  • This study presents the structure design of antenna to have the dual band characteristics in a desired frequency band through the structural modification of an antenna structure. For the experiment, a wideband crossed planar monopole antenna was used. The target frequency band was set to ISM 2.45GHz/5.8GHz. To give the properties, an additional antenna element was added to the crossed planar monopole antenna, which is a main body of the antenna. And then structural adjustment parameter was set to change the length(shape) of the antenna. Various simulations were conducted to find the dual band characteristics in the desired frequency band. The simulations brought forth the antenna bandwidth above the normal values for ISM 2.45GHz/5.8GHz. The structural adjustment parameter introduced in this study for structural modification of an antenna can be useful in developing an antenna featured with dual band(multiband) characteristics.

  • A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance was developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) and a CFD technique based on the Rankine source panel method with the nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. During the whole optimization process the geometry of the hull shape was represented based on the NURBS(Non-uniform rational B-spline) technique and the modification of the hull shape was controlled using the Bell-shaped distribution function to keep the fairness of the hull shape before and after the hull modification. The numerical analysis was carried out using 4000TEU container ship in the towing tank facility installed in the Pusan national university to know the validity of the developed algorithm for this study. As the results of the numerical analysis it proved that the resistance of the optimized hull is conspicuously reduced in comparison with the original hull in a wave-making resistance point of view.

  • The modification of rice powder was attempted by treatment of acetic acid and epichlorohydrin to improve the functional properties of baby food. The initial gelatinization temperature of rice powder determined by amylograph was decreased from $79.5^{\circ}C$ to $63^{\circ}C$ by modification. The apparent and maxium viscosity of rice paste at $95^{\circ}C$ before and after modification were increased from 92B.U. to 236B.U. and from 100B.U. to 202B.U., respectively. The light transmittance of modified rice paste was increased from the temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and by increasing the degree of substitution at the fixed temperature, while decrease more or less by the treatment of epichlorohydrin. The degree of retrogradation of the paste was decreased from 28.7 to 18.0 upon modification. The rate of syneresis of modified rice powder was decreased with increasing the drgree of substitution and ,the extend of epichlorohydrin treatment. Syneresis was not observed when acetylated rice powder whose DS value is 0.048 was treated with 0.25% of epichlorohydrin for the formation of cross-linkage. The addition of modified rice powder in preparation of semi-solid type infant food could improve the quality without lowering overall digestibility.

  • The goal of this research is to reduce noise level of an outdoor unit of air conditioner by changing its dynamic characteristics using SDM (structural dynamics modification) technique. At first, the emitting noise was measured and analyzed. The measurement records show the most critical frequency components which influences on the noise level. Then it was tried to move the natural frequencies outside the critical frequency region by SDM. Since it is very difficult to get a reliable FE model of air conditioner, experimentally measured frequency response functions were used to derive sensitivities that are very important to obtain design changes. The positions of modification and the thickness of modifying structures were determined to improve the dynamic characteristics of air conditioner. The recommended design guideline to move its natural frequencies outside the targeting frequency range was obtained. Then in order to prove its effectiveness, the changed design was experimentally tested and found that the SDM result is very effective to reduce not only its vibration but also its emitting noise.

  • A matrix modification was studied for the determination of trace bismuth in water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The type and quantity of modifiers as well as the use of auxiliary modifiers were investigated to realize the efficient modification. Palladium was chosen as a single modifier. By the addition of palladium($5{\mu}g/mL$) to 100 ng/mL bismuth solution, the temperatures could be raised from $500^{\circ}C$ to $1,300^{\circ}C$ for the charring and from $2,000^{\circ}C$ to $2,200^{\circ}C$ for the atomization as well as the sensitivity and reproducibility were improved. The absorbance of bismuth was maximum and not changed in the range of Pd $3-25{\mu}g/mL$. And several materials were examined as an auxiliary modifier. The mixed solution of $1{\mu}g/mL$ palladium and $200{\mu}g/mL$ nickel have raised the temperatures as with $5{\mu}g/mL$ palladium only. The maximum absorbance of bismuth was shown in the nickel concentration range of $100-300{\mu}g/mL$ in $1{\mu}g/mL$ palladium modified system. With such optimum conditions, the trace amount of bismuth in several water samples could be determined by a calibration curve method, and good recoveries were also obtained.

  • We studied to improve the functional properties of soybean protein isolate by dimethylglutarylation and acetylation. Soybean protein isolate was acylated rapidly up to 80% modification and more of 80% modification was proceed slowly. Electrophoretic analysis showed that more changes in modified protein. Also, modification of soybean protein produced more ionizable tyrosines and exposed more hydrophobic groups, while modified protein exhibited a loss of reactive sulfhydryl groups. Spectrophoretic studies demonstrated that the shift was occurred at the UV 278nm and fluorescence 333nm, respectively, and the intensity decreased as the degree of modification was increased.

  • We have studied on the tribological characteristics of surface modification by Arc Ion Implantation(AIP) coating method. Coating materials were deposited by the Titanium carbide(TiC) and Titanium nitride(TiN). An experimental process was established to determine the tribological characteristics of friction and wear behaviour with the variation of applied load, temperature and the time by the Falex friction and wear test machine. The results, It can be improved that when the surface modification of hard coatings(TiC, TiN) was deposited steel, the tribological characteristics become better. It is argued that improved because of excellence of the anti-wear, the extreme pressure properties and the heat stability.

  • Chemical modification of gelatin-based macroporous microcanier beads was achieved by increasing the charge density through incorporation of (diethylamino)ethylchloride-hydrochloride (DEAE:CI-HCI) or lysine, and this significantly improved the attachment and growth of HepG2 cells. When microcarriers were modified by the addition of 2% lysine, positive charge density was 0.95 meq/g-caniers. In case of modification of microcarriers with DEAE:CI-HCI, positive charge density was 0.6 meq/g-caniers. An increase in charge density of the microcaniers to improve cell attachment has facilitated the growth of the cells on macroporous gelatin microcaniers. Also, final HepG2 cell concentration cultivated on modified beads with DEAE:CI-HCI was increased up to $10^7$ cells/ml. This was 2-3 times higher than that obtained with unmodified macroporous gelatin microcarriers.

  • We have carried out the surface modification of photocatalytic $TiO_2$ with triethoxysilane through dehydrogenation reaction and characterized the modified photocatalyst by spectroscopic methods, such as FT-IR, solid-state $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR, XPS, and XRF, etc. We also examined photocatalytic activity of the immobilized photocatalytic titanium dioxide with triethoxysilane by decolorization reaction of dyes such as cong red and methylene blue under visible light. Dispersion test showed that the photocatalytic titanium dioxide immobilized with triethoxysilane group has kept higher dispersibility than titanium dioxide itself. No appreciable precipitation takes place even after standing for 24 h in the 4:6 mixture ratio of ethanol and water.

  • The nickel oxide, the most widely used cathode material for the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), has several disadvantages including NiO dissolution, poor mechanical strength, and corrosion phenomena during MCFC operation. The surface modification of NiO with lanthanum maintains the advantages, such as performance and stability, and suppresses the disadvantages of NiO cathode because the modification results in the formation of $LaNiO_3$ phase which has high conductivity, stability, and catalytic activity. As a result, La-modified NiO cathode shows low NiO dissolution, high degree of lithiation, and mechanical strength, and high cell performance and catalytic activity in comparison with the pristine NiO. These enhanced physico-chemical and electrochemical properties and the durability in marine environment allow MCFC to marine application as a auxiliary propulsion system.
