In This study develops a quasi-three dimensional numerical model of wave driven coastal currents with accounting the effects of the wave-current interaction and the surface rollers. In the wave model, the current effects on wave breaking and energy dissipation are taken into account as well as the wave diffraction effect. The surface roller associated with wave breaking was modeled based on a modification of the equations by Dally and Brown (1995) and Larson and Kraus (2002). Furthermore, the quasi-three dimensional model, which based on Navier-Stokes equations, was modified in association with the surface roller effect, and solved using frictional step method. The model was validated by data sets obtained during experiments on the Large Scale Sediment Transport Facility (LSTF) basin and the Hazaki Oceanographical Research Station (HORS). Then, a model test against detached breakwater was carried out to investigate the performance of the model around coastal structures. Finally, the model was applied to Akasaki port to verify the hydrodynamics around coastal structures. Good agreements between computations and measurements were obtained with regard to the cross-shore variation in waves and currents in nearshore and surf zone.
In order to know the characteristics of attenuation of coda wave in the Kyungsang Sedimetary Basin, quality faclity factor for coda wave (coda Q) is estimated from the earthquake data recorded in the KIGAM local seismic network. Thesingle scattering model for coda wave generation is adopted is adopted in estimating coda Q. In the present study, coda Q(Qc)is estimated in the range of $\alpha$=1.5~3.0, where $\alpha$ denotes the normalized time to S-wave travel time and expressed in terms of frequency (f). The deduced function in the range of 1 to 25 Hz is Qc=36.8283$f^{1.15095}$ which represents the strong dependence of coda Q on frequency. It is found that the difference of Qc between U-D, N-S, and E-W components is negligible. This fact suports the back scattering therory that coda wave originates from scattered waves by randomly distributed heterogenities in the crust On the other hand, it is observed that the coda Q increases with increasing epicentral distence. This observation suggests that QC increases with depth.

In this study, we investigated the effect of wave height in coastal areas using discrete wavelet transform in Taehwa river basin in Ulsan. Through the decomposition result of tide data using daubechies level 7 wavelet and Curve Fitting Function, we confirmed that detail components of d3 and d4 were semidiurnal and diurnal components and approximation component(a6) was the long period of lunar fortnight constituent. The decomposed tide data in six level was divided into tide component with periodicity and wave component with non-periodicity using autocorrelation function and fourier transform. Finally, we confirmed that the tide component is consisted 66% and wave component is consisted 34%. So, we quantitatively assessed the effect of wave on coastal areas. The result could be used for coastal flood risk management considering the effect of wave.
In order to investigate the velocity structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula, exploded seismic signals were recorded for 120 s along a 294-km WNW-ESE line and 150 s along a 335-km NNW-SSE line in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Velocity tomograms were derived from inverting P-wave and S-wave first arrival times. The raypaths indicate several midcrust interfaces. The shallowest one is at the approximate depth of $2{\sim}3\;km$ with refraction velocities of approximately Vp=6.0 and Vs=3.5 km/s, respectively. The second one of $15{\sim}17\;km$ depth has refraction velocities of approximately Vp=7.1 and Vs=3.7 km/s, respectively. The deepest significant interface varies in depth from 30.8 km to 36.1 km. The critically refracting Vp of $7.8{\sim}8.1\;km/s$ and Vs of $4.2{\sim}4.6\;km/s$ along this interface which may correspond to the Moho discontinuity. The velocity tomograms show (1) existence of a low-velocity zone centered at $6{\sim}7\;km$ depth under the Okchon fold belt and the Yeongnam massif, (2) extension of the Yeongdon fault down to greater than 10 km, and (3) existence of high-velocity materials under the Gyeongsan basin less than 4.2 km thick.
In December 2006, 2D surface streamer and Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) data were acquired in the Ulleung basin in Korea where strong Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSR) were shown as a result of 2D and 3D multichannel (MCS) reflection survey. The aim of this study is to provide another reliable source for estimating P wave velocity around BSR depth using OBS data in addition to velocity information from 2D surface seismic data. Four OBSs were deployed and four 20-km shot lines which pass two OBSs respectively were designed. To derive P wave velocity profile, interactive interval velocity analysis using ${\tau}$-p trajectory matching method (Kumar, 2005) was used for OBS data and semblance analysis was used for surface data. The seismic profiles cross the OBS instruments in two different directions yield recordings for four different azimuths. This raised the confidence for the results. All velocity profiles in the vicinity of BSR depth of four OBS sites show almost definite velocity changes which we could consider as upper BSR and free gas layer. Making comparison between velocity from OBS and that from 2D seismic semblance velocity analysis gives consistency in result.

