  • This work focused on aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) with different foam core densities and different face-sheet thicknesses subjected to constant amplitude three-point bending cyclic loading to study its fatigue performance. The experiments were conducted out by a high frequency fatigue test machine named GPS-100. The experimental results showed that the fatigue life of AFS decreased with the increasing loading level and the structure was sensitive to cyclic loading, especially when the loading level was under 20%. S-N curves of nine groups of AFS specimens were obtained and the fatigue life of AFS followed three-parameter lognormal distribution well. AFS under low cyclic loading showed pronounced cyclic hardening and the static strength after fatigue test increased. For the same loading level, effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the fatigue life of AFS structure were trade-off and for the same loading value, the fatigue life of AFS increased with aluminum foam core density or face-sheet thickness monotonously. Core shear was the main failure mode in the present study.

  • Reaction bonded silicon carbide(RBSC) composite for heat-exchanger was fabricated by molten Si infiltration method. The raw materials with variable particle sizes were used in this experience. The finer the particle size in sintered silicon carbide was the more increasing 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness. As the adaptable particle sizes had been occupied interstice arising from packing sample, the mechanical properties were increased. In the PCS1-1 sample, the 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness were 323MPa and $4.9\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • Four point bending tests of the brazed joint composed of sintered silicon nitride and 0.2% carbon steel with Cusil ABA filler which were fabricated at 86$0^{\circ}C$ were performed at temperatures, 25, 100, 200, 300, 400, 50$0^{\circ}C$ From the experiments, the maximum bending strength was measured at 30$0^{\circ}C$ From the 3D FE analysis of the residual stress of the brazed joint, it was revealed that the thermally induced residual stresses were minimized when the environmental temperature was 35$0^{\circ}C$ Considering the degradation of the filler material at high temperatures, it was calculated that the maximum bending strength of the brazed joint occured just below the temperature of the minimum thermal residual stress and the thermal residual stress was the dominative parameter of the brazed joint.

  • This study was carried out to develope a new process of flattening bamboo pieces(3 months old) by two steps of utilizing microwave oven and hot press. Internode bamboo pieces were impregnated with low molecular weight phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) under vacuum of 76 cmHg, heated in a household microwave oven in 1 minute, pressed on the temperature of $145^{\circ}C$ by the hot press for 10 minute, and then cooled by the cold press in their flattened form. The physical and mechanical . Properties of compressed flattened bamboo were as follows: 1) PF1(Mw:427) and PF2(Mw:246) sol. met the success of flattening of internode bamboo pieces in both of P. bambusoides and P. nigra var. PF2 showed the more plasticity to flatten the bamboo than PFI. The PF2 sol. with low molecular weight(Mw:246) gave the more weight gain than that of PF1 in the equal concentration. PF1 of 5% (NVC) and PF2 of 10% (NVC) sol. gave the best result for physical and mechanical properties and from a economical view point. 2) The PFI of 5% (NVC) sol. with low molecular weight decreased the water absorption of 62-63% and increased the bending strength (MaR) of 80-90%, compression strength of 43-54%. 3) The PF2 of 10% (NVC) sol. with low molecular weight decreased the water absorption of 56-57% and increased the bending strength (MaR) of 64-86%, compression strength of 39-63%.

