Comparison of Physicochemical Properties of Meat and Viscera with Respect to the Age of Abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) (전복(Haliotis discus hannai)의 연령에 따른 육과 내장의 이화학적 특성 비교)

  • We compared the physicochemical properties of meat and viscera with regard to the age of abalone (1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year-old abalone). With respect to total amino acids, the level was highest in 1-year-old abalone, at $19,046.00{\pm}548.53\;mg%$, whereas 4-year-old abalone had the lowest value of $15,770.44{\pm}454.19\;mg%$. In the viscera, 3-year-old abalone had the greatest level of total amino acids, at $16,575.10{\pm}477.37\;mg%$, whereas 1-year-old abalone had the lowest, at $14,947.26{\pm}430.48\;mg%$. The level of total free amino acids in meat tended to increase with age whereas that of the viscera fell. The level of polyunsaturated acids decreased with age in meat. The concentration of chondroitin sulfate in both meat and viscera tended to increase with age. This was especially noticeable in meat. The level in 1-year-old abalone, $9.03{\pm}0.23%$ (w/w), rose to $14.17{\pm}0.33%$ in 4-year-old abalone, with statistical significance. On the other hand, the collagen level in both meat and viscera decreased with age. Again, this was particularly noticeable in meat, where the concentration in 1-year-old abalone, $199.70{\pm}5.00\;mg/g$, fell remarkably to the value of $47.86{\pm}1.10\;mg/g$ in 4-year-old abalone. We have thus provided basic data for research on abalone.

The Effect of Broodstock Age on the Spawning Performance of Cultured Haliotis discus hannai

  • The effect of broodstock age on the spawning performance of cultured abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, was assessed for five age groups (3, 4, 5, 6, 7 years old). Spawning performance of the five age groups was assessed in terms of the percentage of spawning abalone, eggs per spawning female, fertilization rates, hatch rates and attachment rates per spawning. The percentage of spawning abalone increased along with broodstock age, reached maximum in female groups of 5- and 6-year age (60%), and in male group of 6-year age (100%), subsequently decreased in 7-year age group. The number of eggs produced per spawning also increased with broodstock age, and the maximum was found in 6-year age. Although the number of spawned eggs for the oldest abalone declined, it still spawned much more eggs than 3, 4, and 5 years old females. The fertilization and hatch rates were obviously larger for 4-6 years old group than the younger and older abalones. The maxima were found in 5-year age group (96.0% and 84.5%), and the minimum were appeared in 7-year age group (79.3% and 58.2%). The attachment rate increased with broodstock age, reached maximum in 6-year age group (33.6%), although the increment gradually declined. The attachment rate for 7-year age group rapidly decreased (16.6%). These results suggested that broodstock age affected the spawning performance of H. discus hannai, which peaked between 5 and 6 years old, and broodstock should be bred during this period for hatchery production.

The Effect of Growth and Survival Rate on Feeding Rate of 3-year-old Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai rearing in Net Cage Culture (3년산 북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai의 해상가두리 내 먹이공급비율에 따른 성장 및 생존율)

  • The effect of different feeding rate on the growth and survival rate of 3-year-old abalone, Haliotis dicsus hannai were investigated in marine net cage culture. Feeding rate is determined that was fed 5, 10, 15 and 20 percentage to abalone at body weight once daily : 5 daily feeding rate (DFR), 10 DFR, 15 DFR and 20 DFR. After that, it was conducted to reared during thirteen month with two replicates in net cage culture. In the growth performance of reared abalone (initial mean shell length $73.77{\pm}11.27mm$) in net cage culture, that the absolute growth rate (ARG), daily growth rate (DGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) to the shell length and shell breadth, as well as weight gain (WG), daily weight gain (DWG) and specific weight gain (SWG) to body weight of 5 DFR were higher than those of different groups (P < 0.05). Also, survival rate of all feeding rate groups was not significant, but it was showed bellow 30 percents. Therefore, these results is showed that the daily feeding rate for natural feed of 3-year-old abalones reared in net cage culture should be to supply among five to ten percents.