The interest in renewable energy is increasing due to the depletion of fossil fuels. In particular, active research on wave power, which is highly predictable and abundant, is being conducted. The coaxial accelerator-type wave power generator used in this study was designed to improve the power generation efficiency by converting bidirectional linear motion into a rotational force. In an offshore engineering basin, waves were generated, and case tests were performed according to the wave period and wave height. The experimental results were verified by the theoretical method related to the frequency response, and the overall trend was confirmed to be consistent. These results are expected to be useful in estimating the power of wave generators and designing parameters to improve the efficiency of wave energy in the design stage before manufacturing. In addition, the manufacturer can predict the wave energy efficiency of wave generators, which can reduce the development time and cost by preventing trial and error processes.

Recently, the rapid development of GIS technology has made it possible to handle a various data associated with spatially hydrological parameters with their attribute information. Therefore, there has been a shift in focus from lumped runoff models to distributed runoff models, as the latter can consider temporal and spatial variations of discharge. In this research, a distributed rainfall-runoff model based on physical kinematic wave for analysis of surface and river flow was used to simulate temporal and spatial distribution of long-term discharge. The snowfall and melting process model based on Hydro-BEAM was developed, and various hydrological parameters for input data of the model was extracted from basic GIS data such as DEM, land cover and soil map. The developed model was applied for the Shonai River basin(532) in Japan, which has sufficient meteorological and hydrological data, and displayed precise runoff results to be compared to the hydrograph.

In this study, we newly proposed 3-D nonlinear wave driver utilizing the Navier-Stokes Eq. the numerical integration of which is carried out using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics), an internal wave generation with the source function of Gaussian distribution and an energy absorbing layer. For the verification of new 3-D nonlinear wave driver, we numerically simulate the sloshing problem within a parabolic water basin triggered by a Gaussian hump and uniformly inclined water surface by Thacker (1981). It turns out that the qualitative behavior of sloshing caused by relaxing the external force which makes a free surface convex or uniformly inclined is successfully simulated even though phase error is visible and an inundation height shrinks as numerical simulation more proceeds. For the more severe test, we also simulate the nonlinear shoaling and refraction over uniform beach of wedge shape. It is shown that numerically simulated waves are less refracted than the linear counterpart by Hamiltonian ray theory due to nonlinearity, energy dissipation at the bottom and side walls, energy loss induced by breaking, and the hydraulic jump occurring when breaking waves encounter a down-rush by the preceding wave.

A newly designed floating breakwater made of Polyethylene with considering the introduction of new material for being harmony with environment and stability of the floater is developed for a marine ranching. In this study, the new concept in which incident wave dissipates its energy due to the vortex shedding by passing through the pipes and sheets is selected for wave breaking mechanism. Model experiment in order to te st its capability is performed for the regular and irregular waves in ocean engineering basin. Good capability to break the incident wave within the 6 seconds of period and 1 m of height is shown. Breaking efficiency for long period wave is not so good in regular and irregular wave. The results of this study will contribute to the design and construction of the floating breakwater.

The mode shapes of a segmented hull model towed in a model basin were predicted using both the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and cross random decrement technique. The proper orthogonal decomposition, which is also known as Karhunen-Loeve decomposition, is an emerging technology as a useful signal processing technique in structural dynamics. The technique is based on the fact that the eigenvectors of a spatial coherence matrix become the mode shapes of the system under free and randomly excited forced vibration conditions. Taking advantage of the simplicity of POD, efforts have been made to reveal the mode shapes of vibrating flexible hull under random wave excitation. First, the segmented hull model of a 400 K ore carrier with 3 flexible connections was towed in a model basin under different sea states and the time histories of the vertical bending moment at three different locations were measured. The measured response time histories were processed using the proper orthogonal decomposition, eventually to obtain both the first and second vertical vibration modes of the flexible hull. A comparison of the obtained mode shapes with those obtained using the cross random decrement technique showed excellent correspondence between the two results.
