  • Corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives, N-Cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (CBTS), N,N'-Dicyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (DCBS), N-tert-Butylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TBBS), N-tert-Amylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (TABS), and N-Oxydiethylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide (OBTS) was investigated by potentiostatic anodic and cathodic polarization (Tafel plot), DC polarization resistance, and AC impedance measurements. The corrosion current densities and rates are 1.236 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 0.655 MPY for CBTS; 1.881 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 0.988 MPY for DCBS; 2.367 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and 1.257 MPY for TBBS; 3.398 ${\mu}A /cm^2$ and 1.809 MPY for TABS, respectively. OBTS among derivatives under study shows the lowest corrosion density (0.546 ${\mu}A /cm^2$) and the slowest corrosion rate (0.288 MPY). Also, the charge transfer resistances and the double layer capacitances are 275.21 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 7.0 ${\mu}F{cdot}cm^{-2}$ for CBTS; 14.24 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for DCBS; 54.15 $k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 26 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TBBS; 0.96$k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and 83 ${\mu}F{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ for TABS, respectively. The weaker the electron donating inductive effect of derivatives is and the smaller the effect of steric hindrance is, the more the corrosion of brass coated steel cords in the acetonitrile solution of sulfenamide derivatives is prevented. The above results agree with that observed in the field of tire industry.

  • Anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid (GC) derivatives have been clinically used in immune-malfunctional diseases for their immunosuppressive activity. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the relationship between anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities. In order to compare immunosuppressive activities with the known anti-inflammatory activities of the GC derivatives, eight clinically used GC derivatives including hydrocortisone, prednislone, 6$\alpha$-methyl prednisolone, triamcinolone, dexamethasone, betamethasone, triamcinolone acetonide and fluocinolone acetonide were selected, and lymphoblastosis inhibition and plaque-forming cell (PFC) response in mice were studied as immunological parameters. In Con A-induced lymphoblatosis inhibition invitro, all derivatives showed potent inhibition $IC_{50}$ values of the derivaties except methyl prednisolone and triamcinolone were less than $10^{-7}$M and good dose dependency was obtained. This result was well correlated with that of their anti-inflammatory potencies obtained. This result was well correlated with that of their anti-inflammatory potencies and their receptor binding affinities. However, in PFC response, consistent result were not obtained. Total numbers of PFCs per spleen were decreased by some derivatives, but numbers of PFCs per $10^6$ cells were not decreased by systemic administration of but numbers of PFCs per $10^6$ cells were not decreased by systemic administration of GC at the dose of 0.05 mg/mouse. Furthermore, at the dose of 0.1 mg/mouse, numbers of PFCs per $10^6$ cells were found to be increased, although total PFCs per spleen were decreased.

  • A series of 6-(N-arylamino)-7-alkylthio-5,8-quinolinedione derivatives(SQ1-12) were newly synthesized for the evaluation of antifungal activities. 6-(N-Arylamino)-7-chloro-5,8-quinolinediones (RCKs) were treated with Na$_2$S/(CH$_3$)$_2$SO$_2$ in EtOH In give SQs. RCKs were prepared by regioselective nucleophilic substitution of 6,7-dichloro-5,8-quinolinediones with arylamines. In the presence of CeCl$_3$, the N-arylamino groups were introduced at the 6-position of 5,8-quinolinedione ring by the regioselective substitution. These derivatives 1-12 were tested for antifungal and also antibacterial activities, in vitro, against Candida sp., Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The MIC values were determined by the two-fold dilution method.

  • 2-Arylidenehydrazinyl-4-arylthiazole derivatives (9a-f) were prepared by the in situ formation of ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin complex of 2,4'-dibromoacetophenone (8) in water followed by the addition of arylidenethiosemicarbazones (7a-f) in 70~88% yield. The structures of the compounds 9a-f were elucidated by IR and $^1H-NMR$ spectral data. The role of ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin appears to activate the compound 7 and 8 and promote the reaction to complete in reduced reaction time.

  • A series of N-benzoylated ligands incorporating three different benzoyl groups 2,2'-(benzoyliminodiethylene)-4-substituted phenols ($L^{1,4,7}$), 2,2'-(4-nitrobenzoyliminodiethylene)-4-substituted phenols ($L^{2,5,8}$) and 2,2'-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyliminodiethylene)-4-substituted phenols ($L^{3,6,9}$) were synthesized and characterized by IR, $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR and mass spectroscopy. The In vitro antibacterial activity of investigated ligands were tested against human pathogenic bacteria such as four Gram (-) Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholera, Vibrio harveyi and two Gram (+) Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans. Furthermore, docking studies were undertaken to gain insight into the possible binding mode of these compounds with the binding site of the topoisomerase II (PDB: 4FM9) enzyme which is involved in DNA superhelicity and chromosome seggregation. The N-benzoylated derivatives $L^{5,7,8}$ have significant anticancer activity as Topoisomerase inhibitors. The ligands $L^5$ and $L^8$ were tested for their anticancer activity against human liver adenocarcinoma (HepG2) cell line with the MTT assay.
