Effects of $Mn_2O_3, Y_2O_3$ Additives and Valence State of Mn ion in $Sr(Zr, Ti)O_3$ Microwave Dielectrics ($Sr(Zr, Ti)O_3$ 마이크로파 유전체에 첨가된 $Mn_2O_3, Y_2O_3$ 의 영향과 Mn의 산화상태)

  • The effects of Mn2O3 and Y2O3 additives on the microstructure and dielectric properties of Sr(Zr, Ti)O3 have been investigated. Powders with Sr(Zr1-xTix)O3(0$\leq$x$\leq$0.1) composition were prepared by the conventional solid state processing from commercial TiO2 and precipitation-processed ZrO2. The powders containing sintering additives of Mn2O3 and Y2O3 were compacted and then sintered at 1,55$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h to get>97% relative density. Mn2O3 suppressed the grain growth and Y2O3 enhanced the density of sintered body. The oxidation state of Mn ions were determined by a chemical wet method and EPR spectroscopy. Mn ions were present as Mn2+ and Mn4+ in SrZrO3, while as Mn3+ and Mn4+ in Ti-substituted Sr(Zr, Ti)O3. With the substitution of Ti, the lattice parameters of SrZrO3 decreased and its dielectric constant increased with remarkable decrease in Q value. The dielectric constant of Sr(Zr, Ti)O3 was in the range of 30 to 40, Q values 1,200~5,400 at 6 GHz and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency -67~100 ppm/K.

Fabrication of $Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$ and $CaO-ZrO_2$ Fibers by Sol-Gel Process and Their Phase Characterization by Raman Microprobe (졸-겔법에 의한 $Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$계와 $CaO-ZrO_2$계 섬유의 제조 및 Raman Microprobe에 의한 상분석)

  • ZrO2 fibers were fabricated by means of the Sol-Gel process using Zr(O-nC3H7)4-H2O-C2H5OH-HNO3 solution as a starting material. The optimum experimental parameters such as molar ratio of starting materials, concentration, temperature, viscosity, the amounts of stabilizer and the pH of solution were determined. The experimentally determined optimum variables which produce good ZrO2 fibers were used to manufacture the Y2O3-and CaO-ZrO2 fibers. The amounts of Y2O3 and CaO were varied within the range from 1.5~5 mol% and 3~15 mol% respectively. The phase transformation and microstructural evolution of the fabricated ZrO2 gel fibers were investigated after heat treatments up to 120$0^{\circ}C$ by X-ray diffraction, Raman microprobe spectroscopy, SEM, and specific surface area and pore volume measurements. From the analysis of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra, the phase of heat treated Y2O3-and CaO partially stabilized ZrO2 gel fibers(Y2O3:2.5~3 mol%, CaO:6~9 mol%) were identified as a tetragonal phase up to 100$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum tensile strength of 2.5Y2O3-97.5ZrO2 and 6CaO-94ZrO2 (in mol%) fibers heat treated at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was found be 1.3~2 GPa with diameters of 10~20 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • 연속슬립캐스팅 및 상압소결법으로 $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$적층복합체를 제조하였으며, 적층복합체에서 ZrO$_2$층을 단사정, 정방정 및 입방정으로 각각 달리 적층하여 균열생성 및 전파 거동에 미치는 ZrO$_2$상의 영향을 고찰하였다. 균열 생성은 냉각시 $Al_2$O$_3$층과 ZrO$_2$층 간의 열팽창 계수의 차이에 의한 열적불일치응력이 가장 큰 요인으로 작용하였다. 적층체 내에 존재하는 균열은 tetra-ZrO$_2$의 경우 적층두께 조절로 가능하였으며, cubic-ZrO$_2$의 경우는 냉각속도 조절로 균열밀도로 크게 낮출 수 있었다. $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$적층체를 구성하는 세가지 ZrO$_2$상(mono, tetra, cubic)들 중에서 cubic-ZrO$_2$가 포함된 적층체의 경우 $Al_2$O$_3$와 ZrO$_2$계면에 형성된 잔류압축응력으로 인한 균열굴절 효과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • The effect of stress induced phase transformation on $Al_2 O_3$ matrix dispersed with $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$ has been studied. In order to determinate the mechanical properties three $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composite series containing 1, 3 and 5 mole% $Y_2O_3$ were prepared. The starting materials were $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$ which was prepared from the aqueous solution of high purity $YCl_3$.$6H_2O$ and $ZrOCl_2$.$8H_2O$. Powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ containing $Y_2O_3$ have been prepared by ball-milling with methanol and the samples were formed by isostatic press and sintered at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. After sintering. the specimens were polished for mechanical determination. The relative density of sintered specimens were also measured. It was found that the addition of 1, 3mole% to {{{{ { ZrO}_{2 } }} allowed full retention of the tetragonal phase in $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ but partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was produced by additions of 5 mole% $Y_2O_3$.The critical stress-intensity factor KIc of $A_2O_3-ZrO_2$ (containing 1 mole% $Y_2O_3$) composite materials increased with increasing $ZrO_2$ content, The maximum value of KIC=7Mn/$m^3$/2 at 20 mole% $ZrO_2$ exhibited about twice that of the $Al_2 O_3$ The modulus of rupture exhibited a trend similiar to KIC The maximum value of MOR was 580MN/m2. As the amount of Y2O3 increase it was observed that the maximum of KIC and MOR decreased : Additions of 3 mole% $Al_2O_3$ $Y_2O_3$ allowed the maximum of KIC 6MN/$m^3$/2 MOR 540MN/$m^2$ at 15 mole% $ZrO_2$ additions of 5 mole% $Y_2O_3$ allowed the maximum of KIC 5MN/$m^3$/2 MOR 410MN/$m^2$ at 10 mole% $ZrO_2$.