A Study on Gruel Intake and Preference of Cheongju Area Adults and Gruel Development according to Age (연령에 따른 청주지역 성인의 죽 섭취실태, 선호도 및 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate gruel intake, preference and opinions about gruel development to produce new products for breakfast. The subjects of this study were 307 adults in Chungju city. People who favored gruels were 212(69.5%) and 50.2% of the subjects liked the gruel because of good digestion and absorption. They liked midium thick or thin gruel and also liked grain granules with some stuff as contents. The gruels often taken were abalone gruel(45.9%), pumpkin gruel(41.7%), chicken gruel(34.9%), vegetable gruel(33.6%), beef and mushroom gruel(30.3%) etc. in order. The frequency of gruel intake was 1-2 times/year and 59.6% of subjects got gruels from the special gruel restaurant. People who need gruels most were patients, indigestible person, the elderly, weaning babies, workers and students missing breakfast in order. Sesame taste obtained the highest score of all, that of bitter taste was significantly higher in over fifty year old people (p<0.05), and hot taste score was significantly higher in 30-40 year old people (p<0.01). The gruels preferred most were abalone gruel, pumpkin gruel, chicken gruel, beef and mushroom gruel, vegetable gruel, red bean gruel, pine nut gruel, egg gruel, sesame gruel, plain grain gruel etc. in order. Fifty seven percent of subjects wanted to develope new gruels fortified nutrients. In conclusion, when the substitute gruel for breakfast is developed, it is better to use food materials to be easy to digest, to have grain granules with some stuff inside and to be sesame taste.

Optimum Stocking Density of 3-year-old Pacific Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai Reared in Net Cage Culture (3년산 북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai의 해상가두리 양성 시 적정 수용밀도)

  • The effects of different stocking densities on the growth and survival rate of the 3-year-old pacific abalone, Haliotis dicus hannai were investigated in marine net cage for a year. Stocking densities in net cage ($2.4{\times}1.2m$) was set 15, 30, 45 and 60 percentage (= per)/sq m (square meter, $m^2$) with share to cross-sectional area per shelter. The water temperature during the testing period was $8.2^{\circ}C-22.1^{\circ}C$, and salinity is $33.5{\pm}0.6psu$, and dissolved oxygen is $7.87{\pm}0.86mg/L$. In the shell length (initial size : $71.50{\pm}2.28mm$) growth and shell breadth (initial size : $46.43{\pm}2.28mm$) of the test abalones, the absolute growth rate (ARG), daily growth rate (DGR) and specific growth rates (SGR) of the 15 per/sq m and 30 per/sq m were higher than those of 45 per/sq m and 60 per/sq m density group (P < 0.05). Also in the weight (initial weight : $35.7{\pm}8.1g$), it showed the same results. In survival rates, it were that 15 per/sq m and 30 per/sq m is significantly higher than 45 per/sq m and 60 per/sq m. Therefore, it was that the 15 per/sq m is optimized stocking density in marine net cages about the 3-year-old pacific abalone over 70 mm size. The result shown that total cross-sectional area under the shelter is based on 15 per/sq m ($2.4{\times}2.4m$, 354 number in a net cage) is suitable for fast growth and survival. But if the economy consider, optimized stocking density would be appropriate to accept 30 per/sq m ($2.4{\times}2.4m$, 710 number in a net cage).

