Evaluation of Soil Drying Techniques (토양건조방법들에 대한 평가)

  • Influence of several dehydration treatments on original structure and water behavior in the process of drying were investigated employing three hawaiian volcanic ash soils and four synthetic minerals. These three soils were developed under different rainfall condition and contained three different amount of amorphous materials in them. Measurement of water losses by oven drying at $105^{\circ}C$, $P_2O_5$ drying, freeze drying, and critical point drying revealed that more water losses were noted by oven drying than by three other drying techniques and the differences of water losses between oven and $P_2O_5$-drying were closely related to amoun: of amorphous materials in them, showing the order of Kaiwiki > Hilo > Kawaihae. This indicates that dehydration of amorphous materials by elevated temperature ($105^{\circ}C$) excluded water beyond that in the adsorbed (hygroscopic) state. The effect of dehydration treatments on initial structure was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. The micrographs showed that oven-and $P_2O_5$-dried samples formed into large mass of sub-angular blocky, dense, and closed crumbs, while the freeze dried and critical point dried samples resulted in less shrinkage, and small, fluffy and open spongy structure. However, critical point drying technique produced bulkier, softer, and greater open structure samples than even freeze drying. DFT Study for Substitution Patterns of C20H18X2 Regioisomers (X = F, Cl, Br, or OH)

  • We used the hybrid density-functional (B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)) method to analyze the substitution patterns of $C_{20}H_{18}X_2$ derivatives (X = F, Cl, Br, or OH) obtained as disubstituted $C_{20}H_{20}$ cages. Our results suggest that the cis-1 regioisomers (1,2-dihalo derivatives) are less stable than the trans-1 regioisomers (1,20-dihalo derivatives), whereas in the case of the dihydroxy derivatives, the cis-1 regioisomer is more stable than the trans-1 regioisomer. This implies that in the dihalo-induced strain cages of $C_{20}H_{18}X_2$, the strain effect would affect the relative energies, while in the dihydroxide, the hydrogen bonds have a stronger effect on the relative energies in cis-1 regioisomer than the strain effect do. Thus this supports the experimental result in which the bisvicinal tetrol was of particular preparative-synthetic interest as a substitute for the lacking bisvicinal tetrabromide. Further, the topologies of the HOMO and LUMO characteristics of all $C_{20}H_{18}Cl_2$ and $C_{20}H_{18}Br_2$ regioisomers with the same symmetry are same, but they are different from those of $C_{20}H_{18}F_2$ and $C_{20}H_{18}(OH)_2$. This indicates that the five regioisomers of each $C_{20}H_{20}$ disubstituted derivative will have an entirely different set of characteristic chemical reactions.

  • In this paper, a new method for obtaining three-dimensional shape of an object by measuring relative blur between images using wavelet analysis has been described. Most of the previous methods use inverse filtering to determine the measure of defocus. These methods suffer from some fundamental problems like inaccuracies in finding the frequency domain representation, windowing effects, and border effects. Besides these deficiencies, a filter, such as Laplacian of Gaussian, that produces an aggregate estimate of defocus for an unknown texture, can not lead to accurate depth estimates because of the non-stationary nature of images. We propose a new depth from defocus (DFD) method using wavelet analysis that is capable of performing both the local analysis and the windowing technique with variable-sized regions for non-stationary images with complex textural properties. We show that normalized image ratio of wavelet power by Parseval's theorem is closely related to blur parameter and depth. Experimental results have been presented demonstrating that our DFD method is faster in speed and gives more precise shape estimates than previous DFD techniques for both synthetic and real scenes.

  • This paper is related to the method of adding a emotional speech corpus to a high-quality large corpus based speech synthesizer, and generating various synthesized speech. We made the emotional speech corpus as a form which can be used in waveform concatenated speech synthesizer, and have implemented the speech synthesizer that can be generated various synthesized speech through the same synthetic unit selection process of normal speech synthesizer. We used a markup language for emotional input text. Emotional speech is generated when the input text is matched as much as the length of intonation phrase in emotional speech corpus, but in the other case normal speech is generated. The BIs(Break Index) of emotional speech is more irregular than normal speech. Therefore, it becomes difficult to use the BIs generated in a synthesizer as it is. In order to solve this problem we applied the Variable Break[3] modeling. We used the Japanese speech synthesizer for experiment. As a result we obtained the natural emotional synthesized speech using the break prediction module for normal speech synthesize.

  • AMB(Acid Mine Drainage), characterized as high concentration of metal & sulfate ions and low pH(2.0~4.0), is the world-wide problem wherever there is or has been mining activities. Though limestone has been generally used to neutralize AMD, There are metal hydroxide precipitation on the surface of limestone and excessive alkalinity formation which exceeds the regulation. In this research, concrete-recycled fine aggregate is selected for alternative neutralizing agent. Because fine recycled aggregate had more ANP than others in the preliminary research, the purpose of this research is to apply fine aggregate for AMD neutralization. Three columns packed with fine aggregates(2.5mm$O_3$) of it is calculated as 0.09(C-1), approximated 10% purity of limestone. Comparing with values of other columns(C-2: 0.01 and C-3: 0.01), there is variation of porosity and residence time induced from the precipitation of metal hydroxide. Consequently, 8 hours of HRT is enough to create adequate alkalinity and the function which could expect the variation of porosity(n) and residence time( $t_{R}$) should be applied to develop design function.lied to develop design function.

