VOCs such as acetone, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene were adsorbed in a fixed-bed adsorber using zeolite synthesized from coal fly ash and 4 kinds of activated carbon at 101.3 kPa. The adsorber was operated batchwise with the charge of 5 g adsorbent to obtain the breakthrough curve of VOCs. Experiments were carried out at $40^{\circ}C$, nitrogen flow rate of $70cm^3/min$ and sparger temperature of $30^{\circ}C$. The deactivation model was tested for these curves by combining the adsorption of VOCs and the deactivation of adsorbent particles. The observed values of the adsorption rate constant and the deactivation rate constant were evaluated through analysis of the experimental breakthrough data using a nonlinear least square technique. The experimental breakthrough data were fitted very well to the deactivation model than the adsorption isotherm models in the literature. Also, adsorption capacities of adsorbents were obtained from the breakthrough curve to observe the correlation between adsorption capacity and the physical properties of VOCs.

In this paper, we propose both a new loss function and an online hard example mining scheme for improving the performance of single-stage object detectors which use deep convolutional neural networks. The proposed loss function and the online hard example mining scheme can not only overcome the problem of imbalance between the number of annotated objects and the number of background examples, but also improve the localization accuracy of each object. Therefore, the loss function and the mining scheme can provide intrinsically fast single-stage detectors with detection performance higher than or similar to that of two-stage detectors. In experiments conducted with the PASCAL VOC 2007 benchmark dataset, we show that the proposed loss function and the online hard example mining scheme can improve the performance of single-stage object detectors.

Formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from wood-based panels that have been made using wood particles, wood fiber, wood chips, formaldehyde-based resins and so on. In this study, we examined formaldehyde and total VOCs (TVOC) emission behaviors for plywood overlaid with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard (PL), and two kinds of surface materials (decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil) that were adhered onto the PL that named DPL and PPL. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) was used to overlay the decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil on the plywood with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard by a hot press instrument. The debonding test and accelerated aging test were conducted to assess their mechanical properties. Formaldehyde and TVOC emission concentrations were measured using the FLEC method and a VOC Analyzer, respectively. The debonding test results of PL, DPL and PPL were 1.2, 1.5, and $0.5N/mm^2$, respectively. The surface appearance of the samples were not changed after the accelerated aging test. The PL and DPL exhibited reduced formaldehyde and TVOC emission levels, respectively. In the case of PPL, the VOC value was relatively higher than those of PL and DPL.
Emissions inputs for use in air quality modeling of Korea were generated with the emissions inventory data from the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), maintained under the Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS) database. Source Classification Codes (SCC) in the Korea emissions inventory were adapted to use with the U.S. EPA's Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) by finding the best-matching SMOKE default SCCs for the chemical speciation and temporal allocation. A set of 19 surrogate spatial allocation factors for South Korea were developed utilizing the Multi-scale Integrated Modeling System (MIMS) Spatial Allocator and Korean GIS databases. The mobile and area source emissions data, after temporal allocation, show typical sinusoidal diurnal variations with high peaks during daytime, while point source emissions show weak diurnal variations. The model-ready emissions are speciated for the carbon bond version 4 (CB-4) chemical mechanism. Volatile organic carbon (VOC) emissions from painting related industries in area source category significantly contribute to TOL (Toluene) and XYL (Xylene) emissions. ETH (Ethylene) emissions are largely contributed from point industrial incineration facilities and various mobile sources. On the other hand, a large portion of OLE (Olefin) emissions are speciated from mobile sources in addition to those contributed by the polypropylene industry in point source. It was found that FORM (Formaldehyde) is mostly emitted from petroleum industry and heavy duty diesel vehicles. Chemical speciation of PM2.5 emissions shows that PEC (primary fine elemental carbon) and POA (primary fine organic aerosol) are the most abundant species from diesel and gasoline vehicles. To reduce uncertainties in processing the Korea emission inventory due to the mapping of Korean SCCs to those of U.S., it would be practical to develop and use domestic source profiles for the top 10 SCCs for area and point sources and top 5 SCCs for on-road mobile sources when VOC emissions from the sources are more than 90% of the total.

