  • Objective : This is a cadaver study to assess the accuracy of three cervical screw insertion techniques; the blind technique [Group I], the laminotomy technique [Group II], and the funnel technique [Group III]. Methods : Ten human cadavers embalmed with formaldehyde were prepared. After exposing the spinous processes, the laminas and the lateral masses, titanium alloy transpedicular screws were inserted from C3 to C7. A total of 100 pedicles were ramdomly assigned to one of three techniques [the blind technique : 31 screws, the laminotomy technique : 51 screws, the funnel technique: 18 screws]. Axial computed tomography with 1-mm slices, and sagittal and coronal reformation were performed to identify the accuracy of the screw insertion and the anatomic relationships. Results : In Group I, 9 screws [29%] were either contained within or penetrated less than 1mm, which were rated as successful. In Group II, 24 screws [47%] were successful. In Group III, 16 screws [89%] were successful. In the multiple comparison, there was a statistically significant difference between Groups I and III and between Groups II and III [$X^2$ test and Bonfenoni test]. Conclusion : The funnel technique can help a surgeon's understanding about the cervical pedicle more precisely than the other two techniques. The funnel technique is less dependent on lateral soft tissue retraction state.

  • This is an experimental study on the structural characteristics of reinforced concrete beams using of the oyster shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete. In this study, the main factors consist of the grain sizes and the percentage of substitution of oyster shells to fine aggregate in the equal water cement ratio. The results of the study showed as followed. The initial load value of them represented similar constant within 10% of the maximum load value in each test beam. But the maximum load value and the ultimate load value decreased with increased grain size and the rate of substitution. As the grain size of oyster shells became smaller, the load values of them were somewhat higher. The deflection among deformation properties of reinforced concrete beams with oyster shells represented typical curves like that of normal reinforced concrete. In the deformation of steel and concrete, the deformation was proportionated to the load till yield point and from yield point until approaching the ultimate load point. One type was typical curve of the load and the deformation and the other type irregularly was changed to very small deformation for the load increase centering around load axis. After the analyzing structural behaviors and the properties of reinforced concrete test beams with oyster shells, the most excellent grain size of oyster shells represented 1.0mm and less or 5.0mm and less with taking uniformly, and the percentage of practicable substitution of them to fine aggregate was about 30%.

  • In this study, we estimated the tropospheric delay of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signals during passing through the atmosphere in relation to weather and seasonal factors. For this purpose, we chose four CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Station) stations from inland (CCHJ and PYCH) and on the coast (GEOM and CHJU). A total of 48 days for each station (one set of data for each week) were downloaded from the NGII (National Geographic Information Institute) and processed it using the scientific GNSS software. The average tropospheric delays in winter are less than 2,400 mm, which is about 200 mm less than those in summer. The estimated tropospheric delay shows a similar pattern from all stations except the absolute bias in magnitude, while a large delay was observed for the station located on the coast. In addition, the delay during the day was relatively stable in winter, and the average tropospheric delay was strongly related to the orthometric height. The inland stations have tropospheric delays by the precipitation rather than humidity due to dry weather and difference in temperature. On the contrary, it was primarily caused by the humidity on the sea. The correlation between temperature and water vapor pressure is 0.9 or larger for all stations, and the tropospheric delay showed a high linear relationship with temperature. It is necessary to analyze the GNSS data with higher temporal resolution (e.g. all RINEX data of the year) to improve the stability and reliability of the correlation results.

  • Two hundred one patients of ventricular septal defect, which were operated at Seoul National University Hospital, were analysed on clinical background during the period from January, 1975 to December, 1980. The results were as follows: 1. Of the 201 patients, 118 patients were male [58.7%] and 83 patients were female [41.3%]. Their age ranged from 15 months to 40 years, and the mean age was 8.7 years. 40% of the patients were between 4 and 8 years. 2. The most common symptoms showed frequent U RI and exertional dyspnea. 3. On Kirklin`s anatomical classification, type I constituted 26.9%, type II 58.2%, type III 12.4%, and type IV 1.0%. We showed marked increased incidence of type I VSD as compared to Caucasians* 4. 46 cases were associated with other congenital cardiac diseases. They were PDA [13 cases], AI[11 ], ASD[6], PS[10], MI[4], and Double aortic arch [1]. 5. In 128 patients, who had complete hemodynamic data and were not associated with other congenital cardiac diseases, an attempt was made to correlate the EKG findings with the hemodynamic data, and defect size with the hemodynamic data. The children had variable distribution of PA syst. pr. and Rp/Rs. But most of adults had $R_P$/$R_S$of 0.15 or less. As $P_P$/$P_S$increased, the rate of operative complication increased also. 6. When a normal EKG pattern was present, $Q_P$/$Q_S$and $R_P$/$R_S$and $P_P$/$P_S$were relatively low. When EKG findings were LVH pattern, there was diastolic volume overload to left ventricle. As RVH, there was systolic pressure overload to right ventricle. And as BVH, there was mixed pattern of diastolic volume overload to left ventricle and systolic pressure overload to right ventricle. 7. Among patients in defect was less than 1 $cm^2$ per $M^2$ of BSA, $Q_P$/$Q_S$was less than 2:1, and $R_P$/$R_S$less than 0.25, and PAsyst. pr. less than 50 mmHg, and $P_P$/$P_S$was less than 0.5. But patients with the defect greater than 1 $cm^2$ per $M^2$ of BSA had no correlationship between $Q_P$/$Q_S$, $R_P$/$R_S$, PAsyst. pr. and defect size in each other. Most of patients with the defect greater than 2 $cm^2$/$M^2$ BSA, $R_P$/$R_S$was greater than 0.5. 8. Operative mortality rate was 9.5% [19 cases] among 201 patients. And complication rate including mortality rate was 22.9% [46 cases].

