  • Recently, rapid and accurate 3D models creation is required in various applications using virtual reality and augmented reality technology. In this paper, we propose an on-site learning based shape deformation method which transforms the clothed 3D human model into the shape of an input point cloud. The proposed algorithm consists of two main parts: one is pre-learning and the other is on-site learning. Each learning consists of encoder, template transformation and decoder network. The proposed network is learned by unsupervised method, which uses the Chamfer distance between the input point cloud form and the template vertices as the loss function. By performing on-site learning on the input point clouds during the inference process, the high accuracy of the inference results can be obtained and presented through experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for construction of robust 3D statistical shape model in the mandible CT datasets. Our method consists of following four steps. First, we decompose a 3D input shape Into patches. Second, to generate a corresponding shape of a floating shape, all shapes in the training set are parameterized onto a disk similar to the patch topology. Third, we generate the corresponding shape by one-to-one mapping between the reference and the floating shapes. We solve the problem failed to generate the corresponding points near the patch boundary Finally, the corresponding shapes are aligned with the reference shape. Then statistical shape model is generated by principle component analysis. To evaluate the accuracy of our 3D statistical shape model of the mandible, we perform visual inspection and similarity measure using average distance difference between the floating and the corresponding shapes. In addition, we measure the compactness of statistical shape model using the modes of variation. Experimental results show that our 3D statistical shape model generated by the mandible CT datasets with various characteristics has a high similarity between the floating and corresponding shapes and is represented by the small number of modes.

  • In this paper, the abdominal-deformation measurement scheme is conducted on a shape-flexible mannequin using the DIC technique in a stereo-vision system. Firstly, during the integer-pixel displacement search, a novel fractal dimension based on an adaptive-ellipse subset area is developed to track an integer pixel between the reference and deformed images. Secondly, at the subpixel registration, a new mutual-learning adaptive particle swarm optimization (MLADPSO) algorithm is employed to locate the subpixel precisely. Dynamic adjustments of the particle flight velocities that are according to the deformation extent of each interest point are utilized for enhancing the accuracy of the subpixel registration. A test is performed on the abdominal-deformation measurement of the shape-flexible mannequin. The experiment results indicate that under the guarantee of its measurement accuracy without the cause of any loss, the time-consumption of the proposed scheme is significantly more efficient than that of the conventional method, particularly in the case of a large number of interest points.

  • A new merging technique is adopted for combining rectangular parallelepipes produced by 2-D rectangular code into more intuitive 30D volume elements. Rectangular parallelepiped codes (RP codes) can be used in volume-based representation of a three-dimensional object. We proposed more regularity-conserving 2-D rectangular coding scheme to merge rectangular cells represented by RP codes in three-dimensional space. After being constructed from modified 2-D rectangular code, 3-D RP codes are merged in the two orthogonal directions using new merging algorithm. The shape of merged 3-D object reconstructed by proposed algorithm is shown to be much closer to the original object shape than that of conventional RP codes. The storage requirement of merged object can be also reduced.

  • Shape from focus (SFF) is a technique used to reconstruct 3D shape of objects from a sequence of images obtained at different focus settings of the lens. In this paper, a new shape from focus method for 3D reconstruction of microscopic objects is described, which is based on gradient operator in Mathematical Morphology. Conventionally, in SFF methods, a single focus measure is used for measuring the focus quality. Due to the complex shape and texture of microscopic objects, single measure based operators are not sufficient, so we propose morphological operators with multi-structuring elements for computing the focus values. Finally, an optimal focus measure is obtained by combining the response of all focus measures. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm has provided more accurate depth maps than the existing methods in terms of three-dimensional shape recovery.

  • In the conventional remote monitoring system, a user in front of a computer monitor can acquire only 2 dimensional visual information in a passive way. Thus, even thoght the user finds an interesting object from the video image, helshe can hardly acquire additional information on the object such as name. 311 shape, etc. In this paper, an active monitoring system that shows additional information on the selected object is proposed. The active remote monitoring system can calculate the 3D position of the object that is selected in the video images. Then, using the 3D position of the object, other information on the object can be retrieved from the database and shown on the screen. To calculate the 3D position of the object, 2 CCD cameras that can be tilted and panned using 3 stepping motors are used. The algorithm of 3D position calculation and the result of experiments are explained.

  • Recently, Li, Brenner, Cornelissen and Kim (2002) reported that 2D shape perception during pursuit eye movement just reflected the retinal image, and this result implies that the visual system ignored the extra-retinal information. In reality, however, we usually do not experience the perceptual distottion of 2D shape during pursuit eye movement. One Possibility is that the visual system night exploit the fact that the relative location between objects on retinal image is constantly maintained even during pursuit eye movement. The present research examined this possibility. Interestingly, perceptual distortion of 2D shape was observed even in the presence of reference, however, the amount of distortion decreased compared to when the reference does not exist. The distance between the reference and the target affected the perceptual distortion. These results imply that reference information is used in 2D shape perception during pursuit eye movement but it cannot completely explain the stable and accurate representation of 2D shape perception during pursuit eye movement.

  • As most the scanning systems developed until now provide radiation scan plane images of the inspected objects, there has been a limitation in judging exactly the shape of the objects inside a logistics container exactly with only 2-D radiation image information. As a radiation image is just the density information of the scanned object, the direct application of general stereo image processing techniques is inefficient. So we propose that a new volume-based 3-D reconstruction algorithm. Experimental results show the proposed new volume based reconstruction technique can provide more efficient visualization for X-ray inspection. For validation of the proposed shape reconstruction algorithm using volume, 15 samples were scanned and reconstructed to restore the shape using an X-ray stereo inspection system. Reconstruction results of the objects show a high degree of accuracy compared to the width (2.56%), height (6.15%) and depth (7.12%) of the measured value for a real object respectively. In addition, using a K-Mean clustering algorithm a detection efficiency of 97% is achieved. The results of the reconstructed shape information using the volume based shape reconstruction algorithm provide the depth information of the inspected object with stereo X-ray inspection. Depth information used as an identifier for an automated search is possible and additional studies will proceed to retrieve an X-ray inspection system that can greatly improve the efficiency of an inspection.

  • Shape recognition of solder ball bumps in a BGA (Ball Grid Array) is an important issue in flip chip bonding technology. In particular, the semiconductor industry has required faster and more accurate inspection of micron-size solder bumps in flip chip bonding as the density of balls has increased dramatically. The difficulty of this issue comes from specular reflection on the metal ball. Shape recognition of a metal ball is a very realproblem for computer vision systems. Specular reflection of the metal ball appears, disappears, or changes its image abruptly due to tiny movementson behalf of the viewer. This paper presents a practical shape recognition method for three dimensional (3-D) inspection of a BGA using a 5-step ring illumination device. When the ring light illuminates the balls, distinctive specularity images of the balls, which are referred to as "iso-slope contours" in this paper, are shown. By using a mathematical reflectance model, we can drive the 3-D shape information of the ball in aquantitative manner. The experimental results show the usefulness of the method for industrial application in terms of time and accuracy.

  • The new computer vision system which can reconstruct contours of parallel fault planes with horizon of 3-D curved objects has been developed. With the system, the shape of 3-D objects was measured by Simple Back-Projection algorithm which is a fundamental one in C.T.(Computed Tomography). And, the curvature in differential geometry characterizes any curve. Devising it, the method to represent each contour of 3-D curved objects with the system is described in this paper.
