  • Coinjection of alcohol and air or alcohol flooding only were evaluated with 3-D soil tank for removal of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminant from soil. 70%-ethanol and 40%-isopropanol were used for non-NAPL-swelling alcohol and NAPL-swelling alcohol, respectively. 729 ml-benzene was placed in the 37 liter soil tank. Alcohols were respectively injected from the injection well placed near the bottom of the tank and mobilized free phase NAPL and aqueous phases were then recovered from the extraction well placed in the upper part of the soil tank. Approximately 50% of removed NAPLs were free-phase in all experiments. The results were completely different to the previous soil column experiment results and also implied that alcohol properties did not affect the NAPL removal efficiency in the 3-D soil tank experiment. Air was also co-injected with alcohol to evaluate co-injection effects on NAPL removal. Enhanced NAPL removal effect of co-injection of 70%-ethanol and air was also found even in the 3-D soil tank evaluation. However, co-injection effect of 40%-iso-propanol and air was less apparent. This study determined that the most important parameter governing alcohol flooding for NAPL removal would be extraction capacity to recover NAPL and aqueous phase flowing in the soil. More researches are required for improving recovery efficiency of extraction well in real soil contamination conditions.

  • The structural transition of silk protein has been induced by various method including alcohol treatment. To know the effect of alcohol concentration on silk beads conformation, silk beads were prepared in different alcohol concentration (100%, 70%, and 50%) and then examined the infrared spectra of silk beads. Silk beads prepared in 100% alcohol showed at $1265cm^{-1}$ attributed ${\beta}-sheet$ conformation and did not showed a characteristic absorption peak from model drug. However, silk beads in 70% and 50% alcohol showed some peaks originated from model drug including $2933cm^{-1}$, $1069cm^{-1}$, and $973cm^{-1}$. These results means that the micro-environment of silk beads was affected by alcohol concentration.

  • Propolis was extracted using various concentrations of ethanol at different solvent-sample ratios. Volatile flavor components of propolis were detected by GC/MS, and the principal components were analysed. The content of total flavonoids (TF) in propolis extract increased 2 to 14% with increasing concentration of ethanol in the extraction solvent from 20 to 50%, but deceased slightly between of 60 and 70%. The 70% ethanol extract of propolis had the strongest antimicrobial activities to E. coli, L. plantarum and S. cerevisiae. Propolis ethanol extracts (2 to 14%) showed higher antioxidative activities when added oil to soybean oil during storage at $37^{\circ}C$.

  • Purpose : Despite of development of neonatal intensive care, infections, especially catheter-related infection, have been a major problem in newborns on intensive care. Catheter-related infection is closely related to skin colonization so that skin disinfection is crucial to protect newborns from the infection. Cotton balls of seventy percent alcohol made by hospital frequently open to air so that composition of alcohol may be easily evaporated. We hypothesized that 10% povidone would have better disinfection compared to 70% alcohol and normal saline. Methods : The effect of skin disinfection was evaluated in newborn infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit(NICU) of Hanyang University Kuri Hospital by a skin swab culture before and after disinfectant exposure. Before skin disinfective preparation, the peripheral intravenous catheter insertion sites were swabbed for culture with sterile cotton moistened with normal saline. Cotton balls of 70% alcohol(Alcohol group, n=20) or 10% povidone and 70% alcohol(povidone group, n=20) were randomly selected. Normal saline swabs were used for controls(n=10). After swabbing, the skin swab culture was done on same sites with same procedure. Results : Before skin disinfection, culture-positivity was shown in 9 of 20 leases of alcohol and povidone groups, respectively and in 8 of 10 cases of the controls. After skin disinfection, culture-positivity was still shown in 3 of 9 cases of the Alcohol group, in 2 of 9 of the Povidone group, and in 6 of 8 cases of the controls. Disinfective effect was significantly different among the 3 groups(p=0.0387). The povidone group had significantly better disinfection than the controls(p=0.0156), but the alcohol group was not significantly different from the controls. Conclusion : The cotton balls of povidone had similar effect of disinfection compared to those of alcohol, but better disinfection than the controls. A disinfective effect of the cotton balls of alcohol was not, however, significantly different from the controls. We suggest that purity of alcohol, quality control of cotton balls of alcohol, and disinfection method should be reevaluated.

  • There is literature addressing to cultural aspects of alcohol and alcoholism. However, scholars have paid little attention to study what will happen to alcohol consumption behavior and alcoholism if there is a national government cultural intervention, so that the alcohol drinking culture would change in association with the change of internal institution in a society. This work attempted to study this research question. For this purpose, I selected Mongolia as a research case and examined survey data, statistical data, and data from research-based resources, referring to the last 70 years profile of Mongolian alcohol per capital consumption and alcoholism as well as studying Mongolian historical sources for measuring Mongolian traditional alcohol drinking customs. The data I gathered and observed during this research proved that there is a huge difference between the current drinking culture among younger generation and Mongolian traditional cultural context that was respected and strictly followed by their ancestors. Findings suggest that there has been a parallel increase between the change of alcohol drinking culture and alcohol consumption in connection with the modernization.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the variability of the blood.breath ratio (BBR) value and to rationalize the determination of ethanol in breath for evidential sobriety testing. In the experiment forty eight healthy persons, 24 men and 24 women, took part. The experiment included the experimental condition such as sex(2),the type of alcoholic beverage(2; soju, whisky), the type of food(2;kimchi stew, pork belly) and the amount of ethanol consumed(2; 0.35g/kg, 0.70g/kg, based on body weight ) according to 24 factorial design by orthogonal arrays. Breath and blood sample were taken each 8 times and 5 times after the end of drinking. The blood and breath alcohol measurements were highly correlated (r = 0.973). The Results of four way analyses of variance revealed a significant 'the type of food' effect for maximum BrAC (F (1, 43) =5.1, pp<.029), but no significant effect in the type of alcoholic beverage and sex. The overall blood/breath ratio (${\pm}$ SD) was 2295${\pm}$403 and the 95% confidence interval were 1489 and 3101. In spite of these variations, at this time, it seems to be reasonable that apply 2100:1 conversion factor to breathalyzers, because most of the subjects showed the blood.breath ratio of over 2100:1 at least 30 minutes or more passed from the time of drinking as shown in this study.

  • There is an increasing trend to alcoholics patients due to social factors of the aftereffect of the recession in Korea. Accordingly, study of the impact on society as well as alcoholism impact on individuals is becoming active. To solve the problem of addiction, we needed an integrated management system because the evils of alcoholism and addiction caused by a variety of social, economic and cultural factors. However, alcoholism research investment is less than the health problems like drugs, gambling, internet and we also did not provide proper treatment services for alcohol addiction. In this study, we will develop a customized smart phone application then the patient can acts for the individual circumstances by providing the aggregated information relates to treatment.