  • The review of side dishes, oereal dishes and seasonings of the banquet on the 24th year of King Kojong in Chosun Dynasty were summarized as follows: 1. Ten kinds of soups(=Tang), that is Yyolguja Tang$.$Guja Tang$.$Keumjung Tang$.$Whanja Tang$.$Jap Tang$.$Gol Tang$.$Seunggiwa Tang$.$Jeopo Tang$.$Haesam Tang$.$Yang Tang were served. The most frequently served soup among them was Yyolguja Tang. 2. Various kinds of dried meat/fish were piled up most highly among dishes. Sliced beef and minced beef among dried meats, white cud$.$yellow cud$.$flatfish$.$skate$.$shark$.$octopus$.$dried abalone$.$cuttle fish$.$dried scallop were piled up together. 3. Sliced of boiled beef/pork and gelatined knuckles were assorted. Boiled meat which was made of beef, pork, lamb, liver, stomach, brisket and plat flank of caw was chiefly used for boiled beef, hams for boiled pork, mediumsized lamb for boiled lamb. And the legs and stomach of caw, old chicken, mullet were used for gelatined knuckle. 4. Three kinds of pan-frying dishes that was stomach and liver of caw, and mullet were usually piled up, If one kind in one dish, sea cucumber and mullet were used respectively. 5. Boiled abalone was dried abalone with soaked, sliced and boiled down in soysauce. 6. Roasted dish was usually made of assorted food stuffs. Sometimes chicken an pheasant was used for roasted dish. 7. Steamed dish was like this : assorted beef, fresh abalone, sea cucumber, mullet, young pork, chicken, dried abalone. 8. Raw dish was made of intestine of caw, fresh abalone and mullet. 9. Poached egg was serving decorated with red pepper, pine-nut and green onion. 10. Seasoned green-been-jelly was served only one time. 11. Radish kimchi was served only one time. 12. Chief foods were nuddle and stuffed bun. 13. Served seasings were honey, mustard, soysauce with vinegar, salt. Review from banquet menu, 34 kinds of side dishes were served : 10 kinds of soup, dried fish/meat, boiled beef, boiled pork, gelatined knuckle, 5 kinds of panfrying, boiled-down-abalone in soysauce, 3 kinds of roast, 5 kinds of steamed, 3 kinds of raw dishes, pouched egg, green-bean-jelly, kimchi. 4 kinds of chief foods were served : nuddle, dry nuddle, 2 kinds of dumping.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Growth-Related Traits in 1-Year Old of Two Korean Abalone Subspecies, Haliotis discus hannai and H. discus discus, by Using Multiple Traits of Animal Model (다형질 Animal Model에 의한 12개월령 한국산 전북 2 아종의 성장관련형질에 대한 유전모수 추정)

  • In other aquaculture species, large improvements in growth have been achieved through selective breeding. Ezo abalone(Haliotis discus hannai) and disk abalone(H. discus discus) are major aquatic animals cultured in Asia, but selective breeding for the promotion of growth with these abalones has not been actively pursued. Recently significant efforts are being made to promote production of these species through selective breeding in Korea. The aims of this work were to estimate the general genetic parameters, heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations on growth-related traits at 1-year old in two Korean abalone subspecies, H. discus hannai and H. discus discus, by using multiple trait animal model. The data were collected from the records of 1,504 individuals produced from 22 sires and 26 dams in H. discus hannai and 297 individuals produced from 5 sires and 6 dams in H. discus discus, which evaluated by the Genetics and Breeding Research Center, National Fisheries Research & Development Institute(NFRDI). Genetic parameters were estimated for these abalone subspecies raised in Bukjeju branch, NFRDI, from May 20, 2004 to May 16, 2005, respectively. The heritability estimates obtained from restricted maximum likelihood(REML) were higher than expected, ranging from 0.40 to 0.43 for growth traits shell length, shell width and body weight in H. discus hannai and from 0.26 to 0.51 in H. discus discus, respectively. The heritabilities for shell shape and condition factor were lower than others of growth traits such as ranging from 0.09 to 0.19 in H. discus hannai and from 0.10 to 0.23 in H. discus discus, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic were > 0.93 between shell parameters and weight in two abalone species, respectively, indicating that breeding for weight gains could be successfully achieved by selecting for shell length.