  • The binary random copolyesters of poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBS/PBT) were synthesized and their sequence distributions were investigated over the entire range for PBS/PBT copolyester compositions by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The melting point (Tm) of these copolyesters were depressed gradually with the increase of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) mol% in composition and appeared an eutetic behaviour which appears a minimum at ST3 (DMT 65.8 mol%). The melting behaviour of PBS/PBT copolyester was not directly depended on molar fraction (Xa) but on only the sequence propagation probability (P) which occurs in triad fraction. It also can be seen that when the succinate units (or terephthalate units) were abundant enough, PBS/PBT Copolymers formed only PBS (or PBT) crystal with complete rejection of the terephthalate units (or succinate units).

  • Dextranase (${\alpha}$-1,6-D-glucan-6-glucanogydrolase:E.C. 3.2.1.11) catalyzes the hydrolysis of ${\alpha}$-(1.6) linkages of dextran. A lsd1 gene encoding an extracellular dextranase was isolated from the genomic DNA of L. starkeyi. The lsd11 gene is a synthetic dextranase (lsd1) after codon optimization for gene expression with Pichia pastoris system. A open reading frame of lsd11 gene was 1827 bp and it was inserted into the pPIC3.5K expression vector. The plasmid linearized by Sac I was integrated into the 5'AOX region of the chromosomal DNA of P. pastoris. The lsd11 gene fragment encoding a mature protein of 608 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 70 kDa, was expressed in the methylotrophic yeast P. pastoris by controling the alcohol oxidase-1 (AOX1) promoter. The recombinant lds11 was optimized by using the shake-flask expression and upscaled using fermentation technology. More than 9.8 mg/L of active dextranase was obtained after induction by methanol. The optimum pH of LSD11 was found to be 5.5 and the optimum temperature $28^{\circ}C$.

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the stress distribution and displacement in different fixation methods of bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy

  • Objectives: This study evaluated a range of fixation methods to determine which is best for the postoperative stabilization of a mandibular osteotomy using three-dimensional finite element analysis of the stress distribution on the plate, screw and surrounding bone and displacement of the lower incisors. Materials and Methods: The model was generated using the synthetic skull scan data, and the surface model was changed to a solid model using software. Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed using the program, and 8 different types of fixation methods were evaluated. A vertical load of 10 N was applied to the occlusal surface of the first molar. Results: In the case of bicortical screws, von-Mises stress on the screws and screw hole and deflection of the lower central incisor were minimal in type 2 (inverted L pattern with 3 bicortical repositioning screws). In the case of plates, von-Mises stress was minimal in type 8 (fixation 5 mm above the inferior border of the mandible with 1 metal plate and 4 monocortical screws), and deflection of the lower central incisor was minimal in types 6 (fixation 5 mm below the superior border of the mandible with 1 metal plate and 4 monocortical screws) and 7 (fixation 12 mm below the superior border of the mandible with 1 metal plate and 4 monocortical screws). Conclusion: Types 2 and 6 fixation methods provide better stability than the others.

A Dunnione Compound MB12662 Improves Cisplatin-Induced Tissue Injury and Emesis

  • The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of MB12662, a synthetic dunnione compound, on cisplatin-induced vomiting reflexes and intestinal, renal, immune system, and hematopoietic toxicities in ferrets and mice, respectively. Male ICR mice were orally administered MB12662 (5, 10, 25 or 50 mg/kg) for 10 days, during which intraperitoneally challenged with cisplatin (3.5 mg/kg) from day 4 to 7, and sacrificed on day 10 for the pathological examination. Male ferrets were orally administered MB12662 (25, 50 or 100 mg/kg) for 7 days, subcutaneously challenged with cisplatin (5 mg/kg), and monitored for vomiting reflexes and survival of the animals. Four-day injection of cisplatin (3.5 mg/kg) to mice caused body weight loss and degeneration and atrophy of intestinal villi, reducing villi/crypt ratio to a half level of control animals. Cisplatin also induced renal and hepatic toxicities, and depletion of splenocytes and bone marrow progenitor cells. The systemic toxicities including decreased villi/crypt ratio, immune system atrophy, splenocyte depletion, and decreased cellularity in bone marrow were improved by MB12662. Cisplatin (5 mg/kg) induced retching and emetic responses of ferrets, which were remarkably attenuated by MB12662 in a dose-dependent manner. All the ferrets pretreated with MB12662 survived the challenge of cisplatin, in comparison with 40% mortality in vehicle-treated animals, and blood parameters of nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity were markedly recovered. It is expected that MB12662 could be a candidate for the body protection against burden, including emesis, of chemotherapeutic agents.

  • In an electrical tomographic survey using an inclined borehole with a pole-dipole array, we must consider several factors: a singular point associated with zero potential difference, a spatial discrepancy between electrode and nodal point in a model due to a inclined borehole, and a variation of geometric factors in connection with a irregular topography. Singular points which are represented by the normal distance from current source to the ground surface can be represented by serveral regions due to a irregular topography of ground surface. The method of element division can be applied to the region in which the borehole is curved, inclined or the distance between the electrodes is shorter than that of nodal points, because the coordinate of each electrode cannot be assigned directly to the nodal point if several electrodes are in an element. Test on a three-dimensional (3-D) synthetic model produces good images of conductive target and shoves stable convergence.
