In this study, the objective is determine the optimal design variable of engine mount system using the rubber mount of bush-type which is usually utilized in passive control to minimize vibrations of vehicle body or transmission from engine into body. The engine model adopted in this study is 4-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine support- ed by 4-points. The system is modelled in 10 d.o.f.-rigid body motion of the engine & transmission in 6 d.o.f., elastic motion of vehicle body in 4 d.o.f.(1st torsional, 1st vertical and 1st & 2nd lateral bending vibration mode). To consider the elastic motion of vehicle body, find the eigenvalues and mode shapes of vehicle body by nodal testing and then determine the modal masses and stiffnesses of the body. The design variables of the engine mount system are locations, stiffness and damping coefficients of the rubber mounts(28 design variables). In case of considering the torque-roll axis for the engine, the design variables of the mount system are reduced to 22 design variables. The objective functions in optimal design process are considered by three cases, that is, 1) transmitted forces through engine mounts, 2) acceleration components of generalized coordinates for the vibration of vehicle body, 3) acceleration of specified location(where gear box) of body. three case are analyzed and compared with each other.
The basic effects of hydrogen addition for engine performance and emission were investigated in single cylinder research engine. Seven commercial injectors were tested to choose a suitable injector for hydrogen injection prior to its engine implementation. The hydrogen fuel leakage and flow rate were evaluated for each injector and KN3-1(Keihin, CO.) showed the best performance for hydrogen fuel. At the higher excess air ratio(${\lambda}=1.7$, 2.0), the better combustion stability was found with hydrogen addition even though its effect was small at lower excess air ratio (${\lambda}=1.0$, 1.3). Stable operation of the engine was even guaranteed at ${\lambda}=2.0$, if the amount of hydrogen gas was near 15% of total energy. In the lean region, ${\lambda}>1.3$, thermal efficiency was improved slightly while it was not clearly observed at ${\lambda}=1.0$, 1.3. It is considered that, in some cases, high temperature environment due to hydrogen combustion caused further heat loss to surroundings. Except for ${\lambda}=1.0$, with larger amount of hydrogen addition, CO was reduced drastically but it was emitted more at the leaner region. Nitric oxides(NOx) was increased a little more with hydrogen addition at ${\lambda}=1.0$, 1.3. However, at ${\lambda}>1.3$ its relative amount of emission was low. In addition, the amount of NOx was continuously decreased with hydrogen addition, but, at ${\lambda}=2.0$ the amount of NOx was lowered to 1/100 of that of ${\lambda}=1.0$. THC emission was significantly increased as air/fuel ratio was raised to leaner region due to misfire and partial burn.
This paper proposes a method to detect the misfired cylinder using a new misfire detection index. The new method of misfired cylinder is a comparison of pressure gradient during the blowdown period of exhaust stroke. If a misfire occurs, the engine will he lost some power and consumes the more fuel and the torque will be unsteady. Most of all, the misfire affects a bad influence of the 3-way catalyst and emits unburned hydrocarbon in the air. To prevent these unusual phenomena and eliminate the factor of the environmental pollution, it is important to detect the misfired cylinder. To do the experiment, set up the assist device on the manifold. This assist device is not deformed for conventional exhaust manifold and installed in the end of the exhaust manifold. Experimental results showed that the method using the mean gradient pressure index is proven to be effective in the detection of misfired cylinder on gasoline engine regardless loads and revolutions of the engine.
The spark timing is one of major parameters to the engine performance and emissions. The ECU controls the spark timing based on preset values, which are functions of load and speed, in most of today's automotive SI engine. In this system, the preset spark timing can be different from optimum value due to the deviations from mass production, aging effects and so on. In the present study, a control logic is investigated for real time adaptation of spark timing to optimal value. It has been found that crank angle of miximum cylinder pressure is one of the appropriate parameters to estimate the optimum spark timing throught experiment. It has also been observed for spark timing convergence by variation of engineering model factors. The simulation program including engineering model for cycle by cycle variation of combustion is developed for surveying spark timing control logic. It is also shown that simulation results reflect experiment outputs and reasonableness of spark timing control logic for crank angle of maximum cylinder pressure.
