  • The purpose of this study is to estimate diameter distribution, volume per hectare, and carbon stock for Quercus variabilis stand. 354 Quercus variabilis stands were selected on the basis of age and structure, the data and samples for these stands are collected. For the prediction of diameter distribution, Weibull model was applied and for the estimation of the parameters, a simplified method-of-moments was applied. To verify the accuracy of estimates, models were developed using 80% of the total data and validation was done on the remaining 20%. For the verification of the model, the fitness index, the root mean square error, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics were used. The fitness index of the site index, height, and volume equation estimated from verification procedure were 0.967, 0.727, and 0.988 respectively and the root mean square error were 2.763, 1.817, and 0.007 respectively. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test applied to Weibull function resulted in 75%. From the models developed in this research, the estimated volume and above-ground carbon stock were derived as $188.69m^3/ha$, 90.30 tC/ha when site index and stem number of 50-years-old Quercus variabilis stand show 14 and 697 respectively. The results obtained from this study may provide useful information about the growth of broad-leaf species and prediction of carbon stock for Quercus variabilis stand.

  • Precipitation data are an integral part of water management planning, especially the design of hydroelectric structures and the study of floods and droughts. However, it is difficult to obtain accurate data due to space-time constraints. The recent increase in hydrological variability due to climate change has further emphasized the importance of precipitation simulation techniques. Therefore, in this study, the Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse model was utilized to apply the parameters necessary to predict daily precipitation. The effect of this parameter on the daily precipitation prediction was analyzed by applying exponential distribution, Gamma distribution, and Weibull distribution to evaluate the suitability of daily precipitation prediction according to each distribution type. As a result, it is judged that parameters should be selected in consideration of regional and seasonal characteristics when simulating precipitation using the MBLRP model.

  • The characteristics of the parameters for the probability distribution of fatigue crack growth life, using the non-Gaussian random process simulation method is investigated. In this paper, the material resistance to fatigue crack growth is treated as a spatial random process, which varies randomly on the crack surface. Using the previous experimental data, the crack length equals the number of cycle curves that are simulated. The results are obtained for constant stress intensity factor range conditions with stress ratios of R=0.2, three specimen thickness of 6, 12 and 18mm, and the four stress intensity level. The probability distribution function of fatigue crack growth life seems to follow the 3-parameter Wiubull,, showing a slight dependence on specimen thickness and stress intensity level. The shape parameter, $\alpha$, does not show the dependency of thickness and stress intensity level, but the scale parameter, $\beta$, and location parameter, ${\gamma}$, are decreased by increasing the specimen thickness and stress intensity level. The slope for the stress intensity level is larger than the specimen thickness.

  • For a coastal or harbor structure design, one of the most important environmental factors is the appropriate design wave condition. Especially, the information of deepwater wave height distribution is essential for reliability design. In this paper, a set of deep water wave data obtained from KORDI(2003) were analyzed for extreme wave heights. These wave data at 67 stations off the Korean coast from 1979 to 1998 were arranged in the 16 directions. The probability distributions considered in this research were the Weibull, the Gumbel, the Log-pearson Type-III, and Lognormal distribution. For each of these distributions, three parameter estimation methods, i.e. the method of moments, maximum likelihood and probability weighted moments, were applied. Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit tests were performed, and the assumed distribution was accepted at the confidence level 95%. Gumbel distribution which best fits to the 67 station was selected as the most probable parent distribution, and optimally estimated parameters and 50 year design wave heights were presented.

  • In the present paper, the effects of initial crack location on spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth resistance (FCGR) in friction stir welded (FSWed) AA7075-T651 plates were studied. The objective of this study is to characterize the statistical properties of FCGR for three different types of initial crack location (ICL) specimens. In this work, the FCGR coefficients were treated as a spatial random process. It was found that the FCGR coefficients for all initial crack location specimens closely followed a two parameter Weibull distribution. The shape parameter of the Weibull distribution for BM-ICL specimens showed the largest value of 7.50, and that for the WM-ICL specimens showed the smallest value of 2.61. In addition, the autocorrelation functions for all the ICL specimens followed the exponential function.

  • In this study, the finite-failure NHPP software reliability model was applied to the software development model based on the Weibull lifetime distribution (Goel-Okumoto, Rayleigh, Type-2 Gumbe), which is widely used in the software reliability field, and then the cost attributes were compared and evaluated. For this study, failure time data detected during normal operation of the software system were collected and used, the most-likelihood estimation (MLE) method was applied to the parameter estimation of the proposed model, and the calculation of the nonlinear equation was solved using the binary method. As a result, first, in the software development model, when the cost of testing per unit time and the cost of removing a single defect increased, the cost increased but the release time did not change, and when the cost of repairing failures detected during normal system operation increased, the cost increased and the release time was also delayed. Second, as a result of comprehensive comparative analysis of the proposed models, it was found that the Type-2 Gumble model was the most efficient model because the development cost was lower and the release time point was relatively faster than the Rayleigh model and the Goel-Okumoto basic model. Third, through this study, the development cost properties of the Weibull distribution model were newly evaluated, and the analyzed data is expected to be utilized as design data that enables software developers to explore the attributes of development cost and release time.

  • This study develops a prediction model for toilet and laundry water end-uses based on surveyed data which measured housing and household characteristics of 140 households over 5 years in Korea. Classical regression model assuming a normal distribution was not appropriate and estimated parameters were biased, because the distribution of measured water-uses was left-skewed. As an alternative to this problem, we considered the distribution of weibull and lognormal for each water-uses, and three regression models were compared using log-likelihood and scale parameter. As a result, weibull regression were chosen to be appropriate for both water-uses and also presented the factors that affect each water-use. This results expect that an insight is provided on water resources utilization and theoretical support role for effective water resource management.

  • The effects of design parameters for small scale hydro power (SSHP) plants due to rainfall condition have been studied. The model to predict hydrologic performance for SSHP plants is used in this study. The results from analysis for rainfall conditions based on Weibull distribution show that the capacity and load factor of SSHP site had large difference between the variation of shape and scale parameter. Especially, the hydrologic performance of SSHP site due to variation of shape parameter varied more sensitive than the case of variation of scale parameter. And also, the methodology represented in this study can be used to decide the primary design specifications of SSHP sites.

  • Alumina ceramic for textile machinery was sintered and subjected to three-point bending. A semicircular surface crack was made on each sample. Crack-healing behavior was systematically studied, as a function of crack-healing temperature and crack size. The bending strength and fracture toughness of the crack-healed sample from $1200^{\circ}C\;to\;1400^{\circ}C$ were investigated. A statistical approach based on Weibull distribution was applied to the test data to evaluate the dispersion in the fracture toughness. Alumina ceramic for textile machinery have the ability to heal after cracking, from over $1300^{\circ}C$. The material can completely heal a $65{\mu}m$ diameter semielliptical crack. The fracture toughness could be explained by 2-parameter Weibull distribution.