  • PURPOSE. Fabrication of zirconia restorations with ideal mechanical properties in a short period is a great challenge for clinicians. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of heating rate on the mechanical and microstructural properties of monolithic zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty monolithic zirconia specimens were prepared from presintered monolithic zirconia blanks. All specimens were then assigned to 4 groups according to heating rate as Control, Group $15^{\circ}C$, Group $20^{\circ}C$, and Group $40^{\circ}C$. All groups were sintered according to heating rates with the sintering temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$, a holding time of 90 minutes and natural cooling. The phase composition was examined by XRD analysis, three-point bending test was conducted to examine the flexural strength, and Weibull analysis was conducted to determine weibull modulus and characteristic strength. Average grain sizes were determined by SEM analysis. One-way ANOVA test was performed at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. Only tetragonal phase characteristic peaks were determined on the surface of analyzed specimens. Differences among the average grain sizes of the groups were not statistically significant. The results of the three-point bending test revealed no significant differences among the flexural strength of the groups (P>.05). Weibull modulus of groups was ranging from 3.50 to 4.74. The highest and the lowest characteristic strength values were obtained in Group $20^{\circ}C$ and Control Group, respectively. CONCLUSION. Heating rate has no significant effect on the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Monolithic zirconia restorations can be produced in shorter sintering periods without affecting the flexural strength by modifying the heating rate.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of the present study was to record the metal-ceramic bond strength of a feldspathic dental porcelain and a Co-Cr alloy, using the Direct Metal Laser Sintering technique (DMLS) for the fabrication of metal substrates. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten metal substrates were fabricated with powder of a dental Co-Cr alloy using DMLS technique (test group) in dimensions according to ISO 9693. Another ten substrates were fabricated with a casing dental Co-Cr alloy using classic casting technique (control group) for comparison. Another three substrates were fabricated using each technique to record the Modulus of Elasticity (E) of the used alloys. All substrates were examined to record external and internal porosity. Feldspathic porcelain was applied on the substrates. Specimens were tested using the three-point bending test. The failure mode was determined using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The statistical analysis was performed using t-test. RESULTS. Substrates prepared using DMLS technique did not show internal porosity as compared to those produced using the casting technique. The E of control and test group was $222{\pm}5.13GPa$ and $227{\pm}3GPa$, respectively. The bond strength was $51.87{\pm}7.50MPa$ for test group and $54.60{\pm}6.20MPa$ for control group. No statistically significant differences between the two groups were recorded. The mode of failure was mainly cohesive for all specimens. CONCLUSION. Specimens produced by the DMLS technique cover the lowest acceptable metal-ceramic bond strength of 25 MPa specified in ISO 9693 and present satisfactory bond strength for clinical use.

  • Transplanted cortical bone grafts of freeze-dried bones also function as sustaining for defected bones, however, it has less strength and is fragile without rehydration. In this study, strength and stiffness of freeze-dried bone from bovine cortical bones were evaluated by three point bending test according to different time frames such as rehydration times of 0.5, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hrs in electrolyte solution and was compared with those of frozen bones. The strength and stiffness of frozen bone were $264.4\pm36.7$ MPa, $17.0\pm1.5$ GPa, respectively. The strength and stiffness of freeze-dried bone which fat was removed by treatments of chloroform-methanol solutions for 6 days, then was freeze-dried at $-80^{\circ}C$ and sterilized with ethylene oxide gas, were $224.9\pm27.6$ MPa, $19.2\pm2.8$ GPa, respectively. The strength and stiffness of feeze-dried bone were decreased 15.0% and increased 13.2% than these of frozen bone, respectively. The strength and stiffness of freeze-dried bone rehydrated for 6 hrs were restored to 96.0% strength and 99.2% stiffness of frozen bone. The rehydration time of freeze-dried bone which had the highest strength and stiffness was six hours and three hours, respectively. The results of the mathematica program for the variation of the strength and stiffness showed 3 hours and 30 minutes of rehydration time in electrolyte solution for the best condition in the strength and stiffness which was adequate to treat freeze-dried cortical bone.

  • The tests of three point bending and vickers hardness have been carried out to investigate mechanical characteristics of bioceramics for artificial dental crowns. And color and color difference test has been performed to study chromaticity changes after sintering specimens composited with glass and leucite powders. In addition, thermal dilation test has been carried out to examine bonding relations between dental porcelain and metal frame (Ni-Cr alloy). The result of three point bending test showed a maximum strength of about 68 MPa. Thermal expansion coefficient changed from 8.3$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ to 13.5$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ with increasing leucite content (0~30wt.%) in glass matrix. Bonding between porcelain (25% leucite-75% glass) and Ni-Cr alloy was excellent.