Diffused Aeration System (DAS) is one of the remediation methods used for removing contaminants in groundwater and this method brings air bubbles in contact with contaminated water, afterwards transferring contaminants in liquid phase into air phase. In this study, three applicability tests using DAS were conducted in two highly contaminated sites. For these tests, diffused air bubbles are generated with a in-flow rate of 17.1, 44.8 and 76.5 (1/min), respectively. The concentrations of TCE in grounwater and air phase were measured during the tests. The measured results showed that TCE concentration hit the highest value after 6~8 min and afterwards decreased gradually. Also, it was observed that the TCE concentration in air phase changed depending on the rate of diffused aeration. In addition, $K_La$ values from liquid to air phase were calculated based on the test results and those of three tests (test 1, 2 3) were 0.444, 1.158 and 1.836(1/hr), respectively. From the comparison of $K_La$ values, the faster air in-flow rate is, the higher the efficiency of the DAS is.
Indoor Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are classified as known or possible toxicants and odorants. This study characterized VOC levels in 11 homes in an area in the capital of Seoul by using two different methods of VOCs sampling, which are the active sampling using a thermal sorption tube and the passive sampling using a diffusion sampler. When using the active sampling method, the total target VOC concentration ranged from 41.7 to $420.7{\mu}g/m^3$ (mean $230.4{\mu}g/m^3$ ; median $221.8{\mu}g/m^3$) during winter and 21.3 to $1,431.9{\mu}g/m^3$ (mean $340.1{\mu}g/m^3$; median $175.4{\mu}g/m^3$) during summer. When using the passive method, 29.6 to $257.5{\mu}g/m^3$ (mean $81.8{\mu}g/m^3$; median $49.4{\mu}g/m^3$) during winter and 1.2 to $5,131.1{\mu}g/m^3$ (mean $1,758.8{\mu}g/m^3$; median $1,375.1{\mu}g/m^3$) during summer. Forty-nine VOCs were quantified and toluene showed the highest concentration regardless of the season and the sampling method studied. The distribution of VOCs was relatively varied by using the active method. However, it showed a low correlation with indoor environmental factors such as room temperature, humidity and ventilation time. The correlation between indoor environmental factors and VOCs were relatively high in the passive method. In particular, these characteristics were confirmed by principal component analysis.
In this paper, a lightweight network with fewer parameters compared to the existing object detection method is proposed. In the case of the currently used detection model, the network complexity has been greatly increased to improve accuracy. Therefore, the proposed network uses EfficientNet as a feature extraction network, and the subsequent layers are formed in a pyramid structure to utilize low-level detailed features and high-level semantic features. An attention process was applied between pyramid structures to suppress unnecessary noise for prediction. All computational processes of the network are replaced by depth-wise and point-wise convolutions to minimize the amount of computation. The proposed network was trained and evaluated using the PASCAL VOC dataset. The features fused through the experiment showed robust properties for various objects through a refinement process. Compared with the CNN-based detection model, detection accuracy is improved with a small amount of computation. It is considered necessary to adjust the anchor ratio according to the size of the object as a future study.

A zeolite sheet (ceramic paper containing zeolite) made in a cylindrical configuration can be applied to a honeycomb rotor for the effective VOC removal. In this study, the zeolite sheet containing ZSM-5 was used as a support for Pt-loading, and its catalytic activity for the toluene combustion reaction was compared with those of the other Pt catalysts loaded on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and cordierite honeycomb. Pt/zeolite sheet catalyst showed a higher activity for toluene combustion reaction than that of $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ or Pt/cordierite honeycomb. On the other hand, the dispersion of Pt particles loaded on the zeolite sheet was improved by the pretreatment with $NH_3-H_2O$ vapor at room temperature. Consequently, the pretreatment of Pt/zeolite sheet by $NH_3-H_2O$ vapor significantly enhanced the catalytic activation for toluene combustion reaction.
In this paper, the fine dust (PM10) and ultrafine dust (PM2.5) measurement platforms are designed to be mobile and fixed using oneM2M, the international standard for IoT. The fine dust measurement platform is composed and designed with a fine dust measurement device, agent, oneM2M platform, oneM2M IPE, and monitoring system. The main difference between mobile and fixed is that the mobile uses the MQTT protocol for interconnection between devices and services without blind spots based on LTE connection, and the fixed uses the LoRaWAN protocol with low power and wide communication range. Not only fine dust, but also temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and noise data related to daily life were collected. The collected sensor values were managed using the common API provided by oneM2M through the agent and oneM2M IPE, and it was designed into four resource types: AE and container. Six functions of operability, flexibility, convenience, safety, reusability, and scalability were analyzed through the fine dust measurement platform design.
The volatile organic compounds(VOCs) have been recognized as a major contributor to air pollution. The catalytic oxidation is one of the most important processes for VOCs destruction due to getting high efficiency at low temperature. In this study, monometallic Pt and bimetallic Pt-Ru, Pt-Ir were supported to ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Xylene, toluene and MEK were used as reactants. The monometallic or bimetallic catalysts were prepared by the excess wetness impregnation method and were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and BET analysis. As a result, Pt-Ru, Pt-Ir bimetallic catalysts showed higher conversion than Pt monometallic catalyst. Pt-Ir bimetallic catalyst showed the highest conversion on the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ support. In the VOCs oxidation, Pt-Ru, Pt-Ir bimetallic catalyst had multipoint active sites, so it improved the range of Pt metal state. Therefore, bimetallic catalysts showed higher conversion of VOCs than monometallic ones. In this study, the use of small amount of Ru, Ir to Pt promoted oxidation conversion of VOCs.
