A commercial CFD code is used to compute the 3-D viscous flow field within the inlet flow concentrator of the newly developed AHU (Air Handling Unit). To improve the performance of the AHU, the inlet air needs to be gradually accelerated to the fan's annular velocity without causing turbulence or flow separation. Three major geometric parameters were selected to specify the inlet shape of the AHU. The performance of the AHU could be measured by the inlet and outlet flow uniformity and the total pressure loss through the inlet flow concentrator. Several numerical calculations were carried out to determine the influence of the geometric parameters on the performance of the AHU. The best geometric values were decided to have efficient inlet shape with analyzing CFD calculation results.
The accurate prediction of leakage flow through the brush element of brush seal at the steam turbine is important to find optimum design parameters for increasing an efficiency. In this study, CFD analysis method using commercial software FLUENT is proposed to predict leakage through the brush element. Since the brush element has a complex three-dimensional shape with many bristle assemblies, it is difficult to analyze the flow field. Therefore, if the brush element is assumed to be porous medium region, the analysis time can be shortened. Two determination methods of resistance coefficients of the Darcian porous medium equation are suggested. By comparing the 2D and 3D CFD analysis results for the leakage of the brush element using the two resistance coefficient determination methods, the effectiveness of the analysis for the porous medium assumption is proved.
In order to design a wave energy generating system, a 6-DOF analysis technique is applied to CFD analysis on of a floating body and the behavior is interpreted according to the nature of the incoming waves. A spring constant is adopted to control the motion of multi floating bodies and to calculate the total average power absorption. Three cases of different wavelengths namely 20D, 30D and 40D have been modeled to analyze the total average power absorption. The average power absorption not only varies with the position of the floating body but also varies with wavelength. From the results obtained, it is concluded that the maximum total average power absorption is 9W approximately in wavelength 30D and the minimum total average power absorption is 4.3W approximately in wavelength 40D.
Here has been examined a 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in order to investigate the performance analysis of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells with serpentine flow fields. The present CFD model considers the isothermal transport phenomena in a fuel cell involving mass, momentum transport, electrode kinetics, and potential fields. Co-current flow patterns for a PEMFC are considered for various geometries in the single straight cell. Current density distribution from the calculated distribution of oxygen and hydrogen mass fractions has been determined, where the activation overpotential has been also calculated within anode and cathode. CFD results showed that profiles differ from those simulations subjected to each the calculated activation overpotential. It is interesting that the present serpentine flow field shows the specific distribution of current density with respect to the aspect ratio of depth to width and the ratio of reaction area for various serpentine geometries. Simulation results were considered reasonable with the other CFD results reported in literature and global comparisons of the PEMFC model.

In this study, a study was conducted to localize a large aluminum turbo fan used for tank powerpack. The turbo fan was scanned with a 3D scanner and then 3D modeling was performed. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were performed from the performance conditions of the fan, and structural analysis was performed using the pressure data obtained from CFD. The fan was reduced to 1/5 size by applying the geometric similarity. A 1/5 size fan has a honeycomb structure inserted into the front shroud and back shroud to reduce the weight by 5.3%. A 1/5 size fan was printed using a PBF 3D printer, and a 1/5 size fan with honeycombs was also printed. The pressure drop of 8.67 kPa and the required power of 138.19 kW, which satisfies the performance conditions of the fan, were confirmed from the results of CFD. The values of the maximum deformation amount of 0.000788 mm and the maximum effective stress of 0.241 MPa were confirmed from the structural analysis results. The fan printed by the PBF 3D printer had the same shape as the modeling, and the shape was perfect. There are no defects anywhere in appearance. However, the condition of the outer surface of the fan's back shroud is rough compared to other locations. The fan in which the honeycomb was inserted was also perfectly output, and the shape of the honeycomb was the same as the modeling.
The aerodynamic and noise calculations were performed through the CFD-CSD loose coupling methodology. In the loose coupling process, the trimmed rotor airloads were predicted by the in-house CFD code based on unstructured overset meshes, and the trim of the rotorcraft and the aeroelastic deformation of rotor blades were accounted with the CAMRAD II rotorcraft comprehensive code. The set of codes was used to analyze the HART-II baseline test condition. The effect of grid resolution and time step was examined and the loose coupling approach was found to be stable and convergent for the case. Comparison of the resulting sectional airloads, structural deformations, the noise carpets and the wake geometry with experimentally measured data was presented and showed the good agreement.

