  • In this paper, we present an interactive 3D character modeling and animation including a data management tool for editing the animation. It includes an animation editor for changing animation sequences according to the modified structure of 3D object in the object structure editor. The animation tool has the feature that it can produce motion data independently of any modeling tool including our modeling tool. Differently from conventional 3D graphics tools that model objects based on geometrically calculated data, our tool models 3D geometric and animation data by approximating to the real object using 2D image interactively. There are some applications that do not need precise representation, but an easier way to obtain an approximated model looking similar to the real object. Our tool is appropriate for such applications. This paper has focused on the data management for enhancing the automatin and convenience when editing a motion or when mapping a motion to the other character.

  • In the initial stages of ship design, designers represent geometry, arrangement, and dimension of hull structures with 2D geometric primitives such as points, lines, arcs, and drawing symbols. However, these design information(‘2D geometric primitives’) defined in the drawing sheet require more intelligent translation processes by the designers in the next design stages. Thus, the loss of design semantics could be occurred and following design processes could be delayed. In the initial design stages, it is not easy to adopt commercial 3D CAD systems, which have been developed f3r being used in detail and production design stages, because the 3D CAD systems require detailed input for geometry definition. In this study, a semantic product model data structure was proposed, and an initial structural CAD system was developed based on the proposed data structure. Contents(‘product model data and design knowledges’) of the proposed data structure are filled with minimal input of the designers, and then 3D solid model and production material information can be automatically generated as occasion demands. Finally, the applicability of the proposed semantic product model data structure and the developed initial structural CAD system was verified through application to deadweight 300,000ton VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier) product modeling procedure.

  • In this paper a two-step algorithm is proposed to efficiently generate rebar elements from 3D CAD data in the context of CAD/CAE data transfer. The first step is an algorithm to identify various type rebar objects and their attributes by analyzing 3D CAD data in STEP format, which is one of the international data standards. The second algorithmic step is a procedure to generate one-dimensional rebar elements from the object data made through the first step for finite element analysis or other CAE tasks. Successful rebar element data generation from real 3D CAD data for a reinforced concrete structure shows the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

  • Three-dimensional topological data is essential for 3D modeling and application such as emergency management and 3D network analysis. This paper reviewed current 3D topological data model and developed a method to construct 3D topological node-relation data structure from 2D computer aided design (CAD) data. The method needed two steps with medial axis-transformation and topological node-relation algorithms. Using a medial-axis transformation algorithm, the first step is to extract skeleton from wall data that was drawn polygon or double line in a CAD data. The second step is to build a topological node-relation structure by converting rooms to nodes and the relations between rooms to links. So, links represent adjacency and connectivity between nodes (rooms). As a result, with the conversion method 3D topological data for micro-level sub-unit of each building can be easily constructed from CAD data that are commonly used to design a building as a blueprint.

  • Primary purpose of the system developed in this study is 3-D seismic data processing system for subsurface structure imaging and this system is developed in PC based on Linux for lower-cost computer. Basic data processing modules are originated from SU (Seismic Unix) which is widely used in 2-D seismic data processing and auxilious modules are developed for 3-D data processing. The system which is constructed by using these data processing modules is designed to GUI (Graphic User Interface) in order that one can easily control and for this purpose, GTK (Gimp Tool KiT) conventionally adapted in producing Linux application.

  • This study analyzes various factors affecting a firm's investments, focusing on both a firm's ownership structure and CEO's incentives. While previous empirical works focus on various financial data in order to test the Schumpeterian Hypotheses, this paper is using various ownership structure data as well as financial data. Empirical results show that the greater a firm's CEO has the company's own stock, the less he spends in R&D investments. The main empirical results of this study is in line with past empirical studies on various markets outside of Korea.

  • Traditional two-dimensional (2D) interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data utilizes only transverse magnetic (TM)-mode data, because 2D inversion of transverse electric (TE)-mode data results in spurious features when 3D structures exist in the subsurface. The application of a 3D inversion algorithm to a single MT profile can reduce contamination due to off-profile anomalies and help us to incorporate TE-mode data in the interpretation. In this study, we conduct 2D and 3D inversions of MT data observed along two lines in Jeju Island. First, we invert apparent resistivities and phases in the TM and TE modes separately. Then, we perform 2D joint inversion of both TM- and TE-mode data and 3D inversion of both Zxy- and Zyx-mode data corresponding to TE- and TM-mode data in 2D. The resistivity images derived from all four data show that the geoelectrical structure in Jeju Island is a three-layered earth with the resistive-conductive-resistive stratigraphy within a depth of 5 km. The 3D inversion does not produce clear anomalies in the reconstructed profile image, while all of 2D do. This attributed to the possibility that 2D inversion results are distorted by exiting off-profile 3D anomalies in Jeju. With 3D inversion of 2D profile MT data, we can deduce more reliable results that are not seriously distorted by off-profile 3D anomalies.

  • Resistivity inversion result may be distorted if the seepage line fluctuation within central core with the change of reservoir water level as well as the conductivity of the reservoir water is not taken into consideration because the reservoir dike is composed of three-dimensional (3D) resistivity structure. Consequently, to accurately analyze the resistivity changes inside the reservoir dike according to the change of reservoir water level, 3D electrical resistivity modeling for the 2D survey line considering topography and physical properties of dam components was carried out. In addition, 2D inversion was performed with the simulated 2D resistivity data for a given 3D model in order to compare it with the inversion result of real field data. For 283 reservoirs in Korea, 2D inversion results for the simulated 2D data and field 2D resistivity data were compared. Finally, the reservoirs with an inversion ratio of 50% or less were selected as reservoirs that require further precise investigation.

  • There has been a number of attempts to apply 3D CAD data created in the design stage of product life cycle to various applications of the other stages in related industries. But, 3D CAD data requires a large amount of computing resources for data processing, and it is not suitable for post applications such as distributed collaboration, marketing tool, or Interactive Electronic Technical Manual because of the design information security problem and the license cost. Therefore, various lightweight visualization formats and application systems have been suggested to overcome these problems. However, most of these lightweight formats are dependent on the companies or organizations which suggested them and cannot be shared with each other. In addition, product structure information is not represented along with the product geometric information. In this paper, we define a dataset called prod-X3D(Enhanced X3D Dataset for Web-based Visualization of 3D CAD Product Model) based on the international standard graphic format, X3D, which can represent the structure information as well as the geometry information of a product, and propose a translation method from 3D CAD data to an prod-X3D.

  • As ship condition inspection technology has been developed, research on collecting, analyzing, and diagnosing condition information has become active. In ships, related research has been conducted, such as analyzing, detecting, and classifying major hull failures such as cracks and corrosion using 2D and 3D data information. However, for geometric deformation such as indents and bulges, 2D data has limitations in detection, so 3D data is needed to utilize spatial feature information. In this study, we aim to detect hull structural deformation positions. It builds a specimen based on actual hull structure deformation and acquires a point cloud from a model scanned with a 3D scanner. In the obtained point cloud, deformation(outliers) is found with a combination of RANSAC algorithms that find the best matching model in the Octree data structure and dataset.
