  • A Device performance analyzing method for appropriate level in hybrid rendering model is suggested. In recent research, we proposed a hybrid rendering model which is applying a proper shading method to each of polygons consisting of an object. The number of polygon for Gouraud shading and that for flat shading should be considered according to a current device performance and system environments. Therefore, this paper suggests the method to calculate automatically a proper resolution of a mesh of object and a proper level of mixture between Gouraud and a flat shading, considering a current device performance and a preference of end-user. The rendering model is so simple that it can be an efficient replacement to reduce a real-time rendering time since it provides automatically multi-level of rendering resolution to an executing environments. Moreover, it can be adopted in real-time adaptive service for 3D graphic contents like a graphic game under various device environments.

  • SIFT is popularly used in computer vision application such as object recognition, motion tracking, and 3D reconstruction among various shape descriptors. However, it is not easy to apply SIFT into the image similarity search as it is since it uses many high dimensional keypoint vectors. In this paper, we present a SIFT based image similarity search method using an edge image pyramid and an interesting region detection. The proposed method extracts keypoints, which is invariant to contrast, scale, and rotation of image, by using the edge image pyramid and removes many unnecessary keypoints from the image by using the hough transform. The proposed hough transform can detect objects of ellipse type so that it can be used to find interesting regions. Experimental results demonstrate that the retrieval performance of the proposed method is about 20% better than that of traditional SIFT in average recall.

  • Multi-view video system provides both realistic 3D feelings and free-view navigation. But it is hard to transmit too huge data, so we send only two or three view images and generate intermediate view image using depth information. In this paper, we propose high quality multi-view image generation method from stereoscopic images. Since the stereo matching method does not provide accurate disparity values for all the pixels, especially at the occlusion area, we propose an occlusion handling method using the background pixels at first. We also apply a joint bilateral filtering to enhance the disparity map at the object boundary since it can affect the quality of synthesized images significantly. Finally, we can generate virtual view images at intermediate view positions using confidence map to reduce bad pixel and hole's error. Experimental results show the proposed method performs better than the conventional method.

  • This paper deals with a problem occuring in recognition of tactile images due to the effects of imposed force at a me urement moment. Tactile image of a contact surface, used for recognition of the surface type, varies depending on the forces imposed so that a false recognition may result in. This paper fuzzifies two parameters of the contour of a tactile image with the membership function formed by considering the imposed force. Two fuzzifed paramenters are fused by the average Minkowski's dist; lnce. The proposed algorithm was implemented on the multisensor system cnmposed of an optical tact le sensor and a 6 axes forceltorque sensor. By the experiments, the proposed algorithm has shown average recognition ratio greater than 869% over all imposed force ranges and object models which is about 14% enhancement comparing to the case where only the contour information is used. The pro- ~oseda lgorithm can be used for end-effectors manipulating a deformable or fragile objects or for recognition of 3D objects by implementing on multi-fingered robot hand.

  • This paper proposes an approach to the fusion of two heterogeneous sensors with two different fields-of-view (FOV): LIDAR and an RGB camera. Registration between data captured by LIDAR and an RGB camera provided the fusion results. Registration was completed once a depthmap corresponding to a 2-dimensional RGB image was generated. For this fusion, RPLIDAR-A3 (manufactured by Slamtec) and a general digital camera were used to acquire depth and image data, respectively. LIDAR sensor provided distance information between the sensor and objects in a scene nearby the sensor, and an RGB camera provided a 2-dimensional image with color information. Fusion of 2D image and depth information enabled us to achieve better performance with applications of object detection and tracking. For instance, automatic driver assistance systems, robotics or other systems that require visual information processing might find the work in this paper useful. Since the LIDAR only provides depth value, processing and generation of a depthmap that corresponds to an RGB image is recommended. To validate the proposed approach, experimental results are provided.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of teaching materials for elementary science gifted conception about object recognition. Elementary science gifted have misconceptions that they can see in lightness. They can not explain how a shadow is made. This paper reports in-depth investigation on elementary science gifted's understanding of object recognition focusing on process of light. A program is developed to elementary science gifted in the subject matter. The tutorial emphasizing the process of light consists of pre-test, worksheet, and post-test. The Tutorial has 4 steps; darkness and light, light on things, light reached eyes, structure of the eyes. Each steps has 2~4 experiments. Through the tutorial, we expect their misconceptions can be changed into scientific conceptions. For the research and analysis, a questionnaire is posed to 39 elementary science gifted at M Elementary School in D Metropolitan City. The first method of product analysis makes a comparative study of pre-test, post-test score, and hake gain each test. As a result, total score of all student was raised. And hake gain of pre-test(II) is 0.6, hake gain of post-test is 0.68. It is Medium gain. Also, elementary science gifted could understand how we see through the tutorial emphasizing process of light. And their misconceptions can be changed into scientific conceptions.

  • We propose a method for evaluating the image quality of color liquid crystal display(LCD) monitors by using the polychromatic modulation transfer function(PMTF), which is calculated from the modulation transfer function(MTF) weighted by the overall color response of the system including the test LCD monitor. We confirm that experimental results using the PMTF agree well with simulated results of the PMTF of a color LCD monitor by using three bar targets with different amplitudes and three elementary colors such as red(R), green(G), and blue(B). As a results, we should choose the PMTF instead of the white color MTF or monochromatic MTF in order to evaluate correctly the image quality of color LCD monitors.

  • This study aims to investigate the dynamic interaction characteristics between Maglev vehicles and an elevated guideway. A more detailed model for the dynamic interaction of the vehicle/guideway is proposed. The proposed model incorporates a 3D full vehicle model based on prototyping, flexible guideway by a modal superposition method, and levitation electromagnets including the feedback controller into an integrated model. The proposed model was applied to an urban transit Maglev developed for a commercial application to analyze the dynamic response of the vehicle and guideway, and the effect of the surface roughness of the rail, mid-span guideway deflections, and air gap variations are then investigated from the numerical simulation.

  • To acquire seabed information, the mosaic images of the seabed were generated using Side Scan Sonar. Short time energy function which is needed for slant range correction is proposed to get the height of Tow-Fish to the reflected acoustic amplitudes of each ping, and that leads to a mosaic image without water column. While generating mosaic image, maximum value, last value and average value are used for the measure of a pixel in the mosaic image and 3-D information was kept by using acoustic amplitudes which were heading for specific direction. As a generating method of mosaic image, low resolution mosaic image which is over 1m/pixel resolution was generated for whole survey area first, and then high resolution mosaic image which is generated under 0.1m/pixel resolution was generated for the selected area. Rocks, ripple mark, sand wave, tidal flat and artificial fish reef are found in the mosaic image.

  • In this study, we derived an theoretical equation, using a simplified spring-mass model for the rolling stock, to obtain the overriding behavior of a leading vehicle, which is considered as the main factor in train accidents. To verify the derived equation, we created a simple 2D model based on the theoretical model, and a simple 3D model considering the characteristics of the power bogie. We then compared the theoretical results with the simulation results obtained using LS-DYNA. The maximum relative derivations in the vertical displacements at the first end-buffer, which is the most important point in overriding, were 3.5 [%] and 1.7 [%] between the two results. Further, we evaluated collision-induced overriding displacements using the theoretical equation for a rubber draft gear, a hydraulic buffer under various collision conditions. We have suggested a theoretical approach for the realization of overriding collision accidents or the energy absorption design of the front end of trains.