Expression Pattern of Major Heat Shock Protein Genes in Diploid and Triploid Abalone Haliotis discus hannai Juveniles (이배체 및 삼배체 전복(Haliotis discus hannai) 치패에서 주요 열충격 단백질 유전자들(heat shock protein genes)의 발현 특징)

  • Basal and heat shock-induced mRNA expression patterns of major heat shock protein (HSP) genes, including those encoding heat shock protein (HSP) 90, HSP70, HSP70-12A, heat shock inducible protein 70 (HSIP70), heat shock binding protein 1 (HSPBP1), HSP60, and HSP40 were examined in the gill and hepatopancreas of 1-year-old diploid and triploid abalone Haliotis discus hannai juveniles. Under non-stimulated conditions at 19℃, triploid abalones displayed, in general, higher mRNA levels of various HSPs (HSP70, HSIP70, HSPBP1, HSP70-12A, and HSP60 in the gill and HSIP70, HSPBP1, and HSP60 in the hepatopancreas) than did communally cultured diploids. Conversely, only the hepatopancreatic expression of HSP70-12A was higher in diploids than in triploids. However, the fold changes in gene expression in response to an acute thermal challenge (elevation from 19 to 30℃) were generally greater in diploids than in triploids, such that the difference in basal expression was diminished, weakened, or even reversed after heat shock treatment. However, unlike other HSP genes, the basal expression of HSP60 (higher in 3N) was more pronounced after heat shock treatment. Collectively, the results of this study suggest that triploid abalones have different capacities for not only basal expression but also the heat-induced expression of HSPs in an HSP member-dependent manner.

Seasonal Changes in Physiology of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai reared from Nohwa Island on the South Coast of Korea (북방전복 Haliotis discus hannai의 계절별 생리적 변화)

  • Growth, oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, feeding and assimilation rate were examined from May 2010 to February 2011 in order to assess the physiological changes of Haliotis discus hannai in accordance with changes in season. The water temperature was in the range of $8-23.2^{\circ}C$ and the salinity in the range of 31.9-34.1psu during the examination period. The length of shell of Haliotis discus hannai grew from 36.3 mm to 66.1 mm in the 1 year old entities and from 60.6 mm to 66.1 mm for the 2 year old entities, while the weight of the meat increased from 3.16 g to 12.04 g and from 15.8 g to 21.5 g, respectively. The oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rate displayed trend of increase in accordance with the increase in water temperature, while the feeding rate was high during the period from July to October. The assimilation rate was in the range of 68%-71% without significant difference between the age of the entities and seasons. SFG displayed +value throughout the year for the 1 year old entities of Haliotis discus hannai as well as for the 2 year old entities with the exception of the period of July, thereby showing that they are growing throughout the year. Therefore, there was no environmental effect including water temperature and salinity during the examination period.

Growth Characteristics of Juvenile Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai by Commercial Artificial Diet Feeding rate during the Winter Season in Indoor Tank (동계기간 상업용 배합사료 공급비율에 따른 북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai 치패의 성장특성)

  • This study investigated the growth characteristics of juvenile abalone when has been rearing as other different feed rates by the commercial abalone formulated feed on indoor tank, during the winter period that was maintaining on the low water temperature. Experimental abalones were use to 1 year old (shell length $29.14{\pm}2.56mm$, wet weight $2.9{\pm}0.6g$), and it has cultured at six feeding rate groups (0.75 DFW, 1.50 DFW, 2.25 DFW, 3.00 DFW, 3.75 DFW, 4.5 DFW) that were set up the daily feeding rate about total weight (DFW), and two replicated. The average water temperature in the experiment period was $9.7{\pm}3.27^{\circ}C$. In the monthly change absolute growth rate (AGRSL) and specific growth (SGRSL) of shell length, at January, 3.00 DFW was significantly higher than all feeding rate groups (P < 0.05). And in the monthly change of weight change and weight gain (WG), at March, 3.75DFW was significantly higher than all feeing rate groups (P < 0.05). The growth coefficient of thermal units (TGC) was decreased rapid since January, and 3.75 DFW was show significantly higher than all feeding rate groups (P < 0.05). In monthly change of feed efficiency (FE), at December, the 0.75 DFW was significantly higher than all feeding rate groups (P < 0.05), and in February and March, there was no significant difference between all feeding period. Therefore, In this study, was show that juvenile abalones can do to maintain or increasing from weight to supply commercial artificial diet during winter period when rearing into the indoor tank.
