  • A lumped parameter model of Li-ion battery in hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) is constructed and system parameters are identified by using recursive least square estimation for different C-rates, SOCs and temperatures. The system characteristics of pole and zero in frequency domain are analyzed with the parameters obtained from different conditions. The parameterized model of Li-ion battery indicates highly dependant of temperatures. The system pole and internal resistance changes 6.6 and 18 times at $-20^{\circ}C$, comparing with those at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results will be utilized on constructing model-based state observer or an on-line identification and an adaptation of the model parameters in battery management systems for hybrid electric vehicle applications.

  • This paper presents a carrier-based pulse-width modulation(PWM) method for reducing the common-mode voltage of a three-level four-leg converter. The idea of the proposed PWM method is intuitive and easy to be implemented in digital signal processor-based converter control systems. On the basis of the analysis of space-vector PWM(SVPWM) and sinusoidal PWM(SPWM) switching patterns, the fourth leg pole voltage of the three-phase converter called "f leg pole voltage" is manipulated to reduce the common-mode voltage. To synthesize f leg pole voltage for the suppression of the common-mode voltage, positive and negative pole voltage references of f leg are calculated. An offset voltage is also deduced to prevent the distortion of a, b, and c phase voltages. The feasibility of the proposed PWM method is verified by simulation and experimental results. The common-mode voltage of the proposed PWM method in peak-to-peak value is 33% in comparison with that of the conventional SVPWM method. The transition number of the common-mode voltage is also reduced to 25%.

  • Submerged arc welding method from both sides is generally applied to the welding of main panel manufacturing process during ship construction. The tandem SAW method is applied to improve the productivity. The various weld defects that occur during tandem SAW method are melt through, incomplete penetration, undercut and overlap etc. It could be thought that the reasons for these defects are mainly lack of prediction ability for penetration depth and deposited metal area. In this research, total 5 kinds of welding factors for experiment like current of lead pole, voltage of lead pole, current of trail pole, voltage of trail pole and welding speed are adopted. Weld tests are carried out for the analysis of variation effects of these factors on penetration depth and deposited metal area. Based on the test and analysis results, it is possible to obtain the prediction equation for the effect of these factors on the amount of deposited metal and penetration depth. As per the verification of the results by additional tests, it is confirmed that the prediction equation, include a error margin of ${\pm}2mm$ for penetration depth and ${\pm}10mm2$ for deposited metal area.

  • In this study, the vibration characteristics and the resonance phenomena of a wind-solar hybrid light pole structure are compared with respect to the wind turbine type through the dynamic response measurement. Two different turbines are considered including 2-bladed and 3-bladed vertical axis wind turbine rotors. The resonance phenomenon that can occur in hybrid light pole structure is analyzed by comparing the dynamic characteristics of the structure and the excitation force under operational conditions. Displacement responses are also estimated using the acceleration measurement data by use of recently proposed method, and it is observed that the amplitude of dynamic displacement responses are in the range of 4-6 cm under the resonance in the case of 2-bladed turbine and those are limited under 2 mm in the case of 3-bladed turbine because there is no resonance.

  • An adaptive response surface method with Latin Hypercube sampling strategy is employed to optimize a magnet pole shape of large scale BLDC motor to minimize the cogging torque. The proposed algorithm consists of the multi-objective Pareto optimization and ($1+{\lambda}$) evolution strategy to find the global optimal points with relatively fewer sampling data. In the adaptive RSM, an adaptive sampling point insertion method is developed utilizing the design sensitivities computed by using finite element method to set a reasonable response surface with a relatively small number of sampling points. The developed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of PM poles for 6MW BLDC motor.

