Shape Optimization for Lightweight of the Metal 3D Printing Based Hybrid Machining Center (금속 적층 기반 하이브리드 머시닝센터의 경량화를 위한 형상 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • In the fourth industrial revolution, the demand for metal three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is rapidly increasing. Metal 3D printing is an efficient method for manufacturing products because the method reduces material waste compared to subtractive manufacturing. In addition, products with complex shapes, such as turbine blades, can be easily produced using metal 3D printing because the method offers a high degree of freedom. However, due to the long production time of metal 3D printing, mass production is impossible, and post-processing is necessary due to its low precision. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new hybrid process that can efficiently process metals and to develop a metal 3D-printing-based hybrid processing system technology to secure high processing precision and manufacture complex shapes. In this study, the structural stability of a metal 3D printer based hybrid machining center was analyzed through structural analysis before its development. In addition, we proposed a design modification that can reduce the weight and increase the stiffness of the hybrid machining center by performing shape lightning based on the structural analysis results.

3D Visualization of Discrete Event Simulation and Its Applications in Virtual Manufacturing

  • This paper presents a new approach to create 3D visualization from discrete simulation results. This approach connects discrete event simulation directly to 3D animation with its novel methods that analyze and convert discrete simulation results into animation events to trigger 3D animation. In addition, it constructs a 3D animation framework for the visualization of discrete simulation results. This framework supports the reuse of both the existing 3D animation objects and behavior components, and allows the rapid development of new 3D animation objects by users with no special knowledge in computer graphics. This approach has been implemented with the software component technology. As an application in virtual manufacturing, visualizations of an electronics assembly factory are also provided in the paper to demonstrate the performance of this new approach.

  • Recently, 3D printer technologies have been used in many research efforts for high precision manufacturing. In particular, the rapid prototyping technology has been developing rapidly, because it can be manufactured in a short time with a 3D designed shape. This paper relates to the production characteristics of the straight bevel gear designed using a 3D print using the PolyJet method. The characteristics of a 3D printed straight bevel gear were compared with a machined straight bevel gear. The accuracy of the produced straight bevel gear was evaluated by backlash, meshing pattern, face angle, root angle, and surface roughness.

  • To date, biomedical application of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology remains one of the most important research topics and business targets. A wide range of approaches have been attempted using various 3D printing systems with general materials and specific biomaterials. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the biomedical applications using 3D printing techniques, such as surgical tool, medical device, prosthesis, and tissue engineering scaffold. Compared to the other applications of 3D printed products, the scaffold fabrication should be performed with careful selection of bio-functional materials. In particular, we describe how the biomaterials can be processed into 3D printed scaffold and applied to tissue engineering area.

  • The basic principle of the product manufacturing technology using the 3D printing technique materializes the material including the high molecular substance or plastic and metallic dust, and etc. the product into the laminate additive manufacturing according to the design diagram gradually. It is applied to the various industrial field including the field of food division, field of home appliances, field of medicine, field of mechanical department and construction, etc.. The global development case of 3D printing technique is the next. This study described global technology and market trends. Afterward, 3D printing technique manages the important role when it exceeds the product manufacturing view just and is grafted with the various technology including the biotechnology, nanotechnology, and etc. and it improves the quality of the human life.

Cooling and Deformation Analysis of a Layered Road in a FDM Type 3D Printing Through Thermal-structural Coupled Simulation

  • The additive manufacturing technology, also called 3D printing, is growing fast. There are several methods for 3D printing. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) type 3D printing is the most popular method because it is simple and inexpensive. Moreover, it can be used for printing various thermoplastic materials. However, it contains the cooling of layered road and causes thermal shrinkage. Thermal shrinkage should be controlled to obtain high-quality products. In this study, temperature distribution and cooling behavior of a layered road with cooling are studied through computer simulation. The thermal shrinkage of the layered road was simulated using the calculated temperature distribution with time. Shape variation of the layered road was predicted as cooling proceeded. Stress between the bed and the layered road was also predicted.This stress was considered as the detaching stress of the layered road from the bed. The simulations were performed for various thermal conductivities and temperatures of the layered road, bed temperature, and chamber temperature of a 3D printer. The simulation results provide detailed information about the layered road for FDM type 3D printing under operational conditions.

  • The 3D printing of electronics has been a major application topics in additive manufacturing technology for a decade. In this paper, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology for 3D electronics is studied to supply electric power to its inner circuit. The principle of WPT is that electric power is induced at the recipient antenna coil under an alternating magnetic field. Importantly, the efficiency of WPT does rely on the design of the antenna coil shape. In 3D printed electronics, a flat antenna that can be placed on the printed plane within a layer of a 3D printed part is used, but provided a different antenna response compared to that of a conventional PCB antenna for NFC. This paper investigates the WPT response characteristics of a WPT antenna for 3D printed electronics associated with changes in its design elements. The effects of changing the antenna curvature and the gap between the wires were analyzed through experimental tests.

Rapid Manufacturing of 3D Thin-walled Products using Plastics and Metals (플라스틱과 금속재료를 이용한 3 차원 박벽 제품의 쾌속 제작)

  • High-speed machining (HSM) with excellent quality and dimensional accuracy has been widely used to create 3D structures of metal and plastics. However, the high-speed machining process is not suitable for the rapid realization of 3D thin-walled product because it consumes considerably long time in fixturing process of a work piece. In this paper, an effective rapid manufacturing process is proposed to fabricate 3D thin-walled products directly using HSM, phase change filling and ultrasonic welding. The filling process is useful to hold the thin-walled product during the machining step. The ultrasonic welding process is introduced to make one piece product from two piece parts that are machined by HSM and filling process. The proposed rapid manufacturing (RM) process has been shown that the RM process enables to fabricate the 3D thin-walled products using ABS plastics and aluminum metals from 3D CAD data to functional parts.

  • Computer aided process planning (CAPP) keeps an important role between the design and manufacturing engineering processes. A CAPP system is a digital link between a computer aided design (CAD) model and manufacturing instructions. CAPP have been researched and applied in manufacturing filed, however, one manufacturing area where CAPP has not been extensively researched is rapid prototyping (RP). RP is a technique for creating directly a three dimensional CAD data into a physical prototype. RP enables to build physical models automatically and to use to reduce the time for the product development cycle as well as to improve the final quality of the designed product. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is one kind of RP that creates three-dimensional objects from CAD models. The paper presents a computer aided process planning system for printing medical products. 3D printing has been used to solve complex medical problems such as surgical instruments, bioengineered products, medical implants, and surgical guides.
