Ammonia removal capacities of five submerged filter media, 2~3mm sand, 30~50mm gravel, 20~40mm coral sand, polythylene net, and corrugated plastic plate in a seawater recirculating system were tested. A rotating biological contactor (RBC) was also tested for comparison. Oxygen consumption rates were measured along with the ammonia removal efficiencies. The ammonia concentrations in the system were maintained from 0.052 to 0.904 mg/l (mean 0.338$\pm$0.219 mg/l) and the water temperature was ranged from 19.2 to $21.4^{\circ}C\;(mean 20.2^{\circ}C\pm0.58^{\circ}C$). The 1/2-order kinetic model (Y:g/$m^3$/day) and the mean ammonia removal rates (g/$m^3$/day) of the filter media were : Sand : Y=135.5X0.5-25.1(r2=0.8110), 45.1 Coral sand : Y=125.1X0.5-33.0 (r2=0.7307), 31.8 Polyethylene net : Y=87.4X0.5-20.1 (r2=0.6780), 25.2 Corrugated plastic plate : Y=87.4X0.5-20.1(r2=0.5206), 19.2 Gravel : Y=4307X0.5-5.5 (r2=0.2596), 17.1 RBC : Y=127.6X0.5-33.4 (r2=0.7146), 32.8 where X is the concentration of ammonia. Oxygen consumption rates well corresponded to the ammonia removal capacities of each filter medium, thus the sands showing the highest value (442g/$m^3$/day) followed by coral sands (291.1g/$m^3$/day), polyethylene nets (236.9g/$m^3$/day), gravels (135.6g/$m^3$/day) and corrugated plastic plates (134.2g/$m^3$/day). Oxygen consumption rate of the RBC was unable to measure because of the characteristics of the structure.
This study was to survey proper condition of nitrate removal by hydraulic retention time (HRT) and measured growth of black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) and giant croaker (Nibea japonica) in the seawater recirculating culture system designed for nitrate removal. Nitrate conversion to nitrogen at 8 hr-HRT was higher than 16 hr-HRT, amounting to $32.2\;g/m^3/day$ in the seawater recirculating culture system. The removal efficiency of nitrate improved when dissolved oxygen was situated less than 0.5 mg/L. Daily growth rate (DGR) and feed efficiency (FE) of S. schlegeli with mean body weight of 108 g in 8 hr-HRT were significantly higher values than those in 4 hr-HRT (P<0.05). The DGR and FE of N. japonica with mean body weight of 12 g in added carbon system showed not differing in the values from N. japonica in control system (P>0.05).
Naturally-occurring iron minerals, goethite and magnetite, were used to catalyze hydrogen peroxide and initiate Fenton-like oxidation of silica sand contaminated with diesel, kerosene in batch systems. Reaction conditions were investigated by varying H$_2$0$_2$concentration(0%, 1%, 15%), initial contaminant concentration(0.2, 0.5, 1.0g diesel and kerosene/kg soil), and iron minerals(1, 5wt% magnetite or goethite). Contaminant degradations in silica sand-iron mineral-$H_2O$$_2$ systems were identified by determining total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH) concentration. In case of silica sand contaminated with diesel(1g contaminan/kg soil with 5wt% magnetite) addition of 0%, 1%, 15% of $H_2O$$_2$showed 0%, 25%, and 60% of TPH reduction in 8 days, respectively When the mineral contents were varied from 1 to 5wt%, removal of contaminants increased by 16% for magnetite and 13.1% for goethite. The results from system contaminated by kerosene were similar to those of the diesel. Reaction of magnetite system was more aggressive than that of goethite system due to dissolution of iron and presence of iron(II) and iron(III); however, dissolved iron precipitated on the surface of iron mineral and seemed to cause reducing electron transfer activity on the surface and quenching $H_2$$O_2$. The system used goethite has better treatment efficiency due to less $H_2$$O_2$ consumption. Results of this study showed possible application of catalyzed $H_2$$O_2$ system to petroleum contaminated site without addition of iron source since natural soils generally contain iron minerals such as magnetite and goethite.
By cytotoxicity screening of the 65 Korean medicinal plants against leukemia L1210 and P388D$_{1}$ cell line using the MTT assay in vitro, Albizzia julibrissin was studied. This plant was extracted with MeOH and MeOH extract was solvent-fractionated with CHCl$_{3}$, EtOAc and n-BuOH in sequence. Each fraction by various solvents system was purified by column chromatography and preparative TLC, and four compounds were isolated. The structure of each compound was deduced from UV, IR, $^{1}$H-HMR, $^{13}$ C-NMR and CI-MS spectral data. The cytotoxic activity ($IC_{50}$/_ of the compounds, quercetin-3-rhamnoside, 4',5,7-trihydroxyfla-van-3-glucoside, spinasterol-3-glucoside and acacic acid lactone, were evaluated as 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 2$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml against L1210 and as 9$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 10$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 0.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml against P388D$_{1}$, respectively.