  • The superiority of gallium nitride FET (GaN FET) over silicon MOSFET is examined in this paper. One of the outstanding features of GaN FET is low reverse-recovery charge, which enables continuous conduction mode operation of totem-pole bridgeless boost power factor correction (PFC) circuit. Among many bridgeless topologies, totem-pole bridgeless shows high efficiency and low conducted electromagnetic interference performance, with low cost and simple control scheme. The operation principle, control scheme, and circuit implementation of the proposed topology are provided. The converter is driven in two-module interleaved topology to operate at a power level of 5.5 kW, whereas phase-shedding control is adopted for light load efficiency improvement. Negative bias circuit is used in gate drivers to avoid the shoot-through induced by high speed switching. The superiority of GaN FET is verified by constructing a 5.5 kW prototype of two-module interleaved totem-pole bridgeless boost PFC converter. The experiment results show the highest efficiency of 98.7% at 1.6 kW load and an efficiency of 97.7% at the rated load.

  • A paleomagnetic investigation for the Cretaceous rocks in the Buyeo and Hampyeong Basins, located out of the Gyeongsang Basin, was carried out in order to elucidate the paleomagnetic directions in conjunction with the formation of the basins. Typical stepwise thermal demagnetization and measurement methods were used to determine the directions of characteristic remanent magnetizations (ChRMs). The mean direction of the sedimentary rocks from the Buyeo Basin after bedding correction $(D/I=356.5^{\circ}/61.5^{\circ},\;k=39.3\;\alpha_{95}=7.4^{\circ})$, is more dispersed than that before bedding correction $(D/I=356.5^{\circ}/61.5^{\circ},\;k=39.3\;\alpha_{95}=7.4^{\circ})$, which suggests that the rocks in the Buyeo Basin were remagnetized. However, the statistics and dispersion of the ChRM directions after bedding correction are still acceptable and the paleomagnetic pole position after tilt correction $(Lat./Long.=69.3^{\circ}N/186.7^{\circ}E,\;K=11.6\;A_{95}=14.0^{\circ})$ is closer to that of the Late Cretaceous pole of the Korean Peninsula. More detailed study is needed to confirm the nature of the remagnetization in the Buyeo Basin. On the other hand, the paleomagnetic pole before bedding correction $(Lat./Long.=81.6^{\circ}N/106.9^{\circ}E,\;K=25.1\;A_{95}=9.3^{\circ})$ is positioned near the paleogene pole of the Eurasian APWP. The mean ChRM direction of the sedimentary rocks from the Hampyeong Basin after bedding correction is $D/I=32.5^{\circ}/55.4^{\circ},\;(k=35.6,\;\alpha_{95}=8.7^{\circ})$. It is more clustered than that before bedding correction $D/I=18.3^{\circ}/62.5^{\circ},\;k=14.1,\;\alpha_{95}=14.2^{\circ})$, indicating that the ChRM was acquired before tilting of the strata. The paleomagnetic pole position of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Hampyeong Basin, averaged out of site pole positions calculated from the tilt-corrected ChRMs, is $Lat./Long.=63.9^{\circ}N/202.7^{\circ}E,\;(K=21.3,\;A_{95}=7.6^{\circ})$, similar to the Late Cretaceous paleomagnetic pole of the Korean Peninsula $(Lat./Long.=70.9^{\circ}N/215.4^{\circ}E,\;A_{95}=5.3^{\circ})$, suggesting that the Hampyeong Basin has been stable since the Late Cretaceous period. One normal and two reversed ChRM directions are revealed through the measurements of the volcanic rocks from the Hampyeong Basin. Although these normal and reversed directions are not exactly antipodal, it is interpreted that the normal direction is the representative primary direction of the volcanic rocks of the Hampyeong Basin and the mixed polarity is the records of geomagnetic field at the time of the formation of the volcanic rocks. Paleomagnetic poles are at $Lat./Long.=70.2^{\circ}N/199.5^{\circ}E,\;(K=18.1,\;A_{95}=9.6^{\circ})$ for the normal direction, and $Lat./Long.=65.5^{\circ}S/251.3^{\circ}E,\;(K=7.1,\;A_{95}=20.7^{\circ})$ for the reversed direction. Compared with the representative pole positions of the Cretaceous period of the Korean Peninsula, it is concluded that the age of the volcanic rocks in the Hampyeong Basin is of the Late Cretaceous.
