  • One of the two spindles in the X-lift fractured suddenly during normal operation. The fracture occurred at the notch where the bending moment might be the maximum. Macrofractographic features associated with rotating-bending fatigue are evident on the fracture surface. The 3-D finite element analysis of the X-lift reveals that the spindle rotated under bending. The measured surface strain of the spindle varies cyclically as the spindle rotates. It supports that the spindle rotated under bending. The X-lift is not perfectly symmetrical with respect to both the horizontal and the vertical plane. The slightly unsymmetrical deformation can cause the bending of the spindle.

  • Nonlinear seal friction in pneumatic cylinders can impede the performance of pneumatic systems designed for high precision positioning with favorable high speed actuation. The behaviour of an elastomeric piston seals in high speed pneumatic cylinders is analyzed by nonlinear finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The contact pressures, stress and strain distributions and frictional forces of the squeeze type piston seal are simulated with variation of the seal radial installed interference, the operating pressures, friction coefficients and piston rod velocities. The nonlinear finite element model of the squeeze type piston seal is used to predict deformation of a seal, friction force and contact pressure distributions.

  • In this study, aeroelastic performance analyses have been conducted for a 10MW class wind turbine blade model Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems.

  • An underground research facility (KURF) is under construction at KAERI for the in situ studies related to the validation of a HLW disposal system. For the safe construction and long-term researches at KURF, mechanical stability of the facility should be evaluated. In this study, 3D mechanical stability analysis using the rock mass properties determined from various in situ as well as laboratory tests was carried out. From the analysis, it was possible to predict the rock deformation, stress concentration, and plastic zone developed before and after the excavation. A test blasting was performed to characterize the site dependent dynamic response, which can be used for the prediction of the blasting impact on the facilities in KAERI.

  • This investigation describes and analyses the experimental results proper to the penetration of Al5052-H34 alloy plates of thickness 6, 12 and 16mm(T/D=1, 2, 3) by 5.56mm ball projectiles over the velocity range 350-750㎧. All the high velocity impact tests were carried out at normal impact angle, i.e. zero obliquity. The experimental results presented the variation of depth of penetration, bulge height and diameter, plugged length and diameter with the velocity fur tests on each plate of a given thickness in order to determine the deformation shapes of 5.56mm ball projectiles and targets. Also the protection ballistic limit($V_50$) tests were conducted.

  • Effect of processing condition on the hot extrusion of Al-Zn-Mg-Sc alloy was investigated. For this purpose, hot compression test and FE-simulation were conducted via Thermecmaster-Z and DEFORM-3D, respectively. The microstructure evolution during hot extrusion and post heat-treatment was investigated and deformation mechanisms were analyzed by constructing processing map. FE-simulation results show that the temperature difference between container and billet has considerable influence on the final shape of extruded T-shape bar. The relation between applied load and processing time was predicted by the FE-analysis as well as punch speed vs. stroke chart.

  • The storing ability of information of optical disks directly depends on the physical property of recording unit cells. It means that the degradation of optical disks ultimately causes the loss of the physical and chemical properties of recording unit cells and leads also information, too. We investigated the degradation and life time of optical disks which tell us the longevity of the preservation of information. Optical disks were aged using the accelerated aging system and studied by optical reflectivity spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy(AFM), and the preservation environment of electronic media in National central library of Korea also were analysed. Results show that the double reflective coated optical disks have good preservation of recording information but revealed some deformation of dye area in the AFM images. It means that we should include the mechanical and chemical degradation of the optical disks in the life time expectation evaluation.

  • In this study, failure behavior of piercing plug for seamless tube manufacturing process was studied. Three different kinds of passed piercing plugs (10, 90, 215 times) were prepared. The shape deformation of the passed piercing plugs was observed by 3D coordinate measuring machine, and the oxidized layer on the surface of piercing plug was observed by optical microscopy. The length reduction of piercing plug presented at 215 times passed plug. It was found that the oxidized layer consisted of outer scale, inner scale and internal oxidation layers, and the inner scale layer had vertical cracks, and interfaces had horizontal cracks. We proposed the failure mechanism of piercing plug during seamless tube manufacturing process based on the formation of vertical and horizontal crack.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of stress transfer around carven due to cavern size and rock joint properties by laboratory model test. In order to perform this study, eight different scaled model tests were carried out according to excavation stage. The limited numerical analysis were also performed to verify the model test results. The amount of stress transfer around the cavern is increased and then decreased by longitudinal arching effect according to tunnel excavation. It is founded that the stress developed around the cavern during excavation is increased when the cavern size and joint orientation are increased. It is also investigated that shear behaviour (such as stress, deformation) developed around cavern is considerably depended on the characteristic of fill material, dip and direction of joints. It is suggested that the behaviour will be verified throughout the 3D numerical prediction.