Recently new soybean saponins with D DMP (2,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-2,3,- dihydro-4H-pyran-4-one) moiety have been isolated from legumes. The purpose of this study is to characterize ROS scavenging activities of DDMP saponins ($\alpha$g, $\beta$g saponin) isolated from Glycine max (L.) Merrill. The scavenging activity on OH was examined in terms of lipid peroxidation in the rat liver homogenates and the same activity on $O_2$ was also determined in the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system, respectively. Up to 0.25 mg DDMP saponins ($\alpha$g and $\beta$g saponins) did not cause any significant effects on the prevention of lipid peroxidation as compared with the control group. In terms of superoxide scavenging activities, 0.25 and 0.5 mg $\alpha$g saponin inhibits only 2.6% and 5.5% (p<0.05) of the control group, respectively. However, $\alpha$g saponin dose-dependently (p<0.01, r=0.955) inhibits the formation of superoxide radical unto 21.3% of the control group with a maximal dose of 0.5 mg (p<0.01), equivalent to 0.17 units of superoxide dismutase activity.
5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was reported to elicit natriuresis and diuresis when given intracerebroventricularly (icv) and these effects were shown to be abolished by icv methysergide, $5-HT{_1}$ antagonist, thus suggesting that central tryptaminergic system may also participate in the regulation of renal function. We tried in this study to elucidate the role of $5-HT_2$ receptors in the central tryptaminergic regulation of renal function, observing the effects of icv ketanserin, a specific $5-HT_2$ antagonist. Ketanserin (KET) icv in doses of $120{\mu}g$$(=0.3\;{\mu}moles)/kg$ produced significant natriuresis without affecting renal hemodynamics, indicating that it resulted from decreased tubular Na reabsorption. Systemic blood pressure decreased slightly but significantly. When given iv, no significant effect was observed. 5-HT, $200{\mu}g/kg$ icv, produced mild but significant natriuresis and diuresis. However, after KET, $40{\mu}\;g/kg$ icv, a dose which minimally affects renal function, the natriuresis and diuresis by 5-HT was greatly augmented, with the fractional excretion of filtered sodium reaching 9.3%. The renal effects of other biogenic amines administered icv, such as norepinephrine, dopamine and histamine, were not significantly affected by the KET pretreatment. These observations suggest that central tryptaminergic system influences renal function in dual ways, i.e., natriuretic and diuretic influence via $5-HT_1$ receptors, whereas $5-HT_2$ subtypes mediate the antinatriuretic and antidiuretic effects, and that the central tryptaminergic system plays a role in the regulation of rabbit renal function.

Utilization of animal excreta in aquaculture can have potentials of high fish production and low maintenance costs for fish farming and it can reduce water pollution caused by animal waste disposal. Integration of wastewater treatment pond system with aquaculture has been utilized in many countries. Ecologically balanced pond ecosystem is formed through the stabilization of wastes, the growth of aquatic plants, and the cultivation of fish. The most appropriate fish for rearing in these ponds are those which can feed directly on phytoplankton, especially algae. Carp were introduced into a tertiary pond - water depth of 2.2 m, water surface area of $130\;m^2$, volume of $148\;m^3$ - of a pond system treating milk cow excreta. The carp production was $125g{\cdot}m^{-2}year^{-1}$ which falls into upper range of $18\;-\;137g{\cdot}m^{-2}year^{-1}$ of treated sewage-fed carp farming of other countries. Average $BOD_5$ and T-N of the pond was 19.8 and $21.0\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ respectively, and the ecological environment of it was suitable for growth of carp. Several carp of 100g were introduced in August into a secondary pond of the treatment system, whose average $BOD_5$ and T-N was 27.9 and $30.8\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ respectively. They were died within one week, which may be attributed to the depletion of dissolved oxygen at dawn. Effluents from primary treatment can be used in fish pond with dilution and those from secondary treatment can be directly funnelled into it. Waste stabilization pond treating animal excreta can be utilized for fish rearing when its water quality maintains secondary treatment level.

This study was done to provide basic data on the safety of professionals in medical imaging system by measuring the electromagnetic waves generated in the medical imaging system being used in medical organization. The studied medical imaging systems were general X-ray system, computed tomography(CT), ultrasonographic system, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), PET-CT and fluoroscopic system, and through these devices, electric field and magnetic field were measured and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the measured values classified by the medical organizations were not much significant, but in the measurement by the medical imaging systems, there were high hazard elements in the sequential order of electric field PET-CT($17.7{\pm}22.9$)v/m, CT($10.3{\pm}8.7$)v/m, general X-ray system ($8.8{\pm}8.8$)v/m, magnetic field general X-ray system($5.06{\pm}8.26$)mG, CT($2.71{\pm}4.53$)mG and PET-CT($0.74{\pm}0.34$)mG, the systems that adopted X-ray as main ray source, and the more aged the medical imaging systems, the greater the effects of electro-magnetic waves($10.6{\pm}15.93v/m$ for 5 years or more, $6.14{\pm}5.60v/m$ for 5 years or less). The effects of electromagnetic waves on medical imaging systems or facilities were not much when the notification of ministry of knowledge economy is considered, but in the overall perspective considering all the equipments and facility of the medical organization, such effects were significant. It is determined that sustainable safety managements of electric field and magnetic field must be done during process from medical imaging system installation to maintenance to rule out such factors.
