  • The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to evaluate the application of a commercial CFD code to predict 3-D flow and power characteristics of wind turbines. The experimental approach, which has been main method of investigation, appears to be its limits, the cost increasing with the size of the wind turbines, hence mostly limited to observing the phenomena on rotor blades. Therefore. the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes solvers are considered a very serious contender. The flow solver CFX-TASCflow is employed in all computations in this paper. The 3-D flow separation and the wake distribution of 2 and 3 bladed Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) are compared to Heuristic model and smoke-visualized experimental result by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Simulated 3-D flow separation structure on the rotor blade is very similar to Heuristic model and the wake structure of the wind turbine is good consistent with smoke-visualized result. The calculated power of the 3 bladed rotor by CFD is compared with BEM results by TU-Delft. The CFD results of which is somewhat consist with BEM results. under an error less than 10%.

  • Labyrinth seals are commonly used in various kinds of turbomachinery to reduce leakage flow. In the present 3D CFD analysis of see-through-type labyrinth air seal, the methodology of determining leakage and rotordynamic coefficients is suggested with the relative coordinate system for steady-state simulation. The leakage flow and rotordynamic forces predicted by using different solvers and turbulent models of FLUENT are compared with the results of the existing bulk-flow analysis code LABYSEAL.FOR and experiment. The present CFD result of direct stiffness(K) shows only improvement in prediction. The results of leakage and rotordynamic coefficients as well as computing time are sensitive against the used solver and turbulent model.

  • CNG engine has been used as a transportation because of higher thermal efficiency and lower CO2 and particulate matter. However its out put power is decreased due to cylinder-to-cylinder variation during the supply of air-fuel mixture to the each cylinder. It also causes noise and vibration. So in this study, 1D engine simulation model was validated by comparison with experiment data and 3D CFD simulation was conducted to steady-state flow analysis about each manifold geometry. Then, the effects of various intake manifold geometries on variation were evaluated by using 1D-3D coupling analysis at engine speed of 2100 rpm range in 12 L CNG engine. As a result, variation was improved about 4 % though 3D CFD analysis and there was a variation within 3 % using 1D-3D coupling analysis.

  • Three-dimensional endwall flow within a linear cascade passage of high performance turbine blade is simulated with a 3-D Navier-Stokes CFD code (MOSA3D), which is based on body-fitted coordinate system, pressure-correction and finite volume method. The endwall flow characteristics, including the development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, etc. are clearly simulated, consistent with the generally known tendency. The effects of both turbulence model and convective differencing scheme on the prediction performance of endwall flow are systematically analyzed in the present paper. The convective scheme is found to have stronger effect than the turbulence model on the prediction performance of endwall flow. The present simulation result also indicates that the suction leg of the horseshoe vortex continues on the suction side until it reaches the trailing edge.

  • Busbar has been used as electric conductor within extra high voltage (EHV) gas insulated switchgear (GIS), which makes EHV GIS higher security, smaller size and lower cost. However, the main fault of GIS is overheating of busbar connection parts, circuit breaker and isolating switch contact parts, which has been already restricting development of GIS to a large extent. In this study, a coupled magneto-flow-thermal analysis is used to investigate the thermal properties of GIS busbar in steady-state. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model (FEM) is built to calculate multiphysics fields including electromagnetic field, flow field and thermal field in steady-state. The influences of current on the magnetic flux density, flow velocity and heat distribution has been investigated. Temperature differences of inner wall and outer wall are investigated for busbar tank and conducting rod. Considering the end effect in the busbar, temperature rise difference is compared between end sections and the middle section. In order to obtain better heat dissipation effect, diameters of conductor and tank are optimized based on temperature rise simulation results. Temperature rise tests have been done to validate the 3-D simulation model, which is observed a good correlation with the simulation results. This study provides technical support for optimized structure of the EHV GIS busbar.

  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to study the effects of steady slot suction on the aerodynamic forces of and flow around a wall-mounted finite-length square cylinder. The aspect ratio H/d of the tested cylinder is 5, where H and d are the cylinder height and width, respectively. The Reynolds number based on free-stream oncoming flow velocity U and d is 2.78×104. The suction slot locates near the leading edge of the free end, with a width of 0.025d and a length of 0.9d. The suction coefficient Q (= Us/U) is varied as Q = 0, 1 and 3, where Us is the velocity at the entrance of the suction slot. It is found that the free-end steady slot suction can effectively suppress the aerodynamic forces of the model. The maximum reduction of aerodynamic forces occurs at Q = 1, with the time-mean drag, fluctuating drag, and fluctuating lift reduced by 3.75%, 19.08%, 40.91%, respectively. For Q = 3, all aerodynamic forces are still smaller than those for Q = 0 (uncontrolled case), but obviously higher than those for Q = 1. The involved control mechanism is successfully revealed, based on the comparison of the flow around cylinder free end and the near wake for the three tested Q values.

  • To provide the operation rule curve for suppling instream flow to urban stream from reservoir, the Soho reservoir with watershed area of 7.4 $km^2$ and total water storage of 2.58 $Mm^3$ was planned at the headwaters of the Daejeoncheon. Daily streamflow was simulated and using the simulated streamflow and desired instream flow, the operation rule curve by Senga method was drawn and evaluated through reservoir operation. Senga method is derived by accumulating the differences between streamflow and desired instream flow adversely. Water storages were simulated on a daily basis to supply urban instream flow from Soho reservoir, but the amount of supplying instream flow to urban stream was not nearly increased comparing with that of normal operation that does not used the rule curve. Thereafter the new simulation-based operation rule curve was derived and applied to supply instream flow from Soho reservoir. In normal operation, the amount of instream flow was shown to 15,000 $m^3$/d, but it was increased to 27,700 $m^3$/d in withdrawal limited operation using the new derived rule curve, in which the applicability of this rule curve was proved. Also comparing with the flow duration curves at station just before urban Daejeoncheon stream without and with upstream Soho reservoir, the 95th flow was decreased from 1.64 mm/d to 1.51 mm/d, and the 355th flow was increased from 0.17 mm/d to 0.30 mm/d. Monthly streamflows during October to March were increased from 10.6~24.1 mm to 24.1~34.0 mm with the increasing rate of 141~227%.

  • This paper uses the numerical simulation to investigate the interference effect of 3-D turbulent flow around two high rise buildings in proximity at the different relative heights, gaps, and wind velocities. The computer program used to carry out the simulation is based on the control volume method and the SIMPLEST algorithm. The ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to simulate turbulence effects. Since the contracted flow between two adjacent buildings enhances the strength of vortex shedding from the object building, the pressure coefficient on each side wall of the object building is generally increased by the presence of apposed building. The effect is increased as the relative height or the gap between the two buildings decreases. The velocity on the vertical center line between two buildings is about 1.4 to 1.5 times the upstream wind velocity.
