  • Hard disk drives (HDD) in computer are used extensively as data storage capacity. The trend in the computer industry to produce smaller disk drives rotating at higher speeds requires an improved understanding of fluid motion in the space between disks. Laser sheet and digital camera was used for 2-dimensional visualization of the unsteady flow between the center pair of two co-rotating disks in air with a cylindrical enclosure (or shroud). Geometric parameters are gap height (H) between disks, and gap distance (G) between disk tip and shroud. The lobe-structured boundary between inner region and outer region was detected by inserted particles, and the number of dominant vortices was determined clearly It is found from flow visualization that the number of vortex cells can be correlated with Reynolds number based on H which is defined as $Re_H={\Omega}RH/v$ ranging from $3.18\times10^3\;to\;1.43\times10^4$, and decreases as the disk speed increases. The lobe pattern by vortex cells is changed to a circular pattern for the wide gap than narrow one.

  • This study investigated the natural convection and radiation in a rectangular enclosure with ceiling vent experimentally and numerically. A heat source is located on the center of the bottom surface. The analysis was peformed a pure convection and is combination of natural convection and radiation. The shape of the considered two dimensional model is a square whose center of ceiling($30\%$) is opened. The numerical simulations are carried out for the pure natural convection case and the combined heat transfer case by using the SIMPLE algorithm. For the turbulent flow, Reynolds stresses are closed by the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model and the wall function is used to determine the wall boundary conditions. The experiment was performed on the same geometrical shape as the computations. The radiative heat transfer is analized by the S-N discrete ordinates method. The results of pure natural convection are compared with those of combined heat transfer by the velocity vectors, stream lines, isothermal lines. The results obtained are as follows 1. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation through the shape of stream lines, isothermal lines are similar to each other. 2. The temperature fields obtained by numerical method are compared to those obtained by experimental one, and it is found that they are showed mean relative error $8.5\%$. 3. Visualization bt smoke is similar to computational results.

  • Automation of welding process in shipyards is ultimately necessary, since the welding site is spatially enclosed by floors and girders, and therefore welding operators are exposed to hostile working conditions. To solve this problem, a welding mobile robot that can navigate autonomously within the enclosure has been developed. To achieve the welding task in the closed space, the robotic welding system needs a sensor system for the working environment recognition and the weld seam tracking, and a specially designed environment recognition strategy. In this paper, a three-dimensional laser vision system is developed based on the optical triangulation technology in order to provide robots with 3D work environmental map. Using this sensor system, a spatial filter based on neural network technology is designed for extracting the center of laser stripe, and evaluated in various situations. An environment modeling algorithm structure is proposed and tested, which is composed of the laser scanning module for 3D voxel modeling and the plane reconstruction module for mobile robot localization. Finally, an environmental recognition strategy for welding mobile robot is developed in order to recognize the work environments efficiently. The design of the sensor system, the algorithm for sensing the partially structured environment with plane segments, and the recognition strategy and tactics for sensing the work environment are described and discussed with a series of experiments in detail.

  • A compact Q-band waveguide-to-microstrip transition for UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) radiometer applications is presented. The key features of this transition are simplicity, compactness, easy matching, and lower sensitivity to the dimensions and fabrication tolerances. The simple E-plane patch-type design is insensitive to the backshort cavity enclosure and misalignment between the waveguide and microstrip substrate. The primary parameters are optimized using a three-dimensional(3D) electromagnetic simulator(ANSYS HFSS). It exhibited better than 20-dB return loss at mid-band frequencies with less than 1-dB insertion loss for the back-to-back transition, and a return loss better than 15 dB over the frequency range of 36 GHz to 42 GHz.

  • The average Nusselt numbers in the source and crystal region for the variation of thermal Grashof number (Grt) in the range of 2.31 × 104 ≤ Grt ≤ 4.68 × 104 are obtained through numerical simulations. It is shown the average Nusselt number in the crystal region is more than twice as large as the average Nusselt number in the source region. The average Nusselt number in the source region shows an increasing tendency with increasing the thermal Grashof number, Grt, while the average Nusselt number in the crystal region shows a decreasing tendency with increasing thermal Grashof number, Grt. For the variation of the solutal Grashof number (Grs) in the ran ge of 3.28 × 105 ≤ Grs ≤ 4.43 × 105, the average Sherwood number in the source region and crystal region tends to decrease as the solutal Grashof number, Grs increases. The average Sherwood number in the crystal region is about four times greater than the average Sherwood number in the source region.
