The purpose of this study was to provide basic information for breeding cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata L.) by investigating the crop characteristics of 245 accessions of cowpea collected in Korea and abroad. All specimens flowered within 41 to 50 days (51.5%) or 51 to 60 days (43.7%) of sowing and matured 21 to 30 days (53.9%) or 31 to 40 days (23.7%) from flowering. Thus, the total time from sowing to maturity was either 71 to 80 days (26.9%) or 81 to 90 days (23.4%) for all specimens. The accessions were classified into indeterminate type (72.7%), intermediate type (25.7%) and determinate type (1.6%) based on growth; prostrate type (78.8%) and erect type (21.2%) based on plant type; heart shape (98.4%) and lanceolate (1.6%) based on leaflet shape; and purple (85.2%), white (13.6%) and light green (1.2%) based on corolla color. The accessions were classified into brown (54.7%) and yellowish brown (37.6%) based on color at pod maturity; and downward (90.6%), middle (5.7%) and standing upright (3.7%) based on pod setting position. Seed coat color varied as 25.3% were brown, 23.3% were black, and 20.8% were white. Seed shape also varied as 66.9% were egg-shaped, 24.9% were rectangular and 8.2% were kidney-shaped. Pod lengths ranged from 10.1-20.0 cm and from 20.1-30.0 cm in 89.0% and 8.6% of specimens, respectively. There were 12.1-15.0, 9.1-12.0, and 15.1-18.0 seeds per pod in 62.0%, 25.7% and 9.1% of specimens, respectively. The weight of one hundred seeds ranged from 15.1-20.0 g (37.6%) and 10.1-15.0 g (28.6%). Seed yields per plant were 100.1-200.0 g (52.7%), less than 100 g (22.9%), and 200.1-300.0 g (15.9%). The starch content in the seeds of the seven selected resources ranged from 44.1 to 57.0% while the protein content ranged from 23.3 to 27.5% with significant differences. The sucrose content ranged from 1.46 to 2.03%, also with significant differences.
The karyotypes of three species of Gobiobotia in Korea were investigated: G. macrocephala, G. brevibarba, and G. nakdongensis. In these species, the mitotic chromosomes from 25 groups with two chromosomes each indicated that it is a diploid. The karyotypes of Gobiobotia macrocephala are 2n = 50 (9M+7SM+9ST) with NF = 100, G. brevibarba 2n = 50 (10M+7SM+4ST+4T) with NF = 92, and G. nakdongensis 2n = 50 (5M+9SM+9ST+2T) with NF = 96. Chromosome sizes ranged from 3.3 to $7.5{\mu}m$, 2.7 to $6.3{\mu}m$ and 3.5 to $7.3{\mu}m$ in length, respectively. This is the first report on the chromosomes of G. macrocephala and G. nakdongensis.
The purpose of this study is to determine the changes of ultrasonographic appearance of stomach, pylorus and duodenum in relation to food intake and administration of contrast medium in dogs. Ultrasonograms were obtained with 5.0MHz sector transducer. After placing the dogs in dorsal recumbency, scanning was performed at the 8th intercostal space. The mean inner diameter of stomach immediately after food intake, 2, 4 and 6 hours was 47.9, 51.5, 46.8 and 40.6mm, respectively. The diameter of pylorus immediately after food intake, 2, 4 and 6 hours was 7.4, 9.7, 8.9 and 6.0mm, respectively(p<0.01). The diameter of duodenum immediately after food intake 2, 4 and 6 hours was 12.5, 7.9, 11.9 and 11.8mm, respectively(p<0.01). Before administration of contrast medium, the mean inner diameter of stomach, pylorus and duodenum was 38.6, 7.2 and 9.5mm, respectively. After administration of contrast medium, the diameters of stomach, pylorus and duodenum was 42.8, 7.7 and 9.9mm, respectively. It may be concluded that the ultrasonographic values determined in this study can be used as references for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease in dogs.

