Analysis of the micro diffuser/nozzle pump performance of steady states using similitude model and simulations (상사 모델과 전산 수치 해석을 이용한 diffuser/nozzle pump 의 정상 상태에 대한 연구)

  • Recently, as the semiconductor production technology develops, there has been growing interest in the cooling system using micro fluid pump. Among the various types of micro fluid pump, the valve-less diffuser/nozzle has been extensively studied in recent years. However, the flat-walled diffuser/nozzle flow has not been clearly looked into due to its non-linear characteristics. In this paper, the flow characteristics of the flat-walled diffuser/nozzle have been analyzed using similitude model and simulations. Similitude models are designed so that the flow pattern is same as that of 1/10 scale flow by using high viscous fluid as working fluid. The results are compared to the simulations. It is shown that the flow characteristics of 2D simulation are different from 3D simulations at high Re region, and the measured pump efficiency is highly dependent on the pressure difference as well as the channel geometry. From these results, the desirable conditions for the efficient pump is discussed.

Flow-driven rotor simulation of vertical axis tidal turbines: A comparison of helical and straight blades

  • In this study, flow-driven rotor simulations with a given load are conducted to analyze the operational characteristics of a vertical-axis Darrieus turbine, specifically its self-starting capability and fluctuations in its torque as well as the RPM. These characteristics are typically observed in experiments, though they cannot be acquired in simulations with a given tip speed ratio (TSR). First, it is shown that a flow-driven rotor simulation with a two-dimensional (2D) turbine model obtains power coefficients with curves similar to those obtained in a simulation with a given TSR. 3D flow-driven rotor simulations with an optimal geometry then show that a helical-bladed turbine has the following prominent advantages over a straight-bladed turbine of the same size: an improvement of its self-starting capabilities and reduced fluctuations in its torque and RPM curves as well as an increase in its power coefficient from 33% to 42%. Therefore, it is clear that a flow-driven rotor simulation provides more information for the design of a Darrieus turbine than a simulation with a given TSR before experiments.

  • A semi-solid forming has a lot of advantages compared to the die casting. squeeze casting and conventional forging. therefore, semi-solid forming process is now becoming industrial interest for the production of metal components and metal matrix composites. However the material behaviour in the semi-solid temperature range is not sufficiently known although it controls the whole process through forces and geometry evolutions because the behaviour of metal slurries is complex. The semi-solid materials(SSMs) fabricated under electric-magnetic stirring condition is necessary to be applicated in forming process. A reheating conditions were studied with the reheating time holding time and reheating temperatures. The microstructure of SSM(specimen size : d39${\times}$h85) at the condition of heating time 10min and heating temperature 590${\circ}C$ is the most globular and finest one. The microstructure of SSM(specimen size : d76${\times}$h60) reheated under the three step reheating conditions is most globular and finest.

  • A higher order panel method based on B-spline representation for both the geometry and the velocity potential is developed for the solution of the flow around two-dimensional lifting bodies. Unlike Lee/Kerwin, who placed multiple control points on each panel and solved the overdetermined system of equation by the least square approach, the present method places only as many number of control points as required by the unknowns of the problem. Especially, a null pressure jump Kutta condition at the trailing edge is found to be effective in stabilizing the solution process and in predicting the correct solution. The new approach, is validated to be accurate through comparison with the analytic solution for a 2-D airfoil and to be less time-consuming due to fewer number of panels required than that used in Lee/Kerwin.

  • This paper presents a sensor fusion method to recognize a cylindrical object a CCD camera, a laser slit beam and ultrasonic sensors on a pan/tilt device. For object recognition with a vision sensor, an active light source projects a stripe pattern of light on the object surface. The 2D image data are transformed into 3D data using the geometry between the camera and the laser slit beam. The ultrasonic sensor uses an ultrasonic transducer array mounted in horizontal direction on the pan/tilt device. The time of flight is estimated by finding the maximum correlation between the received ultrasonic pulse and a set of stored templates - also called a matched filter. The distance of flight is calculated by simply multiplying the time of flight by the speed of sound and the maximum amplitude of the filtered signal is used to determine the face angle to the object. To determine the position and the radius of cylindrical objects, we use a statistical sensor fusion. Experimental results show that the fused data increase the reliability for the object recognition.

