is greater than single year, from 2001 to 2009. For the trend analysis, both parametric (linear regression) and nonparametric (Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's trend test) methods were adopted. Results of the linear regression analysis on daily basis indicated that about 58.5% of the monitoring wells showed a decreasing trend, and analysis using monthly median indicated that about 79.8% showed a decreasing trend. The Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's trend test with monthly median values in confidence levels of 95% and 99% showed the same analysis results. In confidence level of 95%, 32% were decreased, 3% were increased and the remains showed no trend. However, in confidence level of 99%, 16% were decreased, 2% were increased and the remains showed no trend. The largest decline rates of water levels were detected mainly at the coast of the northwestern and southwestern parts, which is expected to closely related to the increased pumping in the urban area and tourist resort.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the level urine cotinine and periodontal diseases in Korea adults. The date from the 2014, 2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used, and 5,146 subjects over 30 years were included in the analysis. Periodontal disease was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index. Binary logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals. There was a 2.08-fold (95% CI; 1.73-2.05) increased in the odds of periodontal disease for those with any ETS exposure compared with those with non-smokers following adjustment for sex, age, education, and income. The level of urine cotinine also showed a dose-dependent increase in extent of periodontal disease. Among persons in the Korea who had never used tobacco, those exposed to ETS were more likely to have periodontal disease than were those not exposed to ETS. In the future, voluntary compliance of smokers to measures to reduce ETS exposure should be encouraged.
