  • In this study, both 2D and 3D failure shapes of rock mass above the water-filled cavity are put forward when the surrounding rock mass cannot bear the pressure caused by the water-filled cavity. Based on the analytical expressions derived by kinematic approach, the profiles of active and passive failure patterns are plotted. The sensitivity analysis is conducted to explore the influences of different rock parameters on the failure profiles. During the excavation of the deep tunnels above the karst cavity, the water table always changes because of progressive failure of cavity roof. Therefore, it is meaningful to discuss the effects of varying water level on the failure patterns of horizontal rock layers. The changing laws of the scope of the failure pattern obtained in this work show good consistency with the fact, which could be used to provide a guide in engineering.

  • The microstructure and electrical properties of the nonlinear ZnO varistor with A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$ additions is investigated. The variation of nonlinear behavior with A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$ additions is indicated from J-E and C-V measurement to be a result of the change of the interface defects density $N_{t}$ at the grain boundaries and the donor concentration $N_{d}$ in the ZnO grains. The optimum composition which has the nonlinear coefficients of -57 was observed in the sample with 0.005wt% A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$ additions. The conduction mechanism at the pre-breakdown region is consistent with a Schottky thermal emission process obeying a relation given by $J^{\var}$exp[-(.psi.-.betha. $E^{1}$2/)kT] and the conduction process at the breakdown region follows a Fowler-Nordheim tunneling mechanism of the form $J^{\var}$exp(-.gamma./E).

  • This paper presents an optical technique for the three-dimensional (3D) shape inspection of micro solder balls used in ball-grid array (BGA) packaging. The proposed technique uses an optical source composed of spatially arranged light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the results are derived based on the specular reflection characteristics of the micro solder balls for BGA A vision system comprising a camera and LEDs is designed to capture the reflected images of multiple solder balls arranged arbitrarily on a tray and the locations of the LED point-light-source reflections in each ball are determined via image processing, for shape inspection. The proposed methodology aims to determine the presence of defects in 3D BGA shape using the statistical information of the relative positions of multiple BGA balls, which are included in the image. The presence of the BGA balls with large deviations in relative position imply the inconsistencies in their shape. Experiments were conducted to verify that the proposed method could be applied to inspection without sophisticated mechanism and productivity problem.

  • The mechanism by which gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and dopamine (DA) control gonadotropin (GTH) release was studied in male and female rainbow trout using cultured pituitary cells obtained at different reproductive stages. The mechanisms of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) release by GnRH and DA could not be determined yet. However, basal and salmon-type GnRH (sGnRH)- or chicken-II-type GnRH (cGnRH-II)- induced luteinizing hormone (LH) release increased with gonadal maturation in both sexes. LH release activity was higher after sGnRH stimulation than cGnRH-II stimulation at maturing stages in both sexes. The GnRH antagonist ([Ac-3, 4-dehydro-$Pro^1$, D-p-F-$Phe^2$, D-$Trp^{3,6}$] GnRH) suppressed LH release by sGnRH stimulation in a dose-dependent manner, although the effect was weak in maturing fish. The role of DA as a GTH-release inhibitory factor differs during the reproductive cycle: the inhibition of sGnRH-stimulated LH release by DA was stronger in immature fish than in maturing, ovulating, or spermiated fish. DA did not completely inhibit sGnRH-stimulated LH release, and DA alone did not alter basal LH release. Relatively high doses ($10^{-6}$ or $10^{-5}M$) of domperidone (DOM, a DA D2 antagonist) increased LH release, which did not change with reproductive stage in either sex. The potency of DOM to enhance sGnRH-stimulated LH release was higher in maturing and ovulated fish than in immature fish. These data suggest that LH release from the pituitary gland is controlled by dual neuroendocrine mechanisms by GnRH and DA in rainbow trout, as has been reported in other teleosts. The mechanism of control of FSH release, however, remains unknown.

  • To improve the efficiency of a reverse engineering process, many researches have recently tried to develop efficient, automatic 3D scanning devices. A new automatic 3D scanning device using a spherical coordinate system mechanism is introduced in this study. This device incorporates a guide motion along the spherical coordinate to compound each 3D data point automatically. The experiments correlating the system assembling tolerance with the form accuracy were conducted to verify the efficiency of the system for the scanning of an object, including complex shapes and manifold sections. In addition, the required time and system accuracy, taken during the scanning process of complicated artifact models, were investigated. Further, based on these empirical results, it was ascertained that the superior productivity of this new device offers a more precise and efficient scan when compared to conventional methodologies.