Mechanical Properties of ZTA Composites Fabricated by Reaction Bonding (반응결합에 의해 제조된 ZTA복합체의 기계적 특성)

  • The mechanical properties of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites fabricated by RBAO(reaction bonded aluminium oxide) process were investigated. As the amount of ZrO2 increased the sinstered density of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites decreased slightly, but wear resistance was enhanced. Bending strength of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites increased in proportion to the amount of al in case of a fixed ZrO2 content. When the amount of Al was fixed bending strength reached its maximum value at 25 wt% ZrO2. The fracture toughness(K1c) increased with increasing content of ZrO2, but decreased with increasing Al amount. On the other hand, the fracture mode of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was the mixed mode of inter-and transgranular fracture.

  • Mechanical property enhancing mechanisms of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ two phase ceramic composites were studied for several compositions of different $ZrO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ ratio. Microstructural analysis of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_3$(pure) composites indicated that pre-existing microcrack due to larger $ZrO_2$ particle at grain boundary extended along alumina grain boundaries within process zone. Microcracks also nucleated when very small $ZrO_2$ particles at the grain boundaries transformed to monoclinic phase at near of main crack tip. These types of microcracks could contribute to the toughening achieved by creating additional crack surface area during crack propagation. Microstructural analyses also showed that the average grain size and abnormal grain size of $Al_2O_3$ were decreased with increasing $ZrO_2$ vol% in $Al_2O_3$ matrix. As a result it could be concluded as follows In TEX>$Al_2O_3-ZrO_3$(pure) system 1. Microcrack nucleation (stress-induced microcracking) and extension was effective mechanism for absorpiton of fracture energy 2, More narrow distribution and smaller grain size of $Al_2O_3$ due to $ZrO_2$particles mainly contributed to main-tatin the strength and hardness.

  • The effects of the addition of either monoclinic $ZrO_2(pure)$ or tetragonal $ZrO_2$ containing 5.35wt% $Y_2O_3(Y-TZP)$ on the mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP increased sintered density of $Al_2O_3$. The Vickers hardness also increased as the volume fraction of Y-TZP increased going through a maximum at 20wt%. The hardness of the specimens was found to be dependent on the sintered density. The higher volume fraction of either $ZrO_2(m)$ or Y-TZP resulted in the higher fracture toughness of the composite was. This result may be taken as evidence that toughening of $Al_2O_3$ can be achieved by not only the transformation toughening but microcrack toughening of $ZrO_2$. The thermal shock property for $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composites was improved by increasing the volume fraction of monoclinic $ZrO_2(pure)$. The grain size increased as the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$ did.

  • The effect of additions, $TiO_2$ and $ZrO_2$ as nucleant on the base glass which composition was determined to 0.97 $Li_2O-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ has been investigated by means of D.T.A., X-ray diffraction and dilatation. $TiO_2$ and $ZrO_2$ as nucleant were added 0.06mole, in which ratios of $TiO_2$/$ZrO_2$ were varied 1/0, 2/1, 1/1, 1/2 and 0/1. The crystalline phases were appeared to $\beta$-spodumene as principal, $\beta$-eucryptite and $ZrO_2$ as secondary, regardless of nucleant variations. The crystallinity of the crystallized glass added $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$ mixture as nucleant was higher than that of the glass added $TiO_2$ or $ZrO_2$ only. The crystallinity of the glass added $TiO_2$/$ZrO_2$ =1/1 was highest. Increasing the addition of $ZrO_2$, it has been observed that the crystal growing temperature became higher.

Characteristics of Al2O3/ZrO2 Ceramics by the Dispersion Process of ZrO2 Particles (ZrO2 입자의 분산방법에 따른 Al2O3/ZrO2 요업체의 특성)

  • For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.

  • The alumina-zirconia composite powders of core particle ZrO2 coated with Al2O3 were prepared by the hydrolysis-deposition of the mixed aluminum salt solution of Al2(SO4)3-Al(NO3)3-Urea. The effects of hydrolysis reaction and coating parameters on characteristics of coated powders and composites were also investigated. The degree of coating could be estimated from the ratio of tetra-/mono-ZrO2 present at the room temperature after heat-treating coated powders at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and the result of TEM observations. When the content of ZrO2 in the dispersed coating system, the coating time, and the volume ratio of water/solution were 50 mg/g, 180 min, and 5, respectively the coating efficiency was maximum (the ratio of tetra-/mono-ZrO2 was 87/13). The relative densities of coated Al2O3-ZrO2 composites sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs were about 91~98% and the maximum ratio of tetra-/mono-ZrO2 in Al2O3-20wt% ZrO2 composites was 62/38.