Numerical simulations of 3D aircraft configurations are performed in order to understand the effects of turbulence models on the prediction of aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics. An in-house CFD code that solves 3D RANS equations and two-equation turbulence model equations are used. The code applies Roe's approximated Riemann solver and an AF-ADI scheme. Van Leer's MUSCL extrapolation with van Albada's limiter is also adopted. Various versions of Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models as well as Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model are incorporated into the CFD code. Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST models include the standard model, the 2003 model, the model incorporating the vorticity source term, and the model containing controlled decay. Turbulent flows over a wing are simulated in order to validate the turbulence models contained in the CFD code. The results from these simulations are then compared with computational results from the $3^{rd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Numerical simulations of the DLR-F6 wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon configurations are conducted and compared with computational results of the $2^{nd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Aerodynamic characteristics as well as flow features are scrutinized with respect to the turbulence models. The results obtained from each simulation incorporating Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model variations are compared with one another.
The objective of this work is not only to perform feasibility studies on the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis for the capillary system design but also to provide an enhanced understanding of the autonomous capillary flow. The capillary flow is evaluated by means of the commercial CFD software of FLUENT, which includes the VOF (volume-of-fluid) model for multiphase flow analysis. The effect of wall adhesion at fluid interfaces in contact with rigid boundaries is considered in terms of static contact angle. Feasibility studies are first performed, including mesh-resolution influence on pressure profile, which has a sudden increase at the liquid/gas interface. Then we perform both 2D and 3D simulations and examine the transient nature of the capillary flow. Analytical solutions are also derived for simple cases and compared with numerical results. Through this work, essential information on the capillary system design is brought out. Our efforts and initial success in numerical description of the microfluidic capillary flows enhance the fundamental understanding of the autonomous capillary flow and will eventually pave the road for full-scale, computer-aided design of microfluidic networks.

Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is important to analyze the head losses at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. The stream characteristics were analyzed and head loss coefficients were estimated by using the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model, FLUENT 6.3, at surcharged square manhole in this study. The CFD model was carefully assessed by comparing simulated results with the experimental ones. The study results indicate that there was good agreement between simulation model and experiment. The CFD model was proved to be capable of estimating the head loss coefficients at surcharged manholes. The head loss coefficients with variation of the ratio of manhole width(B) to inflow pipe diameter(d) and variation of the drop height at surcharged square manhole with a straight-path through were calculated using FLUENT 6.3. As the ratio of B/d increases, head loss coefficient increases. The depth and head loss coefficient at manhole were gradually increased when the drop height was more than 5cm. Therefore, the CFD model(Fluent 6.3) might be used as a tool to simulate the water depth, energy losses, and velocity distribution at surcharged square manhole.
Hydraulic performance of the pump with an inducer was predicted by 3-D Navier-stokes calculation. The evaluated pump was the single-stage centrifugal pump with a separated inducer to pressurize fuel (LCH4) in Turbo-pump system with a specific speed (Ns) of approximately 0.3[rad/s, m3/s, J/kg] and a suction specific speed(s) of 15[rad/s, m3/s, J/kg]. That conventional pump was designed with the combination of 1-D theory and empirical correlation. In this study, preliminary design to select key parameters such as inlet flow coefficient was reviewed by investigating sets of the known design methods to achieve appropriate suction performance, and the performance of newly designed inducer and impeller was compared with the old one, using CFD method. The numerical results showed that the hydraulic efficiency of the new pump was predicted $5.5\%$ higher than that of the conventional one, through design parameter re-selection, configuration improvement and blade loading control
