  • Micromachines are extremely novel artifacts with a variety of special characteristics. Utilizing their tiny dimensions ranging roughly from 10 to $1O^3$ micro-meters, the micromachines can perform tasks in a revolutionary manner that would be impossible for conventional artifacts. Micromachines are in general related to various coupled physical phenomena. They are required to be evaluated and designed considering the coupled phenomena. This paper describes finite element analysis (FEA) simulation of practical behaviors for the micro actuator. Especially, electric field modeling in micro actuators has been generally restricted to in-plane two-dimensional finite element analysis because of the complexity of the micro actuator geometry. However, in this thesis, the actual three-dimensional geometry of the micro actuator is considered. The starting torque obtained from the in-plane two-dimensional analytical solutions were compared with that of the actual three-dimensional FE analysis results. The starting torque is proportional to $V^2$, and that the two-dimensional analytical solutions are larger than the three-dimensional FE ones. It is found that the evaluation of micro actuator has to be considered electrical leakage phenomenon.

  • Axisymmetric numerical thermal analysis for a 3-dimensional regenerative cooling system in a rocket engine is carried out. To predict the accurate heat transfer with the stiff temperature distribution, several tests have been conducted for the grid size, the properties variation of the coolant and the combustion gas depending on temperature. The axisymmetric heat flux model is defined using fin efficiencies and is designed to be equivalent to the heat flux of the 3-dimensional coolant channel. For comparison purpose, the 1-dimensional analysis using Bartz equation is also conducted. The performance of the present model in predicting the cooling characteristics of a 3-dimensional regenerative cooling system is compared with the 3-dimensional results of RTE(Rocket Thermal Evaluation). It is found that the present method predicts much closer results to those of RTE code than 1-dimensional analysis.

  • Resin transfer molding (RTM) is one of the most popular processes for producing fiber reinforced polymer composites. In the manufacture of complex thick composite structures, analysis on flow front advancement on the resin impregnating the multi-layered fiber preform is helpful for the optimization of the process. In this study, three-dimensional mold filling simulation of RTM is carried out by using CVFEM (Control Volume Finite Element Method). On the assumption of isothermal flow of Newtonian fluid, Darcy’s law and continuity equation are used as governing equations. Different permeability tensors employed in each layer are obtained by experiments. Numerically predicted flow front is compared with experimental one in order to validate the numerical results. Flow simulations are conducted in the two mold geometries, rectangular plate and hollow cylinder. Permeability tensor of each layer preform in Cartesian coordinate system is transformed to cylinder coordinates system so that the flow within the multi-layered preforms of the hollow cylinder can be calculated exactly. Our emphasis is on the three dimensional flow analysis for circular three-dimensional braided preform, which shows outstanding mechanical properties such as high impact strength and toughness compared with other conventional two-dimensional laminar-structured preforms.

  • It is well known that the quality and efficiency of the design of metal forming processes can be significantly improved with the aid of effective numerical simulations. In the present study, a two-and three-dimensional finite element simulation system, CAMP form, was developed for the analysis of metal forming processes in the PC environment. It is composed of a solver based on the thermo-rigid-viscoplastic approach and graphic user interface (GUI) based pre-and post-processors to be used for the effective description of forming conditions and graphic display of simulation results, respectively. In particular, in the case of CAMPform 2D (two-dimensional), as the solver contains an automatic remeshing module which determines the deformation step when remeshing is required and reconstructs the new mesh system, it is possible to carry out simulations automatically without any user intervention. Also, the forming analysis considers ductile fracture of the workpiece and wear of dies for better usage of the system. In the case of CAMPform 3D, general three-dimensional problems that involve complex die geometries and require remeshing can be analyzed, but full automation of simulations has yet to be achieved. In this paper, the overall structure and computational background of CAMPform will be briefly explained and analysis results of several forming processes will be shown. From the current results, it is construed that CAMPform can be used in providing useful information to assist the design of forming processes.

  • Three-dimensional graphic objects created by MATLAB are exported to the AUTOCAD program through the MATLAB handle functions. The imported SAT format files are used to produce the finite element mesh for MSC.PATRAN. Based on the Monte-Carlo random sample principle, the material heterogeneity of cement composites with randomly distributed fibers is described by the WEIBULL distribution function. In this paper, a concept called "soft region" including micro-defects, micro-voids, etc. is put forward for the simulation of crack propagation in fiber-reinforced cement composites. The performance of the numerical model is demonstrated by several examples involving crack initiation and growth in the composites under three-dimensional stress conditions: tensile loading; compressive loading and crack growth along a bimaterial interface.

  • A rigid-plastic finite element analysis for the die forging process of a socket ball joint, which is used in the transportation system, was carried out. And also with the results, the elastic stress analysis for the forging die was performed in order to get basic data for the die life prediction. The die fatigue life prediction was simulated using Goodman's and Gerber's equation. The prediction technique for the fatigue life of a forged product, the socket ball joint, using DEFORM-3D is presented and the results are commented upon. Archard's wear model was used for the wear simulation and then the wear simulation and then the wear quantity was quantity was evaluated using volume. In order to prove the wear simulation results to be reliable, wear quantity of the real forging die set in used a forging factory was measured using a 3-dimensional measurement apparatus. The simulation results were relatively in good agreement with the experimental measurements.

  • A study on techniques to evaluate auditorium assignment visible efficiency using three-dimensional simulation. The most important thing to be considered is to ensure the visibility to the podium upon assigning auditorium of venues, classrooms or seminar rooms. However, since there are so many variables to be considered such as the form of the stage, the area and height of the stage, size of screen, and the distance and angle of the auditorium from the podium, the methods to assign auditorium are staying at the level of basic for a long time. Thus, in this study, we proposed simulation methodology to quantitatively evaluate the three-dimensional visible efficiency based on Visual Graph Analysis (VGA) theory. After analytical methodology manufactures application, it sets examples of visibility depending on location of screen, visibility depending on degree of height difference and visibility about three-dimensional Mass Zoning like a stage and verifies the efficacy. In addition, based on results, visibility expectation curve is drawn and the method to calculate the stepped height depending on necessary visibility is proposed.

  • The purpose of this research is to apply GIS(Geographic Information System) for the road simulation and find some benefits analysis for the design processes. The northern Jeju island was selected as a case study. The 1/5,000 digital map and GIS technique were used for optimum road design of the island based on Arc View software. Using this software we can get an overlay map by combination of hill shade map, slope map, aspect map, and building buffer map. Based on the overlay map, we designed the optimum road line and performed three dimensional simulation. From the results, we found that the developed three dimensional road simulation technique using GIS technique that was very useful tool to estimate the reasonable road design before the real road construction works.

  • The Neumann Expansion method has been used for evaluating the response variability of three dimensional truss structure resulting from the spatial variability of material properties with the aid of the finite element method, and in conjunction with the direct Monte Carlo simulation methods. The spatial variabilites are modeled as three-dimensional stochastic field. Yamazaki 〔1〕 has extended the Neumann Expansion method to the plane-strain problem to obtain the response variability of 2 dimensional stochastic systems. This paper presents the extension of the Neumann Expansion method to 3 dimensional stochastic systems. The results by the NEM are compared with those by the deterministic finite element analysis and by the direct Monte Carlo simulation method