  • We investigate the rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes concatenated with hierarchical QAM for designing a cross-layer unequal error protection scheme for H.264 coded sequences. We first divide the H.264 encoded video slices into three priority classes based on their relative importance. We investigate the system constraints and propose an optimization formulation to compute the optimal parameters of the proposed system for the given source significance information. An upper bound to the significance-weighted bit error rate in the proposed system is derived as a function of system parameters, including the code rate and geometry of the constellation. An example is given with design rules for H.264 video communications and 3.5-4 dB PSNR improvement over existing RCPC based techniques for AWGN wireless channels is shown through simulations.

  • Recently, the development of aerospace and automobile industries brought new technological challenges, related to the growing complexity of products and new geometry models. High speed machining using 5-Axis milling machine is widely used for 3D sculptured surface parts. 5-axis milling of turbine blade generates the vibration, deflection and twisting caused from thin and cantilever shape. So, the surface roughness and the waviness of workpiece are not good. In this paper, The effects of cutter orientation and lead/tilt angle in 5-Axis high speed ball end-milling of turbine blade were investigated to improve the geometric accuracy and surface integrity. The experiments were performed at lead/tilt angle $15^{\circ}$ of workpiece with four cutter directions such as horizontal outward, horizontal inward, vertical outward, and vertical inward. Workpiece deflection, surface roughness and machined surface were measured with various cutter orientations such as cutting direction, and lead/tilt angle. The results show that when 5-axis machining of turbine blade, the best cutting strategy is horizontal inward direction with tilt angle.   • In order to reduce weight of a high-speed railroad vehicle, the main body has been manufactured by hollow section extrusion using aluminum alloys. A porthole die has utilized for the hollow section extrusion process, which causes complicated die geometry and flow characteristics. Design of porthole die is very difficult due to such a complexity. The three-dimensional finite element analysis for hollow section is also an arduous job from the viewpoint of appropriate mesh construction and tremendous computation time. In the present work, mismatching refinement, an efficient domain decomposition method with different mesh density for each subdomain, is implemented for the analysis of the hollow section extrusion process. In addition, a modified grid-based approach with the surface element layer is utilized lot three-dimensional mesh generation of a complicated shape with hexahedral elements. The effects of porthole design are discussed through the simulation for extrusion of an underframe part of a railroad vehicle. An experiment has also been carried out for the comparison. Comparing the velocity distribution at the outlet with the thickness variation of the extruded part, it is concluded that the analysis results can provide reliable measures whether the die design is acceptable to obtain uniform part thickness. The analysis results are then successfully reflected on the industrial porthole die design.

Characterization of electron beam (EB) welds for SUS310S

  • In this work, SUS310S used for valve plate assembly was electron beam (EB) welded to determine the influence of the parametric conditions on the characteristics of the weld and to minimize porosity and micro-fissures among others. The evolution in the weld geometry and microstructure was examined as a function of the process conditions such as beam current and focusing current under a constant welding speed and accelerating voltage. The integrity of the EB welds in SUS310S was examined for defects (e.g. cracking, porosity, etc.), adequate penetration depth, and tolerable weld width deviation for the various welding conditions. Optical microscopy (OM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) for the cross section analysis of the electron beam welded SUS310S were utilized. The tensile strength and hardness were analyzed for the mechanical properties of the EB weld. At the 6 kV accelerating voltage, it was determined that a satisfactory penetration depth and desirable weld width deviation requires a beam current of 30 mA and a focusing current of 0.687 A at the welding speed of 25 mm/sec.

Investigation on Reaction Pathways for ZnO Formation from Diethylzinc and Water during Chemical Vapor Deposition

  • A computational study of the reactions between Zn-containing species, the products of the thermal decomposition of diethylzinc (DEZn) and water was investigated. The Zn-containing species – $C_2H_5)_2,\;HZnC_2H_5,\;and\;(ZnC_2H_5)_2$ – were assumed to react with water during ZnO metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the level of B3LYP/6-311G(d) were employed for the geometry optimization and thermodynamic property evaluation. As a result dihydroxozinc, $Zn(OH)_2$, was the most probable reaction product common for all three Zn-containing species. A further clustering of $Zn(OH)_2$ was investigated to understand the initial stage of ZnO film deposition. In experiments, the reactions of DEZn and water were examined by in-situ Raman scattering in a specially designed MOCVD reactor. Although direct evidence of $Zn(OH)_2$ was not observed, some relevant reaction intermediates were successfully detected to support the validity of the gas phase reaction pathways proposed in the computational study.
