  • As 3D solid modeling has been widely used in designing products, solid models of the products are directly used in various applications such as engineering analysis and process planing. However, the fully-detailed solid models may not be necessary in some application. For example, it is often more efficient to use simplified model of part of engineering analysis. Generation of mesh for the complex original model requires a quite amount of time, and the consequence of finite element analysis may not be desirable due to small and detailed geometry in the model. In this paper, a method to simplify solid models of machined part is presented. This method decomposes the delta volume of machined part, and uses the decomposed volumes to simplify the solid model. Since this method directly recognizes the features to be removed from the final model, it is independent of not only design features of specific CAD system, but also designer's design practice of design sequences.

  • This study is about development of Feature-based Solid Modeling system in integrated CAD/CAM environment. Parasolid modeling kernel and HOOPS/3D graphics library was used to develop this system in PC level. System feature library was defined using both procedural and declarative approach method. The raw stock is created by boolean operator using design primitives, and a part is designed that pre-defined feature is removed from the raw stock. This method is called "DSG(Destructive Solid Geometry)" and basic constructive operator of this system. This is not complete system and only the first step to develop Feature-based Solid Modeling System using Parasolid. We will add more powerful functionality and flexible GUI in Windows.n Windows.

  • In this paper, to develop a smart CAD/CAM system for systematically performing from the 3-D solid shape design of products to the CNC cutting operation of products by a machining center, a B-Rep solid modeler is realized based on the half edge data structure. Because the B-Rep solid modeler has the various capabilities related to the solid definition functions such as the creation operation of primitives and the translational and rotational sweep operation, the solid manipulation functions such as the split operation and the Boolean set operation, and the solid inversion function for effectively using the data structure, the 3-D solid shape of products can be easily designed and constructed. Also, besides the automatic generation of CNC code, the B-Rep solid modeler can be used as a powerful tool for realizing the automatic generation of finite elements, the interfer- ence check between solids, the structural design of machine tools and robots and so on.

  • In the Korean fashion industry, 3D printing systems are considered as new technology and a new opportunity. With 3D printers, consumers can be manufacturers and individuals can develop businesses with little upfront capital. In this study, a dress form for the typical Korean women's body shape was developed using 3D technology (3D scanning, 3D modeling, and 3D printing). Ten women with apparel sizes 85-91-160 were selected from 3D body-scan data collected by SizeKorea of 201 women aged 25 to 34 (2010). First, 15 horizontal cross-sections were collected from the 3D scan data of the 10 subjects. Then, inside lines of those cross-sections were drawn at 15-degree intervals, and the lengths were measured. The average of the inside lines was connected to the internal spline curve, and the curves were used as the average cross-sections. The average torso body and the dress form of Korean women were developed into a 3D solid model using a 3D CAD program (Solidworks 2012). An output mockup was printed by the FDM type's 3D printing system (Bonbot 1200, Bonbot 3-H4) using PLA material. The dimensions comparing the 3D solid modeling to the 3D printed mockup of the dress form were measured, and minor differences were between 0.00cm and 0.40cm. In the future, 3D printing systems are expected to be in use for various personalized dress forms.

  • Compound surface modeling is widely used for die cavities and punches. A compound surface is defined in 3-D space by specifying the topological relationship of several anlytic surface elements and a sculptured surface. A constructive solid gemonetry scheme is employed to model the analytic compound surface. the desired compound surface can be accomplished by specifying topological reationship in terms of boolean relations between pimitives and the sculptured surfaces. Additionally, a method is presented for checking and avoiding the tool interference occuued in machining the compound surface. Using this method. the interference of concave, convex, and side region can be checked easily and avoided rpapidly.

  • In this paper, an automated design and 3-D modeling system of an axial fan and a boss for cooling towers was developed. API and parametric design Provided by a commercial solid-modeler are engaged to automate modeling process. Design data of the boss are assumed to be given by a user with design experiences while the fan from the fan design program using three-dimensional flow analysis. An algorithm avoiding the interferences between fans and a boss is developed. The design data are registered on the database not only to remove duplicate design but also to transfer the data to ERP system.

  • In this paper, we propose a continuum mechanics based 3-D beam finite element with cross-sectional discretization allowing for warping displacements. The beam element is directly derived from the assemblage of 3-D solid elements, and this approach results in inherently advanced modeling capabilities of the beam element. In the beam formulation, warping is fully coupled with bending, shearing, and stretching. Consequently, the proposed beam elements can consider free and constrained warping conditions, eccentricities, curved geometries, varying sections, as well as arbitrary cross-sections (including thin/thick-walled, open/closed, and single/multi-cell cross-sections). We then study the modeling and predictive capabilities of the beam elements in twisting beam problems according to geometries, boundary conditions, and cross-sectional meshes. The results are compared with reference solutions obtained by analytical methods and solid and shell finite element models. Excellent modeling capabilities and solution accuracy of the proposed beam element are observed.

  • In manufacturing industry, image scanning technique has made enormous progress in past decades. 3D models have been also very important to continuously monitor the related spatial information for freeform buildings. The process of shape making of 3D scanning is as follows: mesh surface segmentation, NURBS surface generation, and parametric solid model generation. We will review the process and applying process. Especially in the construction industry, 3D data collection by laser scanning has become an high quality 3D models. Therefore, in this research, we have an effort to review construction of reverse design process for freeform envelope using 3D scanning. The technology enables many 3D shape engineering and design parameterization of reverse engineering in the construction site.

  • This paper is to model a 3D-shape product applying mathematically the data acquired from a 3D scanner and using an Automatic Design Program. The research studied in the reverse engineering up to now has been developed continuously and surprisingly. However, forming 3D-shape solid models in CAE and CAM, based on the research, the study leaves much to be desired. Especially, analyses and studies reverse-designing automatically using measured data after manufacturing. Consequently, we are going to acquire geometric data using an 3D scanner in this study with which we will open a new field of reverse engineering by a program whic hcan design a 3D-shape solid model in a CAD-based program automatically.