  • The flaws detected by the non-destructive surface test methods shall be sized by means of the volumetric test such as an UT(ultrasonic test) or an ECT(eddy current test) for the purpose of analyzing and repairing them. It is generally known that the ECT is a comparatively effective technique for the small size cracks which are located shallowly from the surface. On this study, the ECT technique was tried to size the depth of the crack-like EDM notches, and it is identified that the ECT is an appropriate depth sizing technique for the shallow cracks less than 3mm in the Martensitic CA6NM material.

  • This paper presents the physiological signal processing CMOS one chip for transmitting human bodys small electrical signals such as electrocardiogram(EKG) or electromyogram(EMG) and the external system for receiving signals was implemented by the commercial ICs. For simultaneous four-subject four-channel telemetry, a new enfored synchronization techniqeu using infrared bi-directional communication has been proposed. The telemeter IC with the size of 5.1*5.1mm$^{2}$ has the following functions: receiving of command signal, initialization of internal state of all functional blocks, decoding of subject-selection signal, time multiplexing of 4-channel modulated physiological signals, transmitting of telemetry signal to external system and auto power down control. The newly designed synchronized oscillator with low supply voltage dependence in the telemeter IC operates at a supply voltage from 4.6~6.0V and the nonlinearity error of PIM modulator was less than 1.2%F.S(full scale). The power saving block operates at the period of 2.5ms even if the telemetry IC does not receive command signal from external system for a constant time.

  • Most of the measurement and the evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration have been performed by using a small size single axis accelerometer between the handle and the hand palm or a three axis accelerometer attached on an adapter outside the hand(indirect measurement). It is most desirable for the correct evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration form the power tool handle to measure the acceleration between the handle surface and the hand palm in the three axis(direct measurement) as recommended in ISO 5349-1. In the study three axes acceleration measurement device was developed of which the thickness was less than 7mm so that it can be placed between the handle and the palm without any inconvenience during the measurement. To verify the performance of the developed device, measured acceleration by the two methods, direct and indirect, were compared in the study.

  • Basalt originates from volcanic magma and flood volcanoes, a very hot fluid or semifluid material under the earth's crust, solidified in the open air. Basalt is a common term used for a variety of volcanic rocks, which are gray, dark in colour, formed from the molten lava after solidification. Recently, attention has been devoted to continuous basalt fibers (CBF) whose primary advantage consists in their low cost, good resistance to acids and solvents, and good thermal stability. In order to investigate reinforcement effect, this paper did FEM analysis with shell element. The result were as follows; BCF deck plate did elastic behavior to 450 kN, reinforcement effect of basalt fiber (BF) was less. But BCF's perpendicular deflection occurred little about 23 mm comparing with RC deck plate in load 627 kN. Stiffness was very improved by basalt fiber reinforcement.

  • Removal characteristics of lead-contaminated soil at the military shooting range located in the Changwon city were studied experimentally using soil washing process. As a washing solution, hydrogen chloride (HCl) concentrations of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 0.2 N were used, and soil : solution ratios were 1 : 2, 1 : 3, 1 : 4, and 1 : 5. Particle diameter of contaminated soil of 4-0.075 mm, and washing period of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 60, and 120 min were used as operating parameters. The optimum concentration of HCl solution was 0.1 N (56.3% of Pb removal efficiency) with 15 minutes operation period in views of economics, and the optimum soil : solution ratio was determined as 1 g : 3 mL for 69.7% of Pb removal efficiency with 0.1 N HCl and 15 minutes washing period. As washing period increased, removal efficiency was increased until 20 min of the removal efficiency of 75.3%, and then almost stable. Pb removal efficiency in soil particle diameters of 0.075 mm or more was ranged from 77.0% to 82.0%, but it was decreased to 52.8% in diameter of less than 0.075 mm. Therefore, the optimum cut-off size of the soil particle diameter was found less than 0.075 mm. Combined HCl solution and ultrasonic washing method showed better removal efficiency compared to only water or HCl washing method for particle sizes above 0.075 mm.

  • Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparison analysis were performed for shear strengths categorized by breccia content of 5 wt.% (Case-I), 10 wt.%, (Case-II) and 15 wt.% (Case-III) in fault cores. The relationship between breccia contetnt and shear strength was quantitatively classified by calculating the mean and standard deviation of shear strength for each population in each case and then the grouping the breccia contents that had a statistically similar effect on the dispersion of shear strength. As a result, shear strength was clearly classified into group 1 (breccia content of 0-15 wt.%) and group 2 and 3 (breccia coantent of 15-30 wt.% and 30 wt.% or more) in Case-III. Shear strength of the standard line at breccia content of 15 wt.% were determined to be 43.6 kPa, 77.6 kPa, and 118.6 kPa at each normal stress (54 kPa, 108 kPa, and 162 kPa), respectively. In addition, the distribution range of cohesions is 0-43.6 kPa at breccia content of 15 wt.% or less, and 0-70.0 kPa at 15 wt.% or more. Distribution range of friction angles is 0-45.7 ° at breccia content of 15 wt.% or less, and 16.7-57.5 ° at 15 wt.% or more.