  • Ketene-forming elimination from 2-X-4-nitrophenyl furylacetates (1a-d) promoted by $R_2NH-R_2NH_2{^+}$ in 70 mol % MeCN(aq) has been studied kinetically. When X = Cl and $NO_2$, the reactions exhibited second-order kinetics as well as Br$\ddot{o}$nsted ${\beta}$ = 0.37-0.54 and $|{\beta}_{lg}|$ = 0.31-0.45. The Br$\ddot{o}$nsted ${\beta}$ decreased with a poorer leaving group and $|{\beta}_{lg}|$ increased with a weaker base. The results are consistent with an E2 mechanism. When the leaving group was changed to a poorer one [X= H (1a) and $OCH_3$ (1b)], the reaction mechanism changed to the competing E2 and E1cb mechanisms. A further change to the E1cb mechanism was realized for the reaction of 1a with $i-Pr_2NH/i-Pr_2NH_2{^+}$ in 70 mol % MeCN-30 mol % $D_2O$. By comparing the kinetic results in this study with the existing data for $ArCH_2C(O)OC_6H_3-2-X-4-NO_2$, the effect of the ${\beta}$-aryl group on the ketene-forming elimination was assessed.

  • In this paper, the inclined endmilling process with a 3-axis machining center using inclined jigs is introduced for the purpose of reducing overall Dies/Molds machining time and improving the machining accuracies. In order to analyze the cutting mechanism of a given endmill more accurately, the unification of the cutting mechanism model of 3-different- kind endmills is carried out by using a nose radius as a parameter. By adding radial runouts as a parameter which influences on surface roughness, the superposition method which defines the effective cusp height superposing the cutter mark height and the conventional cusp height is advanced. And 3-D suface topography predicted in this paper looks like the surface normally observed in practice. Through machining experiments, the adequacy of the superposition method was confirmed.

  • The kinetics of ruthenium(III) chloride catalyzed oxidation of butanone and uncatalyzed oxidation of cyclohexanone by cerium(IV) in sulphuric acid medium have been studied. The kinetic rate law(I) in case of butanone conforms to the proposed mechanism. $$-\frac{1}{2}\frac{d[Ce^{IV}]}{dt}=\frac{kK[Ru^{III}][butanone]}{1+K[butanone]}$$ (1). However, oxidation of cyclohexanone in absence of catalyst accounts for the rate eqn. (2). $$-\frac{1}{2}\frac{[Ce^{IV}]}{dt}=\frac{(k_1+k_1K^'[H^+])[Ce^{IV}][Cyclohexanone]}{1+K_3[HSO_4^-]}$$ (2) Kinetics and activation parameters have been evaluated conventionally. Kinetically preferred mode of reaction is via ketonic and not the enolic forms.

  • Fully three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation calculations of the flow past 2D cavity are conducted to study the purging of neutrally buoyant or dense miscible contaminants introduced instantaneously inside the cavity. The length to depth ratio(L/D) is 2 and Reynolds number based on the depth is 3,360. Fully developed turbulent inflow are fed at the inlet from precursor simulation of channel flow. Mean flow pattern and unsteady features are investigated based on the experimental data of Pereira and Sousa. From the study of mass exchange processes, it is found that the mechanism of removal of the contaminant is very different between the non-buoyant and buoyant cases. In the buoyant case, internal wave motion which interacts with a strong cavity vortex is dominant in the ejection mechanism of the contaminants.

  • The nucleophilic substitution reactions of dipropyl chlorothiophosphate (3) with substituted anilines ($XC_6H_4NH_2$) and deuterated anilines ($XC_6H_4ND_2$) are investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at $55.0^{\circ}C$. The obtained deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs; $k_H/k_D$) are primary normal ($k_H/k_D$ = 1.11-1.35). A concerted mechanism involving predominant frontside nucleophilic attack is proposed on the basis of the primary normal DKIEs and selectivity parameters. Hydrogen bonded, four-center-type transition state is proposed. The steric effects of the two ligands on the anilinolysis rates of various substrates are discussed.