$C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ was synthesized by reacting $C_9H_7NH$ with chromium (VI) trioxide. The structure of the product was characterized by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol by $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with increasing dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}$) in the following order: DMF (N,N'-dimethylformamide) > acetone > chloroform > cyclohexane. The oxidation of alcohols was examined by $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ in DMF. As a result, $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ was found to be an efficient oxidizing agent that converts benzyl alcohol, allyl alcohol, primary alcohols, and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones (75%-95%). The selective oxidation of alcohols was also examined by $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ in DMF. $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ was the selective oxidizing agent of benzyl, allyl and primary alcohol in the presence of secondary ones. In the presence of DMF with an acidic catalyst, such as $H_2SO_4$, $C_9H_7NHCrO_3Cl$ oxidized benzyl alcohol (H) and its derivatives ($p-OCH_3$, $m-CH_3$, $m-OCH_3$, m-Cl, and $m-NO_2$). Electron donating substituents accelerated the reaction rate, whereas electron acceptor groups retarded the reaction rate. The Hammett reaction constant (${\rho}$) was -0.69 (308K). The observed experimental data were used to rationalize hydride ion transfer in the rate-determining step.
In a period from Sep 1994 to Sep 1996, 38 patients were treated for spontaneous pneumothorax by video-assisted thoracic surgery(VATS). 31 male and 7 female patients with ages between 17 and 79(mean 30.0 years). No death occured. The postoperative complication rate of VATS was 7.9%(3/38). We noted no recurrence of pneumothorax, 3 wound dehiscence, 3 persistent air leak(>7days) in the patients. We compared theses results with thoracoscopic surgery of spontaneous pneumothorax in 38 cases(Group A), with cases of 21 patients(Group B) performed by the thoracotomy in the same period. There have been no recurrence in groud A, and one recurrence in group B at a median follow-up of 14.37$\pm$7.48 months and 16.81 $\pm$7.12 months, respectively. There was no significant difference in the duration of operation time including induction time between VATS and thoracotomy, but postoperative hospital stay and chest tube drainage periods were all less for these undergone VATS. Postoperative complication was less in group A(3/38=7.9%, 3 cases with persistent air leak >7days, all developed wound dehiscence, too), than in group B(9/21=42.9%, 8 cases with persistent air leak more than 7days, including 2 wound dehiscence, one recurrence, and the other one case of empyema). In our experience, VATS has the effectiveness of thoracic surgery for treating thoracic problems, has resulted in surgical intervention in spontaneous pneumothorax.

7,9-Dideoxydaunomycinone (32), a late-stage precursor of the aglycone of antitumor antibiotic daunorubicin(2a) was prepared from 3-methoxybenzoic acid(5). Thus, 3-methoxybenzoic acid was converted to 4-methoxy-3-(phenylsulfonyl)-1(3H)-isobenzofuranone(11), which furnished trimethoxynaphthoate 16 upon ring annelation developed by Hauser and Rhee. The trimethoxynaphthoate 16 upon ring annelation developed by Hauser and Rbee. The trimethoxynaphtboate 16 was then transformed into phenylsulfonylnaphthofuranone 22, which was used to make anthracenoate 24 via Michael type reaction with 7-(ethylenedioxy)-2-octenoate(23). Conversion of anthracenoate 24 to tetracyclic product 28, followed by subsequent deprotection of the methyl groups in ring-B and C furnished 7, 9-Dideoxydaunomycinone(32).