NOx reduction experiments were conducted by direct injection of urea into a diesel fueled, combustion-driven flow reactor which simulated a single engine cylinder ($966cm^3$). NOx reduction tests were carried out over a wide range of air/fuel ratios (A/F=20-40) using an initial NOx level of 530ppm, and for normalized stoichiometric ratios of reductant to NOx (NSR) of 1.5 to 4.0. The results show that effective NOx reduction with urea occurred over an injection temperature range of 1100 to 1350K. NOx reduction increased with increasing NSR values, and about a 40%-60% reduction of NOx was achieved with NSR=1.5-4.0. Most of the NOx reduction occurred within the cylinder and head section (residence time <40msec), since temperatures in the exhaust pipe were too low for additional NOx reduction. Relatively low NOx reduction is believed to be due to the existence of higher levels of CO and unburned hydrocarbons (UHC)inside the cylinder, and large temperature drops along the reactor. Injection of secondary combustible additives (diesel fuel/$C_2H_6$) into the exhaust pipe promoted further substantial NOx reduction (5%-30%) without shifting the temperature windows. Diesel fuel was found to enhance NOx reduction more than $C_2H_6$, and finally practical implications are further discussed.
The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wears of piston and piston rings were investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder, four cycle, indirect injection diesel engine operating at an engine load of 75% and an engine speed of 1600 rpm. For the purpose of comparison between the wear rates of two cylinders with and without EGR, the recirculated exhaust gas was sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot contenets in exhaust emissions were removed by an intentionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diameter), while only the fresh air was inhaled into the other cylinder. These experiments were carried out on the fuel injection timing fixed at 15.3$^{\circ}$ BTDC. It was found that the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR increased a little bit, but the piston head diameter increased, rather than decreased, owing to soot adhesion and erosion wear, and especially larger with EGR, and that the wear rates of the top and second piston ring(compression ring)thickness with EGR were more than twice the wear rate of top ring in case of no EGR, but the wear rate of oil rings thickness without EGR increased greater than that with EGR.
In SI engine research the pressure data in cylinder is the most important fundamental ones leading to engine efficiencies and performances. It is, therefore, necessary to obtain accurate pressure data and yet it is often impossible to install a reliable data producing, flush-mounted type pressure transducer in a cylinder of small and medium size multicylinder SI engines. When flush mounting the transducer is not possible, the spark-plug type pressure transducer is commonly used as an alternative. In this case, the transmission tube of spark-plug type pressure transducer introduces distortions in the pressure signal. Efforts were made to understand the dynamic characteristics of spark-plug pressure transducer by shock tube tests and real engine experiments. In engine experiment the cylinder pressure data were simultaneously obtained by both flush mounted and spark-plug type pressure transducers of certain transmission tube geometry. Those pressure data collected by spark-plug type pressure transducer were tested for correction to flush mounted ones by the application of transfer function. As a result of the calibration the IMEP difference between F/M data and improved S/P data was shown to be corrected about 75-98% from the original ones.
In this paper, the effects of scale formation in engine water jacket upon the thermal durability of engine itself and its component parts were studied. To understand the effect of quality of water, a full load engine endurance test for 50 hours was carried out with not-treated underground water. The followings were found through the tested engine inspection after the endurance test; 1-2 mm thick scale formation in the engine water jacket, valve seat wear, piston top land scuffing, piston pin stick, and cylinder bore scuffing in siamese area. In order to understand the causes of above test results, the heat rejection rate to coolant, the metal surface temperature of combustion chamber, and the oil and exhaust gas temperatures were measured and analyzed. The scale formed in the engine water jacket played a role as thermal insulator. The scale formed in the engine reduced the heat rejection rate to coolant and it caused to increase the metal surface temperature. The reduced heat rejection rate to coolant increased the heat rejection rate to oil and exhaust gas and increased the oil and exhaust gas temperature. Also, the reasons of valve seat wear, piston top land scuffing and cylinder bore scuffing, and piston pin stick quantitatively analyzed in this paper.
In this research, the diesel cycle was thermodynamically interpreted to evaluate the possibility of high efficiency by converting diesel engine to the atkinson cycle, and general cycle features were analyzed after comparing these two cycles. That an experimental single cylinder and a long stroke diesel-atkinson engine, of which S/B ratio was more than 3, were manufactured. After evaluating the engine through basic experiments, a diesel engine was converted into the atkinson cycle by constituent VCR (variable compression ratio) device and VVT (variable valve timing) system. The experimental method was to observe compression work reduction effects due to low compression effects from delayed intake valve closing of the early stage atkinson engine. The result, the possibility of increasing compression ratio about each engine load was confirmation by constructing compensate expansion-compression ratio in accordance with the delayed intake valve close.
Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow. Recently, there are lots of studies on steady flow with different SCV geometries. In this study the flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady test rig for different SCV open ratios. Each swirl ratio of several SCV angle was quantified by swirl impulse meter and 2D-LDV measurement. The results showed that the swirl ratio was controlled between 2.3 and 3.8 based on SCV angles. The velocity distributions of in-cylinder flow field were measured by 2-D LDV test and visualized swirl and tumble flow pattern at different positions. In this engine , we found out that the swirl was dominant flow.