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of developmental stage and embryo age of in vitro produced bovine blastocysts after vitrification and thawing. In vitro cultured day 8 blastocysts after IVF were equilibrated 20% ethylene glycol (EG) for 3 min. and were vitrified using EFS40, which is consisted of 40% EG, 18% ficoll, 0.3M sucrose and 10% FBS added in mDPBS for 30 sec. before being plunged into $LN_2$. Also, survival in vitro was assessed by re-expansion and hatching or hatched at 24 hand 48 h postwarming, respectively. The results obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows; 1) When the embryos were cultured for 8 day after IVF, 41.0% of the cleaved embryos developed to the blastocysts (early; 7.6%, expanded; 22.9%, hatching; 4.6% and hatched; 5.9%). 2) When the embryos were exposed or vitrified to the freezing solution, the re-expansion of vitrified embryos (73.3%) was significantly lower than that of control and exposed embryos (100, 97.0%) (p<0.05). But the formation rate of hatching or hatched blastocysts of vitrified embryos (66.7, 46.7%) at 48h after thawing was similar to that of exposed embryos (66.7, 39.4%) but not control (100, 100%) (p<0.01). However, in the total cell numbers of those developed hatched blastocysts, there were not significantly different among the treatment groups. 3) When the embryo survival rates by different developmental stage were examined, the re-expansion was not different among the groups $(64.5{\sim}75.6%)$. After warming 48 h, the hatching and hatched formation of early blastocysts (25.8, 9.7%) was significantly lower than those of expanded (69.7, 39.4%) and hatching blastocysts (53.3, 43.3%) (p<0.05). 4) In addition, when the expanded blastocysts at day 7, 8 and 9 were vitrified, the re-expansion of day 8 and 9 embryos was significantly lower than that of day 7 (day 7; 93.9%, day 8; 75.8% and day 9; 87.5%) (p<0.05). However, the rates of development to hatched blastocysts were no difference among the groups (day 7; 36.4%, day 8; 36.4% and day 9; 31.3%). These results suggested that in vitro produced expanded or hatching blastocysts can be efficiently cryopreserved by the two-step vitrification method using EFS40.
New polyfluorene derivatives, poly[9,9-bis(4' n-octyloxyphenyl)] fluorene (PAPF-8) and poly[9,9-bis(4'-(2",7"-dimethylocyloxy)phenyl)] fluorene (PAPF-10) were synthesized from the monomers, 2,7-dibromo-9,9-bis[4' (2"-ethylhexyloxy)benzene] fluorene and 2,7-dibromo-9,9-bis[4' (2", 7"-dimethyloctyloxybenzene)] fluorene through the Ni(0) mediated polymerization. The copolymers were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, TGA, photoluminescence (PL) & electroluminescence (EL) spectroscopy, elementa analysis, and molecular weight studies. The synthesized POPF-8 and POPF-10 showed a pure blue emission without any spectral change upon thermal annealing and EL device operation.
Metastasis is the primary cause of from breast cancer mortality. Cell migration and invasion play important roles in neoplastic metastasis. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which degrades the extracellular matrix (ECM), plays an important role in cancer cell invasion. NF-${\kappa}B$ is transcription factor important in the regulation of MMP-9, as the promoter of MMP-9 gene contains binding sites for NF-${\kappa}B$. Brazilin, an active component of sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan), decreases TPA-induced MMP-9 expression and invasion in MCF-7 cells. Also, brazilin suppressed NF-${\kappa}B$ activation in TPA-treated MCF-7 cells. Taken together, we demonstrated that the inhibition of TPA-induced MMP-9 expression and cell invasion by brazilin is mediated by the suppression of the NF-${\kappa}B$ pathway in MCF-7 cells. This result suggest brazilin provide a potential therapeutic app roach for the treatment of breast cancer.
A new series of 7-deazapurine derivatives[7,8] as purine antagonists was prepared. Diethyl 4-cyano-N-(diphenyimethylene)-3-arylglutamate[3] were synthesized by LDA-catalyzed Michael addition of N-(diphenylrnethylene)glycine ethyl ester with (E)-2-cyano-3-arylacrylate. Deprotection yields diethyl 4-cyano-3-arylglutamate, which were easily cyclized to 4-cyano-2-ethoxycarbonyl-5-oxo-3-arylpyrrolidine[4]. The compounds[4] were treated with NaBH$_{4}$ and then with (C$_{2}$H$_{5}$)$_{3}$OBF$_{4}$ to give 4-cyano-5-ethoxy-2H-2-ethoxymethyl-3-aryl-3,4-dihydropyrrole[6], which were converted to 7-aryl-6-amino-8-ethoxymethyl-7,8-dihydro-7(3H, 9H)-deazapurine-2-thione[7] and 7-aryl-2,6-diamino-8-ethoxymethyl-7,8-dihydro-7(9H)-deazapurine[8] with possible activity against neoplastic disease.
